Lupe Fiasco Fires Back at D. L. Hughley: You Really Care About Black People? You Put Up 50k and I’ll Put Up 50k
Last week, D.L. Hughley criticized Lupe Fiasco’s stance against voting, saying “He’s bright as h**l, but dumb in the ways of the world,” Hughley told Hot 93.7/Hartford. “Young black men are going to listen to him. They are the ones who have decisions made for them, [decisions] that they are not even involved in, which is silly to me.”
Lupe fired back via Twitter, challenging D.L. Hughley to help him to put money into the black community instead of waiting for elected officials to lend a helping hand.
Fiasco tweeted, “Better yet @RealDlHughley you put up 50k and I’ll put up 50k and let’s flesh out some programs for rural and inner city youth our d**n selves.”
The rapper continued in a second tweet: “Obama need swing states and white people not radical rappers kissing his a*s to win this election.”
And lastly: “When you ready to drop that bread for these babies out here, @RealDlHughley holla at me… til then #LeeMeAlone.”
Lupe Fiasco is clearly making the point that it’s time for black people to do for themselves, in the tradition of Booker T. Washington, and stop waiting for the corrupt political system to work for them. In that sense, Lupe is challenging Hughley to put up or shut up. Voting one day out the year is easy, but donating $50,000 of your hard earned money is hard. As of now, there is no indication that Hughley will accept Lupe’s challenge.

Its a tax write off for both, 50gs shouldn’t be a problem! Instead of these two Negroes having a beef, why not come together and challenge all Black entertainers to put up 50gs.
Agian, it’s tax write off, they will get there money back, and Black kids will benefit…a win, win for everyone.
I believe that’s Lupe’s whole point.
He challenged DL to put up 50gs, not all celebrities. Get it right!
His point is: If those in the Black community with the money to do will stop talking shi-, and start putting their money where their mouths are, then maybe young Black folks can see that there are some folks out there who actually care about them, which could change their perceptions of themselves. Lupe tweeted DL, but those of us with functioning brains know that he is talkin’ to all who has the means to do what he is asking of DL.
you must be a mind-reader because the only challenge made by lupe was to d.l. to put up 50gs.
stop making up s**t for lupe, his beef is with d.l., he didn’t say anything about others putting up money to match him or d.l. that’s a entirely new topic you’re creating in your support of lupe.
please stop and stay on topic, both should ask all celebrities to put up 50gs to match theirs and drop the beef.
Well said, What you say Ugh, @RealDL??
Fiasco needs to sit his dumb a*s down! if you wanna make a difference MAKE IT!!! What’s the point of waiting for others!? ALL TALK, NO ACTION!!!
Actually, Fiasco was replying to Hughley. Hughley started this.. and it looks like Fiasco finished it.
Actually, I am unsure at why you are so confident at asserting that Lupe is all talk when he has done numerous things for his African American Community. I find it highly suspect when people are objectionable to conscious individuals…
Actually Lupe does plenty! I’ve personally helped his foundation in Chicago SMART AZZ! Before you go sounding off do your research! Here I’ll help you start: http://www.lupefiascofoundation.org/. Now you tell me who’s the DUMB AZZ!
Someone need to pull Lupe’s a*s over their knee! What the h**l kind of sense does it make for ANY of “us” to go around ranting about NOT voting when our Black a***s spilled MUCH blood & died for that very right?? Whatever Lupe has done in his lifetime thus far to help lift up his people, I thoroughly commend, BUT, it’s reckless & stupid (while you KNOW you have millions of impressionable fans) to totally dismiss the MOST significant right that we possess. If the majority of the Black community were to latch-on to his mindset & not bother to vote, what do you believe would happen? (think about it)
It’s idiotic and obtuse to even mouth such foolishness, especially with how the RACIST powers-that-be are trying their damnedest to take us right out of the game. THAT is exactly what the h**l they want & he’s helping them!!!
Don’t get me wrong, a good portion of what Lupe says is very much on point. I’m not totally enchanted with Obama’s first term myself, but w/that being said, TRUST ME – we Do Not want the other side to occupy that seat. Foreign affairs will be the VERY LAST d**n THING we will wind up being concerned with. As far as I’m concerned, Lupe need to grow the h**l up and learn how this whole d**n thing work because if he believes talkin that mess helps his people’s bottom line, he is sadly mistaken in the worst way. His words has weight, he’s not just some Joe Blow out there takin to nobody & he has to understand that.
So I say yes, do both, Vote and Give Back. They are in no way at all mutually exclusive.
You really need to work on your grammar and punctuation if you want to be taken seriously when making long, drawn out rants like the one above.
Umm…not really. I find that people often attack grammar and other nonsense when they have no valuable contribution to the conversation. If you do not agree with the comment then just say so or make a valid counterpoint. But making comments about something trivial as grammar is childish.
And what part of it that you didn’t understand?
Will we ever learn? Thank you for your comments. I can’t wait until this election ends! If it does not end soon, I’m going to lose all respect for my people, who are perishing for the lack of knowledge.
