Right Wing Rehashes Old News With 2007 Obama Hurricane Katrina Video
In a video dredged up by right wing blog The Daily Caller, presidential candidate Barack Obama speaks to an audience of black ministers, including Rev. Jeremiah Wright, and touches on Hurricane Katrina.
“The people down in New Orleans they don’t care about as much” says Obama. He goes on to point out the difference between the government’s response to Hurricane Katrina and its response to 911 and other disasters.
“Now here’s the thing,” Obama continues, “when 9-11 happened in New York City, they waived the Stafford Act — said, ‘This is too serious a problem. We can’t expect New York City to rebuild on its own. Forget that dollar you gotta put in. Well, here’s ten dollars.’ And that was the right thing to do. When Hurricane Andrew struck in Florida, people said, ‘Look at this devastation. We don’t expect you to come up with y’own money, here. Here’s the money to rebuild. We’re not gonna wait for you to scratch it together — because you’re part of the American family.’”
What is interesting here is how the right wing is trying to use Obama’s comments on Katrina to demonstrate that Obama accused the government of racism, but they refuse to ever ask the question of whether race actually played a role in the government’s response. If Obama is right about the Stafford Act, isn’t that a problem? Isn’t that what people should be paying attention to? And how is New Orleans rebuilding? Right wingers seem to have no problem behaving as racists, but they don’t want anyone to ever call them out on it, or discuss whether or not race played a role in any of life’s outcomes.
In the video Obama also gives “a special shout-out” to Jeremiah Wright during the speech, calling him “a friend and great leader”, saying he introduced him to Jesus Christ.
Thankfully, it doesn’t appear that the mainstream media is taking the bait offered by the right wing media, mostly because they already covered Obama’s speech in 2007. The American people and the media have moved on. The only folks still fixated with race are the folks at the Daily Caller.
