Excellent piece! I have been blessed to volunteer in schools for a couple decades! As a district PTA president with support of our school district and state PTA, we just offered training on the Common Core Standards here in Kentucky which was the first state to adopt them. Trainings were done throughout our state. More important than what the scores on tests were, is how the information will be used to improve the pedagogy and student growth. I am also glad to see the NAACP is getting more involved in education and are training volunteers but we have so much more work to do as parents! I was also a Chairperson for our NAACP branch's Education Committee and served on our state convention's panel on Closing the Achievement Gap. Some gaps start even before our children start school! As we implement the Common Core Standards, we must also weigh how best to consider gaps as some teachers set expectations and achievement goals for students. We need Parents, Families and Communities engaged with children's education.

Secretary Arne Duncan along with others, expressed much concern over the dropout rates! I attended America's Promise Alliance Grad Nation Summit and we met with legislators on the alarming concern that a student is dropping out every 26 seconds! According to Education Week, a child not at level is four times less likely to graduate by age 19 and if the child is in poverty, is 13 times less likely! These students’ odds increase dramatically that they will likely drop out of high school, experience drugs, poverty, more health problems, single parenthood and the penal system! According to PRNewswire, males of any race are 47 times more likely to be incarcerated than their college graduating counterparts of the same age range! For more, read my blog, http://debateandswitch.wordpress.com/2012/12/20/school-to-prison-pipeline/.”