Lupe is making a difference, but he cannot do it alone. He’s asking for help from others in the Black community with the means to help…at least Lupe is not sitting on his a*s waiting for Obama to make it happen. Didn’t Obama ask us all to help him make a difference, or to help him change America after he won in 2008? well, Lupe is doing that with his time, money and love of and for his community.
I think it’s a d**n good idea. If I had money like that I’d get in on this. I think they should challenge ALL minority celebs, athletes, politicians, businesspeople, etc.. If you’re making those bucks like that, get together and give back and let’s do this ourselves!
Lupe should encourage people to vote for a party that will work for us. You have to vote in the Presidential election and midterm election, until we get all the right people in office to do whats best for us. Its President not King everything has to be voted on. At the same time Lupe should do for the kids and all the other good stuff he said rather DL follow or not. Voting is taking control of your life.
Why not both, and? How about every black entertainer, millionaire, billionaire etc… ante up 50K and encourage young and the not so young to exercise their citizenship and their inherent rights, one of which is the right to vote. I say it’s moot to say who won or lost. Because when it’s all said and done, more is often said than done. Attention-grabbing, waste of time. Ante up, Line up at the polls or shut up! I say, for what it’s worth to you, and you get to decide that, right?
I don’t have 50 Stacks, but I do have $50.00. What if every AA ante’d up 50 bucks, x 42 million, that’s 2.1Billion, without beefing celebs.
Well, what did he expect? I bet he didn’t expect that! Choosing to take a different path does not make one ignorant to the ways of the world. If anything, he or she is very well aware of the ways of the world and can see how naked and dysfunctional it really is. They may see the world in it’s entirety not just the USA. The super powers of the world are now very weak. Fear rules, all over the world, it rules politics in a terrible way. Everyone is afraid and can feel the cold, so they huddle together although in different groups. However, some choose not to huddle, they step back and can see just how tiny those huddle are, they look around and see the vast structure and destruction of the entire system. Their eyes are actually very open, there are so many systems of government in their tiny huddle of imagined protection. Yet everyone one of them is failing those whom they represent. Some try very hard and may bring tiny relief to our house holds. But what about those who have no home, the casualties of war (mostly civilian), what about the starving. There is a great deal more going on outside the huddle. When we huddle together our backs are turned to what’s around us…so, can we REALLY SEE?
weeeeellllllllll D.L….your turn…..
There are many people like this young man, however not being high profile they go unseen. When things go terribly wrong because of the people whom are voted into office, people like Lupe are very often blamed for the mass damage. With eyes open he can see and understand that the blame is coming. He didn’t put those people there. The vast will NEVER understand where he’s coming from. They’re afraid to understand or it just may be that some do understand, but are afraid of being cast out. It’s only human.
Its truly not an either/or situation. All perspectives have some validity, BUT I would not be discouraging anyone to vote in any way as we need participation on all levels…its called widsom which goes far beyond perspective/opinion.
People like him are blamed for the wrong person getting in office! It is your responsibility to vote for what ever party you feel would allow everyone a chance to achieve their dreams while helping and encouraging others. Not just breathing and working, not the rich getting richer. Lupe has money it doesnt matter to him what party wins, but what about the kids he speak of?????????????
This fool represents a entire generation of “race hustlers” and “poverty pimps” Keep pointing “out there” to deflect from self-inflicted damage these negroes are doing to themseland the community they claim to love. A black man explodes every myth that racists like this clown has spent thirty years (making millions) perpetuating, and now, he gets to conscript the most powerful man in the world into a cause he hasn’t spent a dime alleviating.
Why does it always have to be either/or? Why can’t it be both? Both of these dudes have valid points…but, neither takes precedent over the other…of course, we have take more control and participate more in uplifting our own communities…but, to think that, just by doing that and not participating in the electorial process and being involved in local governmental functioning, etc., we, eventually, will defeat everything that we are attempting to accomplish, no matter how much money we put into it…these two guys are wasting their message potential, to those who need to hear a clarifying message…by not consolidating their presentation to show the importance of both processes…
AMEN!
To some it might look like a simple heated exchange between celebrities but hey, Lupe’s making a point here, he’s talking about people taking actions that make a difference rather than wasting their energy.votes are like petitions, they don’t achieve nothing when the decisions already made, just like they didn’t achieve nothing when ’twas already decided to murder Davis Troy
Once again a young african american rapper is making
A mistake.this young man should study the history of blacks voting surpression.he needs to go back to school ouand study black history
HA Lupe needs to go back and study BLACK HISTORY!! Clearly you know nothing of Lupe ergo I won’t bother.
Now, this is the subject that trumps all the other nonsense.
I want to know if their is a ‘hand’ in this voter self-suppression. Surely we can clearly see that there is an active white suppression of black vote.
If someone throws a grenade in your fox hole, you throw it back, not attack the fox hole. When did so many of us take this mind-set to bring President Obama down? What, I’m asking, is wrong with so many black people? Are we so naive that we think that any one person, president or not could change or help black America in 4 years–that’s clearly insane!
