Dr. Boyce: How King Barack’s Administration Has Neutered Black Leadership

Let me start from the truthful beginning: I love and respect Tavis Smiley and Cornel West immensely. I don’t care who knows it, and I don’t care who gets mad. I’ve had my differences with both men in the past, but I was taught that even if you admire someone, you should still be honest when you critique them. My mama reminds me of that every time we argue over politics. What I love most about Smiley and West is that they are among a small number of black voices that truly speak for those who are suffering the most. Rather than believing that symbolism pays the bills, they are seeking substantive evidence that any politician seeking the African American vote actually delivers what he or she promised. We can all agree that to whom much is given, much is expected; but this principle has been abandoned over the last four years.
With that being said, I can’t express how saddened I was to hear that Smiley & West, the radio show hosted by these two men, has been cut in several cities for a “lack of balance.” Boston, Chicago, and other major cities have let go of the show, likely due to the massive backlash that the two receive for disagreeing with King Obama.
I refer to Barack as “King Obama” because it appears that many African Americans don’t want a Democracy, but instead prefer an Aristocracy. We want the king to have absolute power, like Bishop Eddie Long running a vacation bible school for teenagers. Rather than living in a land that supports antiquated ideas like “freedom of speech,” we prefer a world where anyone who dares to question the will of the king should have his head cut off in public. Rev. Jesse Jackson, for example, has been cut off from the Obama White House for four years since being caught on camera saying that he wanted to remove some “critical body parts” of the president, but it is King Barack who has actually done all the neutering.
Not only have President Obama and his team dismantled and discredited nearly all of their African American critics (not via substantive arguments, since the black community is far worse off now than it was in 2008 – I challenge anyone to present data to the contrary), they’ve also emasculated many of their African American allies. Rev. Al Sharpton inexplicably went onto 60 Minutes and said that he would NEVER criticize President Obama, even if he was wrong or the black community was suffering (which it is). This kind of relationship is one that goes beyond the expectations of standard political support and ventures into the land of the blatantly corrupt and comically dysfunctional. Nearly every black analyst given a position on MSNBC, TheGrio or a few other outlets is expected to bow to the king at all times, or risk losing it all. This is NOT the way Democracy is supposed to work, and this is also why we continue to be disrespected as a viable political constituency.
Tavis and Cornel are important for the preservation of freedom within the black community. You don’t have to agree with them in order to appreciate their right to intelligent self-expression. If you think they’re wrong, then PROVE IT. Don’t just try to discredit them as irrelevant hacks. Any time we are more focused on suppressing inconvenient truths than confronting them, we are truly lost. It’s not as if anyone can argue that Cornel and Tavis are lying about the poverty problem in America, since every study imaginable says they are correct. It’s not as if anyone can say that they are misleading us about the depth of mass incarceration and urban violence, our children are filling up body bags and prison cells all across America. The dividing line that has emerged in black leadership today is that there are some who feel that the value of protecting a president from any form of black accountability far exceeds the consequence of seeing millions of people suffer in poverty, death and despair. I do not find this to be acceptable.
Where we’re getting it wrong is by believing that the best way to help President Obama is to sit and quietly wait for the administration to decide to do something for the black community. That’s like a mother who thinks she’s helping her son by not asking him to do his homework or clean his room until he feels like it. She’s not showing love for her son by behaving this way, she is making him all the more irresponsible and letting him call the shots inside the house. Similarly, a politician should not be telling you what his agenda is going to be, you should be giving him your agenda.
So, whether you support President Obama or someone else, you should never give your vote to a politician without telling them what you expect in return. We also need a range of voices that encourage each of us to assess all relevant information and make sound decisions for ourselves. The fact is that both the Democrats and the Republicans are threatened by free-thinking black people, and it might be time for all of us to get our butts off the plantation.

