For the record, not just drug dealing, but all felonies need to carry harsher sentences. However I believe that murder, drug trafficking, armed robbery, and the like should carry life sentences.

Is the sentence harsh? Yes. There has been enough drug deals and deaths as a result of drug deals in Black communities. All drug dealing, brokering drug deals, or any involvement in drug trafficking should carry harsh penalties (life sentences). Drugs like heroin, cocaine, crack cocaine, methamphetamine, etc,. destroy communities. One way to crush it is to make the penalties so severe that it isn’t worth taking the risk; and those that are bold enough to risk it should get life sentences. That’s how you stop it. For the record I was a street level drug dealer for a lot of years. My motto was, “If the profit justifies the risk then it is a risk worth taking.” Free advice from a former street level drug dealer, the penalties have to be severe to be be a deterant.

Man, stop talking about white people…talk about rich people. I’m white and did hard time (level IV) for possession of a gram of marijuana on a second offense in Alabama. There were all kinds of people doing crazy time, black and white. What everyone had in common? Insufficient access to counsel. Because we were all poor people in a world where freedom is for sale but we didn’t have the funds.

It is inhumane — and in my mind, this man is a political prisoner, not a criminal prisoner. He’s a political prisoner because of the war on drugs and because of the drug war policies to take down even the most thinly related people and to punish them excessively. And note that because he has been imprisoned all this time, he has not been able to father children…

Everytime I read about this young man, I get so angry at the betrayal of justice – there is no tempering with mercy. He should not be in prison for another day. It shames me as an American that we’re doing this — lets be honest. He IS a political prisoner, not a criminal prisoner.

The sentencing laws birth from the War on Drugs produced collateral damage that most can’t wrap their heads around. As a resident of Mobile, where Clarence is from and the case originates, the incarceration of of community members for extended periods of time for non-violent offenses resonates as cruel and unusual punishment. The sentencing laws did as much damage as the proliferation of drug use. We simply want Clarence freed as a just measure and a show of humanity and, ultimately, mercy.