There have been 86 years of so-called Black History Months and black people have taught nothing and learned nothing. This is because they go to their churches and listen to someone reciting the ” I have a Dream Speech,” singing and dancing without any mention of our contribution to civilization or heaven forbid any mentioning of our disenfranchisement. They would drop-dead if they went to a Kwanzaa celebration or a ‘real’ history program. But, naw, they don’t want to hear ” all of that old black stuff”. My people are “perishing for a lack of knowledge.”
“Obama need swing states and white people not radical rappers kissing his a*s to win this election.”
TEAM LUPE!!!
What people miss is that for many, many of us-life doesn’t change no matter whose in office. The hustle still continues for Black folks. Unemployment, under employment, homelessness, mental illness, crime, poverty! Get your heads out of Obama’s ayz-he doesn’t care.
He cares more than Mitt Romney, wouldn’t you think?
And if DL Hughley doesn’t, will Lupe still drop 50k for something? Because if he won’t, then his challenge is nothing more than fluff.
Lupe has already given, and continues to give his time and money to helping our people. What are you doing? Are you giving money? If you don’t have $$$s to give, then are you giving time to help young kids learn to read, write correctly or figure out some of those confusing math problems they are faced with daily? What the h**l are you doing???
I personally love and have much respect for Lupe. Once more and again he is NOT encouraging young people not to vote. He is only stating that he doesn’t, which is his right! I am voting and yet I can respect Lupe’s desire not to! Lupe does put his money where his mouth is besides this little twitter non sense. D.L is all talk that’s all he does! Let me guess he will make a joke of it bcz he probably don’t have that kind of money no HOW! Mad love Lupe keep doing what your doing my brotha!!
@legally
D.L. Hughley’s net worth in 2011, $15 million. I’m sure he has 50gs, in addition it’s a tax write off.
‘Nuff said about that poverty sh*t!
How do you know that Hughley has not given or how much he’s given to the campaign?
What D.L. shouuld ask Lupe is how much is the “man” paying him (Lupe) to actively talk up “black voter self-suppression”??
I lot of people like to state their ignorant or bias opinions on situations they’ve either never dealt with or have mininal to no knowledge about. Facts don’t lie. Lupe has time and time again been a champion of his people.
I LOVE Lupe. This is a young man. He has more sense and more to say then some twice his age. Age ain’t nothin’ but a number. It’s what in your heart and mind. Kudos Lupe!
Do not be blinded by their fight. VOTE!!!
I agree with DL on this one. If black peoples votes didn’t matter there wouldn’t be countless efforts to suppress black participation in elections. All Americans particularly black people need to take the time to do some basic research on the politicians who we trust to do what is best for us and then use our vote. This does not mean black people should wait on these people to solve our problems of black on black violence, unfair incarceration, low educational attainment, absent fathers, unemployment and the list goes on. It is unreal to believe that the same people who help create and perpetuate the system that create this $?!@ will change it. VOTE get new people!

PEOPLE DIED FOR US TO HAVE THE RIGHT TO VOTE. NOBODY , WHITE OR BLACK SHOULD EVER DISCOURAGE OUR YOUNG PEOPLE NOT TO VOTE.
Its time somebody does something. I look at all the Black entertainers and athletes that could make a change, but they are all out for themselves. I myself look at my community and what I see is all ethnic groups working together to better themselfs, but here in Black America we still have that slave mentality. I’ve tried working with us,but its always dumb stuff. I put together the player coalition to unite people of all colors to make changes, but working with us has been challenging. So I stepped of the box to reach out to make a cultural change. Come join the Coalition@ evoleidlog@aol.com The change starts now! We can make a difference. Why wait on Politics to dictate our future.
100,000 is not going going to produce a “program”. It might add to one that already exist. Additionally, we all need to work to create change for our community, not just celebrities, etc. We ALL can do something…tired of hearing folks asking other folks to do what they should be doing for themselves. It doesn’t always involve cash…but time, effort, and vision.
I like Lupe as artist! I now like as a humanitarian. Now to Mr. Hughley I never found him as funny in his former TV show(s)
And he in no position to play an intellectual.
It is very easy to utter words, as Mr Hughley has done; however, the action thatcproduces change & will bare fruit is solely with Mr. Fiasco.
Negro put your money where your mouth is…………….
What does putting up 50K prove?
I totally agree with Left Wing! While everyone is paying attention to beef that doesn’t matter (which D.L. is right about) this election is going to change the course of too many lives. Look at the big picture people. Most of us on here are the 47% that is being talked about. If you really care about your children and the lives of their children you will NOT LET ANOTHER ELECTION GO BY WITHOUT CASTING YOUR VOTE.
How dare Lupe! He knows people died earning us the right to vote…
President Obama is the pipe piper and African-american follow him blindly around to the tune of his speeches and just the the follower of the pipe piper he is leading us nowhere with his empty speeches. I keep hearing how we will be so worst off if a Republican is elected President. It seems to me since I start keeping up with our condition we are already worst off. We have been at the bottom of the economic ladder for a 100 years; however we have had Democratic and Republican administrations. We have the highest unemployment rate 14.5%, our median income is the lowest(soon to be lower than hispanics), 38% of our children live in poverty, 40% of the prison inmates of African-american males, our young Black men of slaughtering each other in the street across the country, black males have one of the highest high school drop out rates, Black females head up almost 60% of our households(where are the daddies?). My question is; we have access to everything everyone else have access to: schools, colleges, we can start our own businesses, we are Mayors, Congressman, Senators,Doctors, Lawyers, millionaires, etc..So, how have the Republican kept us down for 150 years? I guess because they are so powerful; apparently more powerful than an entire race of people. Are’ it could be unlike other groups in this country we don’t know how to work together as a race. If it’s not that, then it must be those Republicans.
