GOP Candidate Posts Pic of Gun With Caption: “Welcome to Tennessee Mr. Obama”
Republicans seem to enjoy threatening Democrats in general, and President Obama in particular, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that GOP House candidate Brad Staats posted a picture of his handgun on Facebook along with a caption welcoming President Barack Obama to Tennessee.
Staats, who is running against Democratic incumbent Rep. Jim Cooper, made the post on September 27th on his Facebook campaign page.
“Many people in Tennessee keep asking me about my opinion on Second Amendment rights. Apparently Tennesseans are part of that crazy crowd that Obama says ‘cling to their religion and guns.’ Well, then I must be part of that crazy crowd,” he wrote in a caption beneath a photo of his gun. “Here is something that I usually have with me. Welcome to Tennessee Mr. Obama, where we appreciate our 2nd Amendment rights and the Constitution that was wisely given to us by our founding fathers.”
It wasn’t cute, or funny, especially considering the increase in the number of hate groups in America.
The South Poverty Law Center reports:
The radical right grew explosively in 2011, the third such dramatic expansion in as many years. The growth was fueled by superheated fears generated by economic dislocation, a proliferation of demonizing conspiracy theories, the changing racial makeup of America, and the prospect of four more years under a black president who many on the far right view as an enemy to their country.
When asked by The Tennessean whether he was threatening President Obama with his post, Staats said “Absolutely not. I’m not one of those that would ever threaten the president. He’s probably got enough of his own stuff to worry about without me.”
He later added, ”I do want President Obama to know, as well as the rest of Congress and everyone else regarding our constitutional rights, don’t tread on America’s Constitution,” said Staats. “I think that your liberties, your life can be defended by the proper instructed use of a handgun.”
