Pro-Life Congressman Who Pressured Mistress to Have an Abortion Refuses to Step Down

Even in the midst of Mitt Romney’s flip flops, there is one thing about the Republican Party that never changes; their belief that rules are for everyone but them.

Take family values Congressman Scott DesJarlais of Tennessee, for example. He’s a Tea Party Congressman who opposes abortion, at least in public, but in private he pressured his mistress, who was also a patient, to have an abortion.

The Tea Party-backed Republican recorded a conversation with his mistress, during which he told her that he was trying to save his marriage, and encouraged her to have an abortion.

“You told me you’d have an abortion, and now we’re getting too far along without one,” DesJarlais tells his mistress during the recording.

“You told me you would have time to go with me and everything,” the woman snaps.

“I said, if I could, I would, didn’t I? And I will try,” DesJarlais says. “If I can [find] time, you’re saying you still will?”

“Yeah,” the woman answers.

According to that Republican logic, you should be required to keep your rape baby, but their mistresses should have unfettered  access to abortion doctors. Sound fair?

The Huffington Post contacted the Congressman regarding the tape earlier this month, and he did not deny the allegations, although he did try to deflect attention away from his hypocrisy.

“Desperate personal attacks do not solve our nation’s problems, yet it appears my opponents are choosing to once again engage in the same gutter politics that CBS news called the dirtiest in the nation just 2 years ago.”

Exposing a candidate’s duplicity is not desperate. What’s desperate is hookin’ up with your patient, impregnating her, and then trying to talk her into having an abortion to save your own skin. That’s pretty desperate.

Since these revelations were unearthed in the middle of October, Republicans have pressured the Congressman to step down, but yesterday, the candidate laughed off the suggestion that he should step down. He doesn’t see an issue.
