Why Did Spanish Magazine Publish Photoshopped Image of Michelle Obama as Half Naked Slave?
A magazine in Spain, Magazine Fuera de Serie, has published a photoshopped image of a partially nude First Lady Michelle Obama
. The image shows FLOTUS sitting in a chair, covered with what appears to be an American flag, with one of her b*****s exposed. It looks as if the first black First Lady has been remade into a slave wearing a head wrap, thanks to technology.
The question which immediately comes to mind is, did anyone ever publish a nude magazine cover of Laura Bush? What about Barbara? Hillary? Of course not, but it seems that, even as First Lady, white people across the globe feel that they can use Michelle Obama’s image for whatever purpose they desire. If they desire to see her naked, then so be it, regardless of whether or not she’s married, or who she’s married to. Married to the leader of the most powerful country in the world? No matter. Show me your titty. And so it goes. In a white supremacist structure, it doesn’t matter how much a black person achieves, he or she is still just an object to be whimsically used and discarded.
In this instance, Michelle Obama’s face was superimposed on the body of an African Guadeloupean female slave painted by French artist Marie-Guilhelmine Benoist in 1800. To you, FLOTUS is a brilliant attorney and an excellent First Lady, but to the folks at Magazine Fuera de Serie, she’s still just a slave. Best not let her, or us, forget that.
To the artist’s credit, she has done other famous nudes, some of them white. But the idea that Michelle Obama’s face would be superimposed on a slave’s body has special meaning, and anyone with half a brain would know that. I’m sure the artist, Karine Percheron-Daniels, knows that this representation of Obama shows her as submissive and powerless. And that wasn’t by accident. That was the plan.

It’s disrespectful. Never before has a first lady been shown this way. They have beautiful art in Spain. They could have used another image if they were paying homage. Why did they even do a portrait of Michelle Obama. But, they are so strong. We just have to let people expose themselves for who they are.

The original portrait that this is representing is of a slave so this is no mistake. Also ask yourself this…How would you feel if it was your mother, wife or daughter displayed in the manner, with or without your permission??? It’s distasteful and demeaning!

This representation fails to do what it once accomplshed. In 1800 the artist Marie-Guillemine completed this painting and during that time it was viewed by many as symbol of black and female rights. This picture fails to capture the power, presence and accomplishments of the first lady or what she represents. It divides and does not edify by failing to aknowledge that regardless of race, color or religion she represents America not just blacks or female issues.

@Derrick. You are right, but you must remember that this is a magazine in ‘Spain’. You say boycott? I remember when they wouldn’t even sell us things, or allow us into their favored places of business! Their answer for boycott is to reduce our ability to find jobs, etc.
There is very little cohesiveness/unity in our “black” community! This is not by happenstance! Very little concerning our ultra-negative predicament is! This is talking about availability of the spiritual covenant, the Holy Spirit, to both Jews and Greeks; not the elimination of any physical differences or differences regarding nationality between Jews and Greeks. Now god is saying the exclusivity of his spiritual covenant with Israel is no longer exclusive to Israel but now applies to Greeks. However these Greeks too, must comply with Gods covenant and can not continue to worship their pagan gods. If Greeks wish to receive the spiritual promise of God they must obey gods laws and commandments like the Israelites were obligated to obey. The reason God cancelled the exclusivity of his contract with Israel was to make Israel, his chosen people jealous.
Israel has not been forgotten by God because he now allows Greeks to take part in the spiritual inheritance once exclusively given to Israel. The biological descendants of Abraham are still Gods chosen people. Greeks that are now allowed to take part in the Spiritual covenant of God are not magically transformed into “the chosen people of God”. They are still Greeks whom God has recognized, if, and only if, they accept Jesus Christ as the son of God and receive the infilling of the Holy Spirit.
In the eyes of God Greeks is no different from Israelites regarding receipt of the Holy Spirit. However this acceptance should not be confused with God not distinguishing between Greeks and Israelites. Greeks have been graphed into the original tree of Israel. Greeks are not the original tree they were graphed into. This is what Constantine has lied about. You see Greeks today are identified as white people. Israel today is also identified as white people, Greeks. However, God and the bible identify Israel as the black descendants of Abraham and Israel/Jacob. Although god now allows both Israel and Greeks to receive the Holy Spirit, god continues to recognize and distinguish the Greeks from his chosen people, Israel. Why don’t we begin with a petition if you will, to boycott Christmas and any other spending of the African American Dollars until respect is received by merchants that hate our “skin color”. We need to stop caring what people who are jealous of us think about us. Regardless of the intended insult, the FLOTUS is a beautiful woman and the naysayers and playah haters are jealous of her. Arguably Mrs. Obama is the most beautiful first lady this country has ever had. The only close candidate is probably Mrs. Kennedy. When you get the type of attention that tries to discount the style, sophistication, intelligence and beauty of the subject, it is due to jealous obsession, not a genuine belief in the projected attempt to discredit.
From an artistic vantage point, this is a very beautiful portrayal, albeit highly disrespectful, and we should look at the beauty of the imagery. Fact of the matter is, this is the replica of one of the most famous portraits in history. The original Senegalese woman painted in the original portrait was strikingly beautiful as is the first lady. The portrait has hung in the finest museums around the world for many a years. It is named “Les Negress.”
As a matter of fact, I commissioned a talented artist who makes a living reproducing oil replicas of classic portraits to render me a copy of this painting, not once, but twice; and each time it was stolen by jealous theives. I hung in my bedroom, and took such joy in knowing that no matter how those who are envious of us try to demean us, that our beauty – both spiritually and physically – shines through so magnificently.
Too bad that we are unaware of our beauty and our value. The original painting of this portrait, “Les Negress,” I would venture to say, has a appraisal value well over three million dollars.
So, even in disrespectful posture, the beauty of our First Lady, both spiritually and physically, is undeniable; and we should stop getting mad and start focusing on getting even by out witting those who continue to disrespect and exercise malice towards us just because of the color or our skin, the kinks in our hair, etc. and start loving ourselves enough to not give a darn about the small stuff and instead focus on the stuff that will really set us free — knowledge of self and self love.

