Republican Leader Says that Rape Pregnancy is a “Blessing”
Sharon Barnes, a high ranking Republican out of the state of Missouri, made some comments that might even be considered worse than those made by her colleague, Todd Akin. Coming to the defense of Akin, who said that it’s virtually impossible for a woman to get pregnant while being raped, Barnes was quoted by the New York Times as saying: ”If God has chosen to bless this person [the rape victim] with a life, you don’t kill it.”
She went on to say that abortion “is not an option,” since apparently, the abundant blessings of being pregnant after being raped are just too great to pass over.
We’re not sure where she’s coming from, but it’s hard to classify a rape pregnancy as any kind of blessing. Some women might not want to look their rapist in the face every time they feed their newborn baby. Barnes hails from the bible belt, just like Akin, coming out of the city of St. Louis. She has been president of the 2nd Congressional District Republican Women’s organization, Vice President of the Missouri Federation of Republican Women and similar positions.
With the presidential election coming up, Republican strategists may make the brilliant proposal that the organization just keep the words “women,” “rape” and “abortion” out of their mouths until after the election. This is getting really messy.

I have read the testimony of married woman and mom who was raped and refers to her child that was conceived from that tragic ordeal, as a blessing. She loves all her children the same and her husband loves the child as well. It is quite a powerful story. The fact is, though we may say “oh, it would be sooooo hard to look at the rapists face everytime they look at the child”, how many testimonies have you heard from woman who were actually raped, conceived a child and says that they are having difficulty accepting their child. Who are we to say that the child is not a blessing? Who would truly think, when that child, so helpless and beautiful, is not a blessing. Of course the rape is not a blessing. There are many things that happen in life that are tragic and horrible, but that doesn’t mean blessings can’t come thru them. This is not a stupid statement. It is a statement based on love of a life, even though the life was brought forth thru evil and pain. So many are quick to judge, without facts in hand. It is tragic that we are so quick to judge each other, when the mote is no where near being cleared from our own eyes. Let the babies live to fulfill the plans of God. Does killing the baby somehow erase from memory the tragedy and the awefulness of the rape? I doubt it. The memory will live on with or without the baby. Why add another tragedy to the scenerio. Will it be easy? Of course not. But can it be done? The happy ending to the tragic beginning I mentioned earlier proves that it can be done.
If you got raped and were married…you mean to tell me you would keep the baby and your husband would agree!
I ain’t buying this pitiful comment because a woman has a right to ABORT or not to abort…it’s her body and her choice; not yours or the governments!

Very few women would be able to have the child of the man who violated them–very few. The women who are able to do this are very special, indeed–however, for the women who cannot and choose to abort, it is their right and their choice to do so. They didn’t ask to be raped, nor did they ask to become pregnant. Are we still living in the Dark Ages or what? These people are out of their minds and anyone who wants to put them in charge of running this country is just as nutty as they are.
I’m gonna need the Republican party to stop talking! They cannot help themselves…when they see a hole they immediately get out their shovels and dig in!

This may sound harsh, but I can see where this woman is coming from. However, most women don’t and so she should have kept her mouth shut. Akin’s comments, however, were unacceptable.
This is such a non argument. Everyone knows that abortion is wrong no matter what the circumstances are. If you don’t want your baby, give it up for adoption. The Ten Commandments are kicking your a***s, so you try to bend morality to your liking. I assure you, God won’t see it that way.