Right on Lupe I see Farrakhan Has sinked into your being, keep doing your thing Lupe but DL does have a point let’s just stick together on Everything we don’t have to always agree as Black People just come to an agreement! Racism is a Group Phenomina so we gotta regroup from Woop Woop & switch up our Strategy we can still win! Like MLK said in His Last Speech We as a People will get to the Promised Land! Some of these Lazy Hood Dummies need to do their part to get us Free! They want Bill Cosby to spend all his Money trying to free Nearly 50 Million Negroes! Bill was telling the truth about our people,if you don’t stand for something you will fall for Anything! Get your sh#t together My People don’t let the Hood or Satan take you Under!
yeah, thought so, hughlry’s a f*****g hippocrit he can go eat obama’s d**k!
the mind is a terrible thing to waste. get your g.e.d. fool.
Lupe is a fool. If he has programs that he started in Chicago, he must know that 100K isn’t enough to start a good “program”, much less programs. If you don’t want to vote for yourself, remember your history, fool, and vote on behalf of Mr. Emmett Till or the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King. #MakeSenseB4uOpenYourDumbMouth.
I’m not trying to be disrespectful Nokes, you may have already known this, but Emmett Till was killed for whistling at a white woman. Not to say that i don’t enjoy the right to whistle at any woman of any race lol but, I don’t think that falls into the same category as voting rights. Though it is going to take more than 100k for programs, I think what Lupe was trying to get across is if WE ALL put our money together (not just the two of them) we could really make an impact today. We are one of the biggest consumer groups in the country and don’t own anything. We sometimes think we are powerless because we don’t own, but we dish out so much money annually if we just kept some of it and gave it back to the community just as simply as we give to the plate at our churches it really would make a difference. Do you remember how quick Adidas pulled that slave looking shackle tennis shoe from the market? It was because black folks threatened to stop buying their products. That was just over a weekend of outraged comments online. Now thats power lol
It’s hard or change a culture. HIV for example: people know if they have s*x with someone infected but yet it continues to rise in the black community. Young un wed ladies who cal themselves Christians have babies and it is not through immaculate conception.
I see kids use drugs who know ful well what drugs do to a person. My daughter used my lap top and did not sign out of Face Book on her account. I saw the filthy speaking of young women talking like they are uneducated gangsta rappers and I thought thank goodness, I have no son to be exposed to this kind of girl.
You can affect change one person at a time and some are just gong t be who they are no matt what you do to intervene.
I have taken every excuse away from some one and I watched excuse after another excuse pop up. Because I personally took every excuse away, I was very comfortable with confronting the enslaved poverty legasy that was being passed on to the next generation.
Some people are mentally oing to be slaves until they die, but we have to work for those we don’t know are not.
I suppose the value is not in numbers, but quality and because someone cared enough to put up a number of dollars it reached me and the quality f my life and others I affect is o much better for it!
..shut the f’ up!!! See the ‘DON’ u wanna get Shi# DONE!
Raheem is right. They should work together to help their people (black children). I hope they can get it started, seek $50K from entertainers and us, and report who was asked and who donated. That would be very beneficial to the black community–more so than voting in this election. Unlike meat, this beef can be healthy
dumb freaks talk without facts!
lupe does alot for society!
u eva heard of lupefiasco foundation?
he is nt all talk
The first comment by raheem hit the nail on the head. This 50k would be nothing more than a tax write off for both of them. There is no storage of rich Negros giving money to charity as a tax shelter and publicity. As a matter of fact that seems to be all rich blacks are willing to do. They seem to give the bulk of their money to whites. Rich Negros love to talk about charity for blacks but invest and partner with whites to create jobs and economic opportunities for them or people in other countries.
I commend this rapper Lupe Fiasco who I never heard of before for advocating black people doing for ourselves. But I don’t know of any economist that would agree that charity has anything to do with solving double digit unemployment. Most of black peoples problem stem from high unemployment. I would like to see more of these wealthy multimillionaire entertainers and athletes invest in black businesses in inner cities. Many of these rich Negros make as much as some white own corporations but refuse to have anything to do with their race other than charity.
As far as not voting I don’t agree with but I understand the frustration of many who are advocating this. Neither political party gives a d**n about black people. Both republican AND democratic party see us as a punching bag to get the white vote. But I’m still going to the polls and voting for the lesser evil in 2012. Far too many black people died for us to have this right.
Black Americans have died to get the right to vote. Who one votes for is a personal choice. Not voting is an insult to our past and not voting is a wasted vote.
“How much will it take to buy you out of a system that originally bought you?”
