NYT: Life Expectancy Shrinking Among Poor Whites

One of the most curious aspects to the opposition of Obamacare by the right is how many of those screaming the loudest are poor whites who would benefit from the program. Some of the poorest white people are the most strongly opposed to Obamacare. And a New York Times article says that lack of health care is part of the reason that the life expectancy among poor whites is shrinking:

For generations of Americans, it was a given that children would live longer than their parents. But there is now mounting evidence that this enduring trend has reversed itself for the country’s least-educated whites, an increasingly troubled group whose life expectancy has fallen by four years since 1990. …

The reasons for the decline remain unclear, but researchers offered possible explanations, including a spike in prescription drug overdoses among young whites, higher rates of smoking among less educated white women, rising obesity, and a steady increase in the number of the least educated Americans who lack health insurance.
The article goes on to say that life expectancy for black women without a diploma has surpassed that of white women without a high school diploma. White undeducated women actually saw the steepest decline in life expectancy, five years, between 1990 and 2008.
Groups don’t normally go in reverse where life expectancy is concerned, so this data has shocked researchers:
We’re used to looking at groups and complaining that their mortality rates haven’t improved fast enough, but to actually go backward is deeply troubling,” said John G. Haaga, head of the Population and Social Processes Branch of the National Institute on Aging.
The life expectancy for white women without a high school diploma was 73.5 years, compared with 83.9 years for white women with a college degree or more. Blacks still do not live as long as whites, but life expectancy is improving for black people.

Not enough information in this ariticle. It leaves more questions than answers. For instance: We heard over and over again that black women are dying, at an alarming rate due to the HIV virus. Now, all of a sudden, they’re living longer than poor white women? Blacks have recently lost over half of their wealth, due to the housing debacle. They are 22% poorer than whites, so why are they living longer? With black men unemployed and killing each other at an alarming rate, how is black life expectancy growing? It doesn’t add up. Something is either wrong with the data we’ve been given before, or there’s something wrong with this data we’re getting now.

You all read too many stories concentrated in specific areas. There may be crime on the southside of Chicago, L.A. and many other inner cities but that doesn’t mean the entire group of people in the US who consider themselves black have decreased because of murders. For every black person in jail there are even more blacks who still go to work and live in communities today.

Also, Appalachaians refused any doctors of color for the longest from the rural health program. They’d rather die than have an Indian or black doctor. That’s a societal issue that has made them believe they are superior to people of color yet they’re in the same boat or worse as many other Americans.

Many Americans period lost their wealth in the real estate debacle. However, many black people didn’t own real estate so you can’t say black people lost half of their wealth.

As for the HIV epidemic, yes the numbers are high for many blacks. However, the CDC’s reporting is not telling the whole story. For every 50% increase they report 94% don’t have the disease.

Many of you need to do some research and stop reading quick news articles. It will enlighten you on the truth and not blanket statements.