Certainly it was a very wrong choice of picture, considering Afro-American precedents in the US, as a heading for an article which asseverate that Michele will be the key if Obama gets reelected. The article begins with these words: “Never the old saying that behind a great man there is a formidable woman has been more accurate”. And continues describing how political communication experts asseverate that her popularity is growing exponentially and will probably be an important factor for Obama’s reelection, if not THE FACTOR, they also describe how she has gained everyone’s admiration!!.
The title of the article says: “Michelle eats Obama” which in figured speech means hat she is over growing her husband in popularity. But I must agree with you that it was a very wrong choice of picture which I can only attribute to a lack of sensibility about past and present race relations in the US. They are not so conscious about that here. and probably the picture is just an exaggeration of the title taken the wrong path. All in all, the article could not be more positive about Michele, and says that the author will describe in the article the secrets of the woman that has conquered not only Obama’s love but the nation’s love!
I can see how both articles: the original spanish and the criticising “KultureKritic” have failed at considering one another’s cultural differences, but what bothers me most is that they didn’t even take the time to translate to English the original wording of the article, thus misinterpreting the real intentions of the article.

This sickens me. No matter how far we have grown, physically, emotionally, intelluctually, professionally, become great people based on the world’s eye, we are still a slave. Chills went through my body. I grew up during the 50-60s. I know the hate that was so ignorantly directed towards black americans. I just pray hard that black people all over America realize what white people will forever think of them, no matter what height they reach in this society. Stop giving praise and joy to the white world, look at how they look at the FIRST LADY of the United States. I don’t think it’s a full-fledged article. The 150 or so words I found on the magazine’s website simply said that she’s more popular than her husband. And that she’s the great-granddaughter of slaves and now the powerful first lady. The piece can’t be longer than 200 words. I *think* it said something about her beauty. It said she’ll help President Obama win re-election. NOTHING at all will keep most Europeans from seeing us first and foremost as the descendants of slaves. The term “great-(grandson)(granddaughter) of slaves” has been applied in the press to other accomplished or powerful African Americans. They see it as a fact, and that’s it. Many Europeans were glad President Obama was elected — and some are just die-hard, violent racists.

Actually, before misreading and allowing your “selves” to be instantly programmed, do a little research on what is being shown here. Also since when did an “exposed” breast become nudity? Mrs Obama is not royalty, nor is the socalled “queen” of England. These are women who are wealthy and they are no doubt NOT thinking of any of us. So why the big hype over an illustration that by the way is similar to renditions of the “lady liberty”. Often in history, especially European history a topless female with both or one breast exposed is used as a symbol of freedom, motherhood, and nationhood. Are Spaniards racists? Of course they, and so are most non-whites and many non-whites (i.e. Indians, east Indians, hispanics, asians, etc.)? So what else is new? Get outraged over real issues, and then do something about those issues…as opposed to exclaiming vicimization about a the photo of one of the world’s elites….
These Spaniards have chosen to forget their history. It was black people who brought civilization to Spain via the Moors. The Spaniards were basically barbarians until the bringing of culture, education (the first university, Salamanca, in Europe), and baths to that part of the world. I would never ever go to Spain! I have spoken to many diverse students and adult travelers to Spain and I was told their treatment was awful over there. I remember some years ago I almost got hit by a car who I later found was from Spain. It was his fault and I was very angry and I let him know. He made the mistake of call me a n—er and all h**l broke lose. I told him off and then a male friend of mine happen to walk by wanting to know why I was so upset! I told him what happen…and needless to sayMr Spain got his a– out of there because my friend was ready to teach him a lesson.
What really did it for me was watching a episode of America Next Top Model. They were doing a shoot in Spain with Male Spanish models. One of them told Tyra Banks that he did not pose with Blacks!…So I will never spend my hard earned money to go to Spain.

