10 Things for Black Men to Remember When Pulled Over by the Police

Writing for NewsOne.com, Dr. Boyce Watkins gives 10 tips for black men when dealing with police encounters. Black males are far more likely to go to prison and to die in the custody of police than other citizens. All of this begins with the first stop by police, where things can sometimes get out of hand. Dr. Watkins offers these tips for those who wish to avoid these problems.

When NWA wrote “F*ck the Police” in the late 1980s, they were heavily criticized.  But the police brutality of which they were speaking was a racial boogeyman that remained hidden due to the high cost of home video cameras.   Rodney King changed all that, and it let America know that the relationship between black men and the police usually left us at the short end of the baton.

I am not an attorney.  I am just a scholar and a black man who cares about what happens when my brothers interact with that peculiar street gang, otherwise known as the police.  Sometimes, the cops are here to protect us.  But other times, they are here to protect everyone else from us.  So, interacting with police in a way that keeps us from losing our lives is absolutely critical.

Please note that this is not a substitute for legal advice.  I recommend that you speak to an attorney to get a more complete understanding of how to handle situations like this one.  But my Facebook friends, some of whom have solid legal backgrounds, helped me to compile this list of things you should keep in mind when dealing with the police.   Think about these issues carefully, for it might save your life:

NO the police just need to become more civilized and stop constantly racially profiling people 24/7…I’m from NYC I know how these Assholes operate, they only pull over black and Hispanic people. How is that fair?

Women it is also important to know how to handle our attitudes when we are pulled over as well. Everyday I see our feminine characters being chisseled away by the media, making us more male than female. Names like “STUD”, SILVERBACKS, and the names our men call us, reflects a diminished humanity, Bitch, Hoes and other undesirable names. Also movies, that we allow to cast us in unfavorable charatcer rolls; showing we are nothing but a fleshy ATTITUDE, rolling our necks and eyes, with a mouth not fit for the slop hogs eat. SO Stop, Take a Deep Breath and Think. Let the beautiful you respond when confronted with the BEAST-Police.

I was stopped just last night for absolutely nothing. I was wearing my seat belt and obeying all traffic laws, received no ticket, no explanation of why I was pulled over.

AMEN Gee, thank you, i agree. until black men and women start stricking these crooked cops back, then they will keep doing this illegal crap and getting away with it. Believe me, many ways to strick back at these cops.. Hey the Italina mob use to get at cops all the time back in the day.. So can we… When u tired of getting harassed and getting your ass whipped by these cops, hopefully you will wake up before its too late and do something to stop them.

negroes have attitudes that easy escalate into confrontations. It’s all about using your brain and keeping your comments to yourself. Jails are full of blacks, why deal with all that, live life enjoy yourself without all the mess. get beyond the attitude and smile be happy, it’s later than you think!

Yes, There Are A Lot Of Racist White Police In The United States. If Those Two Pieces Of Racist Trash Mitt Romney And Paul Ryan Become President And Vice President These Racist Police Are Going To Really Become Racist. They Will Be Shooting And Killing African Americans Like Crazy. Another Reason We Must Make Sure President Obama Get Re-Elected. Father God And Lord Jesus Is Showing Me They Want Us To Get Out And Vote For President Obama.