This sums up pretty much how I feel about voting. But I fully realize we need people on both sides to affect change. People who work the republic system (voting, lobbyist, officials, etc) and people who affect direct change in a democratic system within the community in which they live. As long as it’s working toward a common good, I’m with it.
I don’t see much point in criticizing Lupe or DL. Do what you can and skip all the division. The problems we face as a nation, or even better, as a planet are much larger than this. This myopic bickering is super pointless.
I can agree with Lupe’s sentiment…electoral politics (as it has been shown) will not solve the problems of the black community. Our country is controlled by corporate interests primarily. I heard a recent figure that stated that the top 2000 political contributors gave more money than the bottom 100,000,000 (don’t quote me on the exact numbers). If we think that our votes mean more than their $$$, we’re fools. To reach a compromise, I think people who don’t want to vote (understandable, if none of the candidates truly appeal to you…you shouldn’t feel forced to vote for the lesser of two evils) SHOULD vote, but write in “None Of The Above” as their candidate. The day when NOTA wins a significant portion of votes, then maybe…maybe…politicians will take notice. Imagine if NOTA actually got the most votes!!! That would be revolutionary.
Wow, a p*****g contest…go figure.
Both should each put up 50k, STFU and take action.
I’m on nobody’s side this one.
Just put up or shut up.
I respect how Lupe,,and DL Hugley feels….and their beef is between them…When it comes to voting,,,I (choose) not too because I do not believe that it will make a difference who win’s,,,neither man will change black people’s condition; Change will only come from black people when they unite and do for self as The Hon. Elijah Muhammad taught us,(pbuh).. However voting is the right of every person in America so I would never tell the people not to use their right as a citizen..Someone above wrote that when voting to choose the one you trust the most. I don’t trust either one, nor will I choose one of two evils. They are of the same mind state and have the same design/plot for the American people; World Domination and control over all civil liberties. In my opinion and observation,,,neither one has said anything about helping the poor, but helping the middle class and up…. Mark my words,,,World War 3 is on the Horizon regardless of who wins the election,,,and when that happens,,,every man and woman will go for self….the goverment is already pointing its middle finger at us if your paying close attention. If voting makes you feel good at the end of the day,,,then do what works for you. I’m not against it,,,but I nor any other free souls have to follow you in your decision. With freedom came a price,,,and the fight was for the RIGHT to choose. Peace
Michelle 4X, If you think that this election will not change anything, you have a rude awakening! It is not down to your level of trust. Surely, you have been READING and WATCHING enough to come to a reasonable conclusion that this is about more than President Obama winning.
In all of this besides the economy, more powerful, is the culture war that is going on. How can you as a black, you are black aren’t you, not notice that this time it is strictly about whites obsession with losing white privileges? Their white privileges deny you your rights to the pursuit of happiness…
They want their country back, back from who, you ask, they want their country back from black you. That’s just the way they perceive what is happening. I don’t understand how some blacks see it, I clearly don’t understand it other than self-hate. Some of us hate to see a black man in this position. I know it’s a fact because I personally know a few that hated him before he was elected, so it wasn’t his policies. They hate him because he is black like them! Ain’t that crazy?
Now, the geopolitics is important too. But, nothing trumps the black being stopped from advancing in the white man’s eye. It is their duty as much as it is some of our duty, it seems , to help them keep blacks down.
Vote Obama/Biden 2012
I respect how Lupe,,and DL Hugley feels….and their beef is between them…When it comes to voting,,,I (choose) not too because I do not believe that it will make a difference who win’s,,,neither man will change black people’s condition; Change will only come from black people when they unite and do for self as The Hon. The problem here is that Lupe can’t get out of his own way. It really shouldn’t be either or. It should be vote and put up. By the way I will be looking to see Lupe put up the 50g( and what he accomplishes with it ). Good luck with that. Ain’t nothing new under the sun.
A Question?
Did Lupe’s foundation stop 28 people from being killed in chicago last month?
Did Barack Obama’s foundation stop 28 people from being killed in Chicago?
Did Derrick Rose’s foundation stop 28 people from being killed in Chicago?
Did Ophra Windfrey’s Foundation stop 28 people from being killed in Chicago? the answer is NO! why because no amount of money form any celeb, athlete, politician, or government agency can fix the problems of killing in our community. Throwing money at problems never fixed anything. All the money in the world wont stop “Bobo” from pulling out a gun and killing the first person who ,wears the wrong color, disses his girl, steps on his new Labrons or stares at him too long. So if these 2 idiots want to fight about who has the longest..bankaccount..let them…Vote for soultions to our problems or… dont vote
Hughley is the one who falls flat! When you have a message for someone you meet them where they are so there are no misunderstandings. He talked@ Lupe instead of to him. He too, is a part of the problem. D.L is so busy playing the c**n for White folks that he doesnt realize that we stop laughing with a long time ago. Now, we are laughing @ him! If he knows the power Lupe possess in the young community he should’ve sat down with him.