What you’re witnessing is democracy in it’s purest form. Tavis Smiley and Dr. Cornell West wouldn’t have simply been taken off the air…especially if they were generating a profit.
I don’t want to do the legwork, but I’m going to go out on a limb and say that they were simply on those stations because they were a “Black” voice. Once it was determined that they no longer spoke for the demographic area that pays the bills…they became expendable…and not a soul cares, save their kindred spirits.
They would like to have the listening public believe that they are telling “the truth”, when in fact they are just telling “a truth”…their truth to be exact. Unfortunately, truth is a very relative term. To put a finer point on that thought, I’ll use your Al Sharpton reference. I didn’t see the episode, but here is an excerpt I Googled:
LESLEY STAHL, CBS (OFF CAMERA): Sharpton told us that having a black president is a challenge: if he finds fault with Mr. Obama, he’s aiding those who want to destroy him. So he has decided not to criticize the president about anything – even about black unemployment that’s twice the national rate.
STAHL (ON CAMERA): Have you told other blacks not to criticize him publicly?
REV. AL SHARPTON: What I’ve told them is to be genuine about it. There are some blacks that said, “He needs to go with a black agenda. He needs to do this.” He said when he was running he wasn’t gonna do that. Duh. Surprise.
STAHL: But just because he didn’t campaign on improving unemployment in black areas, why aren’t you out there saying, “We need more done?”
SHARPTON: What I don’t want to see is because he is black that we act like he’s not the real president. “He ought to be leading the black cause or the labor cause.” He’s the president. To minimize who he is, I think is an insult to the achievement of having him there.
STAHL (OFF CAMERA): Given his loyalty and his change from confrontational to accommodating, the administration is rewarding him with access and assignments, like making him a spokesman for their education policy and sending him on the road with Newt Gingrich, of all people, to build support for hiring better teachers.
I can’t see where Sharpton said he wouldn’t criticize Obama…and if this is what you are basing your claim, then I have as big a problem with this “embellishment” of the matter as the public has with Romney/ryan doing the same.
Dude, WBEZ is listner supported, goverment supported public radio. This cancellation had nothing to do with profits or balance. This is specifically about limiting the views listeners are exposed to. That it happened during this tight presidential election is no accident.
If you do your homework/research, you will know that President Obama was not elected, he was selected. His policies closely mirror that of the last 3 Presidents before him. He has killed more Black/Brown people in war than Bush and Clinton combined. People are so caught up in the romantic idea of having a Black President, that they refuse to hold him accountable in any way. That is just wrong. I applaud Messrs West and Smiley for having the courage to speak out.

1. Someone who stated that they wanted to de-ball me in a “semi-private” arena wouldn’t be welcome in my house. It’s unfortunate but why should anyone expect Jackson to be invited? He’s the President of the US, not the Homie in the White House.
2. For the President to work specifically on behalf of the black community is political lunacy. They’d be planning EVERY day, ALL day. No one’s surprised that an Obama affair hasn’t come out of the woodwork???
3. Oprah can do pretty much whatever the h**l she wants because she doesn’t hold a political office. Travis and West are the perfect people to do the same, regardless of the money. I’m baffled at why they chose to spend time criticizing instead of mobilizing. If they’re so concerned about the black community, we could use some powerful black presidents, I mean leaders. Obama’s not the President of Black Folks. If black Americans could only take advantage of what we have in this country and change our thinking/behavior/self-talk, we wouldn’t need handouts. We are a powerful people.

Put your body into it not only your mouth. Pro-lifers fight for the unborn but once they are born they are the first to scream why are they on the county? Why are there so many in the foster system? Why arent the fathers doing more?
So for those that want someone to rescue the black community start with the schools in the area. Volunteer YOUR time. Speak up when you see children abused, parents demeaning the child, running the streets instead of homework time, fathers pay darn child support, mothers actually taking the time to know a man before she has his baby, better yet why not wait until you have a job and can support your own child.
There are so many things a person can do in their own house before asking the President of the United States to step in an be the parent in your house.
He is a role model as many others are. If the black community..PARenTS…start putting their own kids first…actually care, guide, love and support them…then they can scream out no one is helping make it better. Because you know you are doing what a real parents does.
Kids learn by what they see, not just hear. They dont need 200 dollar shoes, name brand everything or a new car. They need real parenting not buying them stuff.
They need parents that go to back to school nights, go to their sports games, help with homework and teach kids to earn things.
Once parents..PARENTS..become their own kids role model their is no need for anyone else to come in and rescue you.