I am disgusted and disappointed by this. I am a black American woman and I studied in Spain and have been back to visit several times. Although I never encountered blatant, racism or white-surpremacy, I will say that the Spanish are definitely not culturally sensitive nor do they censor depictions that might be offenive. They still sell black lawn jockeys there (like garden gnomes), and have “sambos” and other derrogatory depictions in their comic strips. I realize that this magazine cover is just trying to be provocative (like the New Yorker that depicted Michelle Obama as a militant black-panther) but this does cross the line in my mind. What I’m even more disgusted by is the heading next to the picture. It says, “Michelle se come a Obama” which is basically referring to her giving the president oral s*x.
For what it’s worth, a friend who has also lived in Spain tells me that she once saw a cartoon depiction of the Prince of Spain giving it to the princess from behind. It was in reaction to the government saying that they would pay families for procreating…in an effort to repopulate the country. So on some level I get that the Spanish media can be disrespectful all around. But this nude depiction of our first lady as a slave (or a Mammie) and a reference to her and the president’s s*x life does seem to be the worst example of disrespect that I’ve seen.
“Se come” is not the same as “come” — it says she’s more popular than Pres. Obama, no reference to oral s*x (or any s*x) is in the article.

I also know about a dozen or so blacks who have traveled there and have had good experiences. It’s like you can’t throw up your hands at an entire country just for a few idiots. This magazine cover is idiotic but I know the history of Spain and how repressed they were during Franco’s dictatorship. Ever since the 70′s and 80′s they are all about freedom of expression. Even if it means offending others. I don’t agree with it but it is what it is. In all honesty most Spanish are very progressive in their thinking. Although they don’t know our history/struggle as blacks in America as much as they should, but who does? Our own white Americans don’t get it and want to call us racist for mentioning it! Naomi Campbell was huge there and they all fantasized about Whitney Houston after the BodyGuard came out and it had record sells there whereas here it didn’t do so hot. Again, I think that male model was just one example of the foolishness…and it’s not like that doesn’t happen here too. Not trying to make excuses for them…I’m just saying that it’s easy as black Americans to look at other countries and go, “oh, they’re racists over there!” But how does the U.S. look to the outside? I know that my Spanish friends were horrified over Katrina and couldn’t believe how slow our government was to respond! They also know about Treyvon Martin and all of the ugly stuff we’ve got going on here.
So about the magazine cover I say this: something like that would NEVER go down here because we’d have the ACLU, NAACP and every other group jump all over that! But…does that change the racist ideologies that still exist in so many American hearts? Does that end white-supremacy and privilege? No. It just keeps people in check from the outward expression of those things. In Spain (and other countries) they’re all about the freedom of expression. And as other posters have said they are not as puritanistic about nudity as we are…they have topless beaches and all that over there. So they do portray crazy things in their media that wouldn’t go over well here. But I’d say that certainly doesn’t make them more racist than we are. More crass maybe…but that’s about it.

Ok, let’s understand a couple of things …
1. This artist is Spaniard, not Latino/Mexican/etc. Spain is a country just so everybody is clear. It just disgusts me that people still relate Mexicans with “Spanish” people (correct word is Spaniard for those born in Spain and Latinos for those from Latin America)
2. The artist, who happened to be from Spain, is fully responsible for her acts not the country where she is from. And I agree, she should not have done this. It is disrespectful. Michelle Obama deserves the greatest respects just like every other woman in the planet.
3. We are all the same deep inside. If you have written something on this blog because you feel offended, , it is understandable, but why being disrespectful towards other minorities? We are doing the same thing the artist did. Come on, we all have red blood.

A picture is worth a thousand words. I did read this article from KultureKritic. I don’t believe the writer did their due diligence of research, outside of comparing this image to the original portrait, and thinking of it as negative, and that of an “enslaved woman”. It’s actually a picture representing emancipation of women and people of African decent. “At the time of its title, the word “Negress” wasn’t pejorative”. The picture is actually representing multiple stages of equality for women, especially women of color. “This image became a symbol for women’s emancipation and black people’s rights” We see through so many lenses, but only focus on one. Shame. The first Lady is obviously a contract and comparison between past and present, sticking to the orginal artist theme of portraying art through history, and in this case women and women of color through history.

We must maintain our dignity and give our 1st Lady and Our President the utmost respect and support. I am not surprised by the photo or many other displays of ignorance in impetuousness show by the Anglicized, bastardized mutts of Spain and their European and American redneck cousins. Pity the Spaniards who have not recovered from the African conquest of their homeland nor the African blood that runs through their veins.
Spaniards are trying to be accepted as caucasians; they want to convince so called white Americans they are just as racist as many of them are.