***VOTE** ***DO BOTH*** ***$50K***
OUR SITU IS A MULTI-FACETED PROBLEM … VOTING IS ONE FACET/EFFECTIVE USE OF CAPITAL IN OUR COMMUNITIES IS ANOTHER … HOWEVER, IF **YOU** THINK THAT **ENTERTAINERS/ATHLETES/TV PERSONALITIES/ETC** ARE THE ONLY ONES WHO HAVE THE RESPONSIBILITY TO MAKE A CONTRIBUTION YOU GREATLY MISS THE AFRICAN CONCEPT OF COMMUNITY
Sad for anyone to challenge another to put up money.Fact, voting is your right not a priviledge,to many of our people marched, fought, were lynched, burned, beaten, hosed down, bitten by dogs were murdered so we could have our right to vote and you are encouraging young man men not to vote.I don’t care how much money you pour into any community, thats not how you get the job done.Another thing, lets live in communities and drop the labels, people died to eliminate labels also.I am so tired of DL and other celebs making jokes about the projects, and screaming about geting out of them, project what?Everyone is not going to leave the so called innercity,so why can’t we concentrate on cleaning it up ,showing people how to beautify it and make it a place to be proudof, after all(ITS NOT WHERE YOU LIVE,BUT HOW YOU LIVE)PEOPLE,REGISTER,VOTE,AND STOP THIS FOOLISHNESS.
Thank you so much earnestine fletcher!
LET YOUR VOICES BE HEARD THROUGH YOUR VOTE!!!!!!
Money talk and bullsh** walk.
I’ll hold the money LOL.
,Money is not the answer to every problem that we are having with the crime in the streets of chicago or any other city.A lot of our problems start in the home with us,we need to take control of our children,be parents to them and stop trying to be their friend,I know no matter what some parents do some young people are going to find the street life exciting, but we have to find a way to help them all.Don’t go for that mess its a sign of the times, its a sign that some of these people that america’s youth are so willing to follow need to be mindful of the things they do and say.Ihave grown sons, some grandkids, but sometimes i listen to Lil Wayne,Drake,Niki,Tyga,Future.2 Chainz,Kanye, and their lyrics make me blush sometimes, and their expensive clothing that shows so much of their behinds till it looks like they are wearing a bunch of rags.It won’t hurt to pull the pants up just a little bit and clean up the lyrics a little and show a little more respect for each other. We are better people than this!!!!!! Don’t stop the music just give it a lil makeover,ok.VOTE!!!!!!
I can see both points to some degree and while I’m no fan of either of them, I lean more to D.L.’s side because voting does not mean anyone’s waiting for anyone to help them. We pay the same taxes or more than others who get far more benefit from it than we do so we should demand more. We can still do as much as possible for ourselves but too many of our forefathers fought and died to get the right to vote for us to just not vote. If we vote we might not achieve what we hope for, but if we don’t vote we definitely won’t. That would make us part of the problem rather than part of the solution.
Lupe Fiasco has thought out his position.
“In my fight against terrorism, to me, the biggest terrorist is Obama, and the United States of America. I’m trying to fight the terrorism that’s actually causing the other forms of terrorism. You know, the root cause of terrorism is the stuff that the U.S. government allows to happen, and the foreign policies that we have in place in different countries that inspire people to become terrorists.” — Lupe Fiasco
The events in Benghazi last week validate Lupe’s points. Why would he vote for someone he considers to be a terrorist? Furthermore he is following a historical precedent set by the esteemed scholar, Dr. W.E.B. Du Bois.
“In 1956, I shall not go to the polls. I have not registered. I believe that democracy has so far disappeared in the United States that no “two evils” exist. There is but one evil party with two names.
Is the refusal to vote in this phony election a counsel of despair? No, it is dogged hope. It is hope that if twenty-five million voters refrain from voting in 1956, , this might make the American people ask how much longer this dumb farce can proceed without even a whimper of protest.
I will be no party to it and that will make little difference. You will take large part and bravely march to the polls, and that also will make no difference. Drop the chains, then, that bind our brains. Drive the money-changers from the seats of the Cabinet and the halls of Congress.”
I agree with Dr. Du Bois and Lupe Fiasco. Mrs. Fannie Lou Hamer did not get beaten in the Winona jail, and Mrs. Viola Liuzzo did not get killed on Highway 80 in Alabama for me to choose between injustice (one who drops bombs on babies) and immorality (one who would crop bombs on babies) in this presidential election.
I understand that Lupe as an artist does have an influence on young black men, but why criticize that man for critically thinking for himself and making his own decision. Weather his opinion on voting is right or wrong, it is true people gave their lives for the right to vote. But lets take a step back and observe what is going on today. There are MANY OTHER ARTIST that have an EVEN GREATER influence that may not necessarily dis voting, but promote over consumerism, boastfully degrade woman, perpetuate hate towards brothers that look just like themselves, and fabricate felonies and murders all while melodically catching the attention of your children’s ears. WHY NOT say ANYTHING to those artist? They almost get praised. Though Lupe who actually uses his words wisely is getting talked down upon because his stance on voting. I think we need to take a stand on ALL ISSUES, not just voting. We take voting seriously because blood WAS shed to receive our rights, but lets not be blind to the blood shed of the young black boys TODAY. Boys who look up to entertainers who don’t want to take the responsibility to lead. Due to the prison industrial complex and of course population growth there are more black men in jail today then there were in slavery. I wouldn’t be surprised if we tallied up the deaths of young black men in recent years there might actually be more casualties compared to the losses we suffered in the civil rights movement. There is been over 500 reported deaths this year, just in Chicago alone and we still have 3 whole months til’ the years end. MY POINT is if we see this going on today why be silent about entertainers that promote so much negativity and get outraged when artist are anti politics? As a young man in college I fall victim to a lot of what I just commented on, I’m not criticizing, just observing and analyzing. I hope one day we can all get from under our laptops stop commenting and stand together and ACT. I hope to see you all soon
To paraphrase the Bible, those who have much, much is required.