Dear Doctor…now’s not the time for deviseness amongst us , not unless you really want a King Mitt ! We can get after the president after we get him elected for a second term . Until then we must keep our eyes on the prize or we will end up repeating history . You know the old saying : one step forward and two steps back . No doubt that there are a few of our intellectuals who are dear and kindhearted people, loving people. West and Smiley have shown us that their efforts are genuinely altruistic and heartfelt.
On the other hand there are “black” people who are not working towards the betterment of our community but are working for the betterment of their personal gains! We should be able to differentiate between the two, but mental blockages are causing many of us to see the big picture in a very convoluted manner.
We, many of us, also tend to put our trust in the ‘American’ social structure. A society that has a history of brutality and discriminatory abuse towards us. We have seen our people beaten, murdered and suffering every day of every century! The things we see now have been vastly distorted, and many of us are seeing things through ‘rose colored glasses’ and have lost track of who we are dealing with and what they are capable of.
One of our problems is, through all of this horrific history and present mistreatment, we still have a hard time understanding the level of deception, secretive conniving, and brutality the “Anglo-elite” are capable of. We believe that just because our struggles won us the right to vote and participate in the political machinations of this sordid society that our votes actually count for something! It never occurs to many of us that the “elite” have changed the game, flipped the script and pulled another of their many fast one’s on us!
Further more, those of us who have studied the history of African slavery should understand how easily the “white man” can use “black skinned” people to serve their sordid purposes! We (many of us) fail to realize that Mr.Obama has shown us so much disdain as to prove that he is not favorable to us, and he has shown so much representation of the Anglo-elite as to allow them to use his name and consequently ‘our name’, as they move forward to commit genocide as they pillage more of the nations of ‘people of color’ at a more blatant rate and speed!
Many of us are so inundated with the ‘fantasy’ of the American life and the “American dream” that we cannot differentiate between our altruistic heroes and the typical “black overseers” and yes men who serve the ‘white-dominant’ social structure, In which we are still captured, abused, mistreated, and experimented-on! Believe me when I say that the Anglo-elite and their cohorts have got our number and many of us do not have a clue!

This is from a 70 year old Black man who attended all Black schools from first grade through twelfth and proud of it and our president. My point is you/we should not begrudge others their achievements because nothing comes to Blacks on a silver plate. Remember each and everyone of us has paid dues for achievements whites take for granted just because of skin color.
The real stooges are the people who line up every four years and give 90 percent of their votes to the Democratic presidential candidate. John F. Kennedy in 1960, was the last Democrat who had to actually contend for the Black vote. Since then Democratic candidates and presidents have taken the Black vote for granted. Toss a few crumbs, make some high-profile appointments and the Black vote is theirs. Then proceed incarcerate more Black males than any president in history, as Bill Clinton did. I’m sure you voted for Slick Willie.

