Rep. Keith Ellison Calls Opponent ‘Scumbag’ Twice During Debate

The fireworks we saw during the second presidential debate don’t have anything on the animosity between Congressman Keith Ellison and his Republican opponent, Chris Fields. Both men are vying to represent Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, and things took a turn for the worst during a debate yesterday when Fields  brought up some of the terms of Ellison’s 2010 divorce. Fields also accused Ellison of delving into his own divorce. And it all erupted with Ellison seeming to lose control, calling Fields a “lowlife scumbag,” and a “real gutter-dweller.”

During the debate, Rep. Ellison tried to warn Fields, saying “don’t go there” when Fields starting bringing up Ellison’s personal life, but Fields would not be dissuaded.

“You’re really stupid for bringing up your own domestic abuse allegation,” Rep. Ellison quipped when Fields injected the issue of divorce into the debate. “I wasn’t going to say a thing about it.”

“Talk about your own (divorce),” Fields replied, “talk about the fact that you only pay $500 in child support…Talk about…”

“You are a massive…you are a lowlife scumbag,” Rep. Ellison said. “You are a lowlife scumbag. You are a gutter-dweller.”

Ellison later apologized for the name calling, but it is doubtful that any of the bad blood will go away. The fact that these two men weren’t discussing policies, but their own failed marriages, is a testament to how the politics of personal destruction now defines political campaigns. When two men who want to represent voters are on stage calling each other names and bringing up divorce documents, it’s the communities that these men represent that truly lose.

The stupid, disrespectful insults coming from the rightwing nuts is a bit overwhelming at times. I can see why this Brotha could just go off on one of them. They are some awful bunch of scoundrels.

Candidate Fields has no chance of defeating Rep. Ellison in Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District, the most heavly populated District in the state, which includes Minneapolis. Just like Herman Cain, Chris Fields is just being used by the GOP as a disposable commodity, used to attack and disrupt. He has no plan for the people in the 5th district, there are too many people of color in the district.