Much love to Lupe. However I cannot go alone with any African who is engaging in SELF-VOTER SUPPRESSION.
The odd thing about this yakking about President Obama ‘don’t care about us’ is totally amazing. It’s like those of us who are talking that nonsense have been asleep for the past 4 years. What’s up with that. I clearly understand the oppression of blacks, but we still should be able to think. If its anything we have, we have TVs. Surely, we’re ran across some discussions of President Obama’s accomplishments that effected us. Surely, we saw Clinton at the Convention spell it out, he was not just making a speech. The speech was about President Obama’s accomplishments. The bills he’s signed are all over the internet. Read and understand what’s happening here and on other sites.
We let a few white infiltrators come on this site and stir us up–which takes very little to do–and it’s like we have lost our minds.
If we have been paying attention-we should know of these things he’s done that directly helps black people. With the understanding that no one person can turn the years of disfranchisement and oppression in 4 years. With 246 years of slavery and 147 years of naked oppression, who could clean that up in 4 years–God?
So, we need to get over that he will never be able to treat all of the maladies in the black communities. I believe that our MEN are going to have to get together and do that. I know the job will take a hurcurlean effort but, there it is. Black women as always will assist the men in this effort. Money is not all we need -first we need to unite and respect each other’s humanity.
Before someone complaint about the grammar and commas. I can’t go back and correct. Sometimes my Apple goes all over the place. Most of all it won’t let me go back in these little boxes. Any one that knows how to make it stop that, post the solution. Thank you!
Lupe Fiasco is not alone:
http://www.yourblackworld.net/2012/09/uncategorized/black-clergy-leadership-discourages-black-voters-not-to-vote-on-election-day/
It’s absolutely useless to proceed when half of these idiots are protesting and don’t know who Lupe Fiasco is and the other half haven’t a clue as to exactly what he said. SMDH
If any African American, would actually follow the advice of some illiterate a*s rapper, and not vote, after some of our people have fought, and died for this right, and their economic lives depends on who wins, then they deserves to be relegated to the bottom of the s**t pile. First, these filthy rappers changed our name from African American, to n****r, after all the years, and efforts that we fought, and died for respect, and now they don’t want us to vote, after years of struggling for this right. They sound more like the KKK, than the KKK themselves. This is hustling backward, not forward, and the only people that are getting rich, are the rappers, and the Jews. You would have to be brain dead to even consider entertaining such a foolish idea, or action. This Lupe idiot, needs to be put in prison, a mental hospital, or thrown out of this country.

This is funny. DL Hughley coons at every turn, and now he has the nerve to criticize a rapper whose overall message is just the opposite. Boy, these past four years have sure unearthed a slew of lifetime apolitical Blacks who think that they’re politically astute just because they voted for a half-Black president.
let them start a charity with 100k seed money. I’ll go with that.
Why couldn’t we do both..why does it have to be one or the other…why couldn’t we pump money into the community while at the same time vote?
Lupe makes a valid point but his execution is ALL WRONG. We need to vote we need our voices to be heard. Black men are “camped out” on the lowest rung of society. Lupe is right that we have the power to change it for ourselves and that is our greatest redeeming quality. But his methodology is for use to be even more invisible than we already are. That is not the answer. WHEN YOU GENTLEMEN PUT TOGETHER YOUR FUNDS, I HAVE THE PROGRAM THAT IS LEAPS AND BOUNDS ABOVE ANYTHING ELSE OUT THERE. GET AT ME!!! RRILEY03@BAKER.EDU
Lupe is another Tupac representing the REAL. He’s on point about not voting. Voting will get us no where its just tokens like integration. We have to begin to think for ourselves, do for ourselves as Marcus Garvey, Malcolm X, and so many other African Revolutionaries have taught us to do. When will see see that the => Politricks <== will NEVER get us free.
These Democrats/Republicans are the same coin just opposite sides playing their ROLE, ACTING to keep us divided and creating the imagery needed to make us believe that one politrician is better than the other. Yet, African/Black people are being duped, bamboozled once again into insanity believing that voting will get us Self Determination, Freedom, Equality, Justice…. We have enough resources, we spend over 300,000 billion dollars as CONSUMERS yearly we can build our own nation within a nation. Yet, we still want to depend on our oppressors. Lupe keep banging on those foes.
It would seem that for us, self-determination (‘inner-directed’) would be preferable to being ‘other-directed.’