Before you get too far off listening to your own rage, check this. All of the legislation that President Obama tried to have passed, was obstructred by the Republican based Congress. They vowed to do this the day he was elected. During the last year the Republicans only passed two pieces of legislation and neither of them regarded any legislation President Obama tried to put in place. Look a little deeper OK. The President doesn’t just say something and it happens. He has to get issues and items through Congress. Yet, if Congress decided early on that would never happen, it will never happen. No one predicted this, especially the President. I find it low that you would be so willing to spout your hatred and venom about the President, regarding who you feel he belongs to as well as who he caters to. Many promises were made election time, but as I said, nothing gets done that can’t get past Congress and I’m sure you should be aware of this. Many people have their rhetoric opinions and speak with such authority as to what should have transpired and why. However, what I don’t hear is how they could have ran against him and won. When a man has the entire free world to run, realistically it would take more than four years to obtain success for every issue he tackles. But of course, so many African Americans sit around and complain that their issues are not being addressed without taking a further look at what caused some of the issues and what they could have possibly done about it. The President can’t raise your children or keep them from being disrespectful gang members who’s only interest is to destroy everything they encounter. He can’t stop the violence they choose to become part of. Or stop them from killing each other over a (d**n color). The inner cities are under seige, well what is the President supposed to do to stop us from killing one another? That is what we choose to do for no reason at all. All this violence is no more than an outlet for self imposed hatred and misguided frustrations. Why expect the President to stop and fix the reasons for the violence when your elected city officials (who look the other way) waiting for him, as mothers cry and bury their children yet again. The problem with our children is us. Why do they feel they need to be involved in things that can only result in death or incarceration. He can’t answer that question. The President can’t make our community liveable when we insist on allowing it to run down. As an example he can’t make grown men sit on their stoop and watch an old woman walk up and down to clean the neighborhood alone. She can’t clear the empty lots of bottles, yet they won’t even try. The President can’t hold your elected officials accountable, that is their obligation. The President can’t stop us from choosing to become victims only to victimize others to support habits, we freely chose to get involved with. He didn’t put us in a position that will require, (those who choose to disrespect us) to stop us from hurting/killing each other. The President can’t make us go to school and educate ourselves to be a help to our community instead of a hinderence. He can’t raise our children, that is our job. The President can’t ruin your credit, you already did that. Now you want him to make it possible for you to have all your dreams come to. The President can’t make us stop supporting each other as we sit and complain that everyone else can come to this country and get over. Were here, have been here yet aren’t making plans to conribute to our communities in a positive way. It’s ours, yet we allow others to come and take advantage of the very things we allow to slip through our fingers. We have everything we will ever need to become successful. We realize what we need and we also realize we haven’t honestly put our efforts into getting what we want. Our grandparents never experienced the help we have today. Yet they carried themselves with dignity, raised our parents with dignity and respect for themselves and others. They were willing (as many did) to die so we could have the opportunities we easily give away, while sitting back to blame President Obama. Not President Bush, or President Clinton (the first black President, yeah right) but President Obama who had every disregarded mistake intentionally placed in his lap, while others plotted he would fail at getting them completed. Stop and think, why do many of us have nothing in the United States of America, then ask yourself what did you do to contribute to it.

I was at the Underground railroad Museum in the Nati a month ago and you should have seen the good folks there eager to learn about our story, Amerikka’s story. The White folks in the place were most of educated means( I did not see any rednecks or trailer trash) and the U of Cincinnati and a few high schools had students there also. I did not hear anyone say in any of the exhibits ” just because they recorded this doesn’t make it true.”(Brian). This article is disgusting and truly indicative of what is wrong with many African Americans. Let me start by saying jealously always hide behind something. In this case, I suggest Smiley and West as the ones sitting by the door. Nothing in our society bridges unrest like a cultures going against it self. The African American Community is lacking in ways that other cultures, as I see it, have, while continuing to out pace African Americans in this country. We just can’t stop back stabbing and tricking off insults to one another. We refuse to assist in the positive while, willing to assist in the negativity that has already destroyed much of our community. Questions… in other cultures like or dislike each other they simply refuse to dismiss or degrade one another. The take it as an affront if one of them is treated in a disrespectful way or manner. In other words, THEY STICK TOGETHER, PERIOD. I’ve frequently heard that African Americans have been forgotten in the Obama Administration. This is simply not true. How many people in any African American Community, don’t either have or know someone who needs, receives or has earned their Medicare. Other than Hispanics, and Poor Whites, African Americans are one of the largest group, requiring Medicaid benefits, as well as Social Security Disability. Where would we be without low income childcare, or help from soup kitchens for the working poor, lower tuition rates and Pell Grants. Many of the policies that President Obama either has or attempted to put in place have been purposely obstructed by Republican members of Congress, aka, his Jobs Bill. If we look a little closer instead of away from “US” perhaps we could finally get together and get to our own, with the help of the First African American President. This is a historical time for African Americans. Our pride is evident in the children who aspire to emulate the pride in themelves that Barack Obama has shown them. Agree or not he has been a sterling example as a black leader and respected diplomat throughout the world. For those of us who don’t realize this or choose to negate these important facts about REAL LIFE, I wish I could offer better advice. For hundreds of years black have been viewed and treated as low, dirty, ignorant, lazy, back biting, dependent, pimping, whoring, disrepectful, living like dogs. no class people. We’ve always known better, and as hard as we’ve all tried, these images and ways of thinking never left many of the minds that choose to hold on to those sterotypical mind sets. Despite all of our protests, it only reached deaf ears. Barack Obama changed all of that. He flew in the face of their chosen points of view. He isn’t everything they thought they knew. He speaks “OUR” voice by virtue of being one of “US”. Yes, one of us, that part cannot be denied, and because of that part, he has been the object of every insult, disparaging remark, blatant racist term ever made to any President in history. His life has been threatened, his wife compared to animals, his mother defamed on film and his father referred to as a w***e master. Throughout this, he held his dignity and continued to represent all of us in his position as the most powerful man in the WORLD. His power is ours and we should embrace it as an example to support all of us. This is the one thing that is revolting for much of this society to digest and acknowledge. For that reason we should support him even more.

