It’s Not Just America: Right Wing Racists Seize Political Power in Greece
The Wall Street Journal reports:
Greece’s anti-bailout leftist Syriza party would win if elections were held today, while ultranationalists Golden Dawn would become the third-largest party in parliament, a poll showed Friday.
According to a survey prepared by VPRC polling agency and published in Ellada Avrio newspaper, the opposition Syriza party would garner 30% of the vote, while conservatives New Democracy–who lead the coalition government–got 28% of the support.
The ultranationalist political group rails against claims that it’s racist, but the group is far right ring, its attacks have landed mainly on immigrants, and the group has adopted a n**i style logo.
If Golden Dawn sounds familiar, that’s because in July, Kulture Kritic reported that Greek triple jumper and Golden Dawn supporter Voula Papachristou had been kicked off her country’s Olympic team for sending racist tweets:
Papachristou’s Twitter name, @papaxristoutj, is filled with retweets and promotions of Golden Dawn, an extreme right wing party that emerged in the Greek Parliament in the national elections.
But it wasn’t her support for Golden Dawn that got her expelled from the Olympic team. It was her joke about the reported appearance of Nile-virus-carrying mosquitoes in Athens, Papachristou wrote: “With so many Africans in Greece, the West Nile mosquitoes will be getting home food!!!”. Her tweet prompted thousands of negative reactions on Twitter and elsewhere.
When times get tough, people don’t look for solutions, they look for scapegoats, and in far too many countries, the scapegoats are overwhelming black or brown or poor or all of the above.