Marcus Garvey at least tried very hard to unite us. He said, “Our union must know no clime, boundary, or nationality…let us hold together under all climes and in every country.” The best-known organizations that spawned from his teachings were movements of Black self-determination: 1.) the Nation of Islam, 2.) the Shrines of the Black Madonna, and the Rastafari Movement. The parents of the Honorable Elijah Muhammed (Nation of Islam) and The Honorable Jaramogi Abebe Agyeman (Shrine of the Black Madonna) both attended Garvey meetings with these leaders, then children, in tow. The effect remains – are we not still working toward improvement for our people? Remember the Last Poets? They said, “Free your mind, and your a*s will follow.” The Nation and Shrine both work(ed) to free our minds.
I suggest that whatever affects our lives is pretty important. Clearly, religion and politics affect our lives. They are, in fact, pervasive in our lives, whether we vote or not. I further suggest that what affects our lives – at the most fundamental levels, that is – is worth our involvement, our influence. Lupe and DL have incited a dialogue, for sure! “To vote, or not to vote – that is the question.” Or is it? Well, consider this: how was life for us BEFORE we could vote? If we were better off, then voting seems a moot point. If we were worse off, then perhaps there is value in casting our ballot. After all, the U.S. ballot allows us to choose METHODS of governance, not personhood. Daddy Bush ran Baby Bush, Baby Bush was ‘selected,’ not elected, and Brother/Uncle Bush (gangster Prescott) set the tone. Clinton was the last prez to offer up a balanced budget.
These things matter; our electoral process matters, but it was never designed to empower Black people. And so you know, I lived in Detroit when George Romney was Governor, and he actually worked to remove housing barriers for us, resulting in many, many of us purchasing a home for the first time EVER. It seems he was influenced by his Mexican-born hippie parents. Still, I wouldn’t be caught voting for his son Mitt, who was raised in one of the very Detroit suburbs that his father had attempted to desegregate. As I read these comments, I see that we KNOW we ought pursue self-empowerment. So let’s talk about how to do THAT! Is the DL vs Lupe argument going to put fathers back in the homes? (And by the way, removing fathers from the home? That was a trick of the Kerner Commission in the 60s – gotta know your history and not blame the victim.) And Blacks not working together? Propaganda.
We are the most beautiful, most intelligent beings EVER created. We accomplished things other peoples STILL can’t figure out…the Great Pyramids. Mummification. World travel before the days of conventional transportation.
Slavery took from us what defines ‘a people’ – our land, our language, and our culture. We now express in a culture of powerlessness. This is what must change. Tupac’s mom got it; there’s a reason she named her son ‘Tupac.’
We can start by showing respect, especially when we disagree. We can help by brainstorming ideas that empower us, and supporting the idea that stands a chance, EVEN IF IT ISN’T OUR OWN. You know, it’s hard to throw off an ideology that has been reinforced for centuries and taught in every institution worldwide. That’s why I say ‘Don’t blame the victim.’ Wanna do something powerful? Let’s support one another. Think WE-ism, not ME-ism. THAT could be our miracle. We’d shock the world AND ourselves, and find ourselves – wellwhaddayaknow – moved right on up there at the top.
My 1895-born grandmother spanked us ONLY when we fought amongst each other. She said, “Fighting should come from WITHOUT the family, not from WITHIN.” And she meant it! My sister was kicking my b**t one day, and Grandma came outside to whack ME. That was because I started the fight.
Let US not fight from within. If we came together, well, THAT would be like Jesus coming back – a miracle. And that would be just fine, because we are a people of miracles. We are the best. The first. The strongest (brothers). The most beautiful, especially in our natural state (sisters-who-make Asia-rich). The most intelligent.
So let’s BE that. Vote or not, Dem or Repub, light or dark, straight or kinky. Let’s BE that, and make our communities rock with our involvement and improvement. And the next time somebody knocks us, set them straight, even if you don’t yet believe in us. Eventually, you will. And they’ll stop. (After all, that ‘Black inferiority’ concept started out as a lie, and yet so many have come to believe it.) Let’s truly be a Nation within a nation. A hundred years from now, they’ll still be marveling at what we did in these times. h**l, maybe even a thousand years from now.
Just so you know, I vote. And no offense, but I’m voting for the mulatto.
Can we be honest here? Lupe Fiasco has no idea how ignorant he sounds in this situation. What black person in their right mind, in 2012, would go from interview to interview saying that voting doesn’t matter? Only a politically uneducated person would say something so stupid. Forget about slavery, Jim crow, civil rights, etc…Forget all that for a minute. Let’s just deal with president Obama! President Obama has an undeniable track record of actually doing things that we can actually check. No more of this B.S “Voting doesn’t count” baby talk. Lilly Ledbetter act, Obamacare, Killing the # 1 terrorist in the world in his first term, dismantling their organization, ending the war in Iraq, Don’t ask don’t tell, supporting gay marriage, Saving the auto industry, regulating the banks, wall street and the credit card companies…come on bro!!! Look at this Superstorm Sandy! We can no longer afford for black people to walk around stupid and uneducated about the facts….Not when they have a million followers! I wrote an entire blog about this at http://www.thepeoplesmic.blogspot.com please check it out if you get a chance. I have at least two blogs on
Lupe alone.