We have a Black president and a Black economic depression. All we get from Obama’s supporters are excuses, excuses, excuses for his lack of courage to specifically address these critical problems.
With only a few weeks to go before election day, things are only getting worse. Regardless of illuminated objections to voter supression, many feel they have a legal right, to place these obstacles in our way. As they feel they should, we know they don’t and we should fight hard to let them know, we will not give up the right that is more important to us than any other. In that respect things will be harder for us. But hard is what we’ve always faced and hard is what we’ve always succeeded against. WE CAN DO THIS. I read an article recently, were someone detailed how for 1000′s of years the Ertherns, had no democracy. No one thought they deserved or cared anything about democracy. However during the process of elections, they were told they could vote with pen and paper. When the community arrived to the voting area, there were no pencil or paper there for them to cast their vote. The Erthern people were so determined to have their voices her, regarding their democracy, the chewed their fingers and signed their names in blood. What I cannot understand is why would anyone have to convinced to fight for their Democracy. During the last debate we saw President Obama in one of his best stances ever. He stood up for his achievements as well as his vision for the country. The expectation many have regarding the levels of his achievements is ludicris. In all honesty, should he really have straightened up eight years of trash left by GWB, in four years. The country was demolished. Nothing was left to genuinely attempt to build a viable society in or towards. Enter Barack Obama. From the moment he announced he was going to run for President the world changed. The entire political system suddenly became an arena of tricks and games, as obvious racism was screamed from ever roof top available. And yet he persevered. He beat Hillary Clinton…yes Hilllary Clinton. The Clinton name is synomous with nothing but success and unchallenged political views in the world. Nonetheless, up jumped, the little black man with the large ears and knocked her off her block. And we were proud. We cheered, stood in lines, declared our support and demonstrated our determination to elect the first accepted African American President. Suddenly we respected each other, we were a family. we had a black president. Surely he was elected by most of American and yet we thought he belonged to us alone. However, when the day following, didn’t complete with President Obama knoking on our individual doors and giving us the world, we had nothing for him to do. After all he had walked out on blacks. He had only used blacks to get where he was only to cater to the whites of this world and act like something he was not. What a ugly expression of ignorance. What a bunch of ill formed impressions for blacks to continue to live with, yet we didn’t shake it off. No wonder we find it so difficult to step forward and bring our communities up and out of disgrace and disrespect. Listen ujp people, it starts with us. We live in our communities. We see what we need, we know what local authorities are and are not willing to contribute to our success even in the most minor ways. We pay taxes to people who never see us. Never collect our trash, run our schools properly, protect us from crime and listen to our needs as a people. We simply wait and see what Barack Obama will do for us, when we steadfastly refuse to do for our selves. He can’t sweep our stoops, keep our children off the corners, make us stop drinking, smoking or allowing our personalities to join into the hopelessness that so many feel is what we deserve. President Obama has put many opportunities before us to get up and get on with the lives we deserve. He put it there, he’s just not going to knock on our individual doors and put it in our hands.
