Rapper Tweets about Driving Drunk, then Dies a Few Minutes Later
by Dr. Boyce Watkins
A rapper who thought that it was fun to brag on Twitter about drinking and driving died shortly after sending his last tweet. The tweet by the rapper “Inkyy” was YOLO, which means “You only live once.” It appears that his sudden death confirms his expectation…he’s only going to live and die one time.
The California rapper hit a wall in Ontario, Canada, killing all passengers in the car. Inkyy, whose real name is Ervin McKinness, was just 21 years old when the incident took place. I would expect that he had promising career, since most brothers in California aren’t driving around Canada in the middle of the night.
The tweet was sent at 1:19 am EST on September 2 and stated “Drunk af going 120 drifting corners #F***It. YOLO.”
His last tweet was “Driving tweeting sipping the cup f*** yolo I’m turning it up.”
You can’t put all of this on Inkyy, since police say that another rapper may have been driving the car. The group ran a red light and hit a wall. Four of the passengers died at the scene of the accident and a fifth died at the hospital.
This incident reminds me of the lyrics of a song by an incredibly talented artist by the name of TI. In the song “24s,” TI says this:
“In a drop top chevy with the roof wide open my partners looking at me to see if my eyes open cause I’ve been drankin, and I’ve been smokin and flying down 285 but I’m focused”
The translation of the lyrics is that he’s bragging about getting behind the wheel while being high and drunk. This is yet another example of how commercialized hip-hop culture teaches black men how to kill one another. Fueled by billions of dollars in corporate money, destructive artists are given international platforms that promote a lifestyle of violence, drug/alcohol abuse, s****l irresponsibility and ignorance. Then, we sit back and wonder why black men are more likely to die than anyone else, especially at the hands of another black man.
Anyone who somehow looks the other way as this culture continues to destroy our young men is simply delusional. The recent murder of the rapper Lil Jojo in Chicago, right after making a music video where nearly every teenager had an assault weapon, shows what commercialized hip hop music is doing to the black community. I remain a huge fan of hip hop, but the sh*t that continues to be spit out by major corporations like Interscope Records (who gave us Chief Keef) is something that most of us cannot respect or appreciate.
This young man did not have to die. But then again, Nicole Price’s 65-year old mother in Kansas City also didn’t have to die on her way to church when a young 21-year old got drunk, got behind the wheel and murdered her when speeding through a red light. Seven-year old Heaven Sutton didn’t have to die from the stray bullet that murdered her while she sold lemonade on her front porch. There are countless deaths that occur every year because a brother is “thuggin” like a n**i soldier following orders that have been pounded into his head by the violent music that he listens to and recites every single day of his life. You can’t hear lyrics like “Shoot the n*gga in the face” every day from the age of 6 and not expect it to have some kind of impact.
Destructive and irresponsible decisions like the ones mentioned above are effectively chickens coming home to roost, after we’ve spent 20 years feeding young black men a steady diet of psychological poison. As a result, you are almost as likely to see a 21-year old with sagging pants and a blunt in his mouth as you are to see that man in a suit on his way to work. Of course not every black male is sucked in by the poison, but too many of them are, and most of us must navigate through a world where other men are affected by these negative cultural influences. This is why so many positive and productive young people are murdered each year by other men who have nothing to lose. All of us are affected.
We must stop pretending that these musical influences are just harmless entertainment, because they are not. When a young person does something stupid, many of them were taught to behave that way. Any good psychologist would tell you that, when it comes to our psychological intake, you are what you eat. Unfortunately, our kids are being fed the Grim Reaper.

This article is full of false facts, the youngman who tweeted was not the one driving. I am relative to the actual one driving and this occurred in Ontario California, get you facts right before you publish this rubish and let the families heal as they are burying these 5 youngmen now, get a dam life.
@Kimberly….your right…the facts of this article are not accurate but the fact that the article had to printed is. Trust me I understand what you are going through and how you are feeling right now reading such things when you are directly involved and affected by others actions. But what those young people did was foolish and unfortunately cost them dearly. Nothing positive nor negative will bring any of them back. Instead of getting that upset about what a stranger who clearly does not have a degree in journalism is typing, be a VOICE. You obviously read blogs and are obviously a caring individual. Keep talking about your cousin and THE FACTS of what happen so that more people will be saved. I pray for peach for you and all of your family and strength for these young people parents/kids (if any) Be Blessed
….sorry…I pray for PEACE for you and your family.
No Kimberly, you get your facts straight… Intelligent Black Society does not need trash like inky and his friends polluting our community with their embarrassing buffoonery and deadly bad habits.
How do you advocate for punks who cause nothing but problems for our people??
Wow Kevin you are heartless!
You got a lot of dam nerve and don’t have the full accurate facts off the media heresay and some mess off the news.
Get your facts straight as way too many people confuse Ontario, CA with Canada. Ontario, CA is in CALIFORNIA just outside L.A. (which is Los Angeles and not Louisiana).
Extremely well said. We must not forget our young Black women whom are adopting and mirroring this same destructive behavioral pattern.
What difference does it make where the heck is was, some young people are dead and it is happening everyday. It has to stop Black People. Get mad at the cause of the problem not the messenger. Stop doing what people want you to do making our people extinct. Stop killing eachother, learn to love yourselves and eachother.
While the facts may not be correct as to whether these people were killed in California, or CANADA; the substance of the message here speaks truth. I totally agree with the writer. Our children ARE being fed the Grim Reaper. Our young men and women are being wrongly influenced by the trash dished out of rapper’s mouths in the name of Hip Hop and Rap. Live by the sword, you will surely die by the sword! We are loosing too many of our black young men and women to violence spoken of in these lyrics. It needs to stop!
I agree, but to get enough of our people to protest these acts is like trying to pull teeth!! We endorse it with our silence. I had a petition on my fb page asking the record industry to discontinue the the promoting of theses acts, out of over 2 thousand fb friends, less then 200 would click to sign it!! This was over a 90 day period!! I just don’t understand the lack of concern our people display!!
Who really cares where this happened? It’s the message that is most important. I agree with Dee — get mad at the cause of the problem, not the messenger.
It’s probably best for you to take down this article “Dr.” since NOTHING in here is factual based. I’d suggest next time that you DO YOUR RESEARCH before you attempt to judge someone especially during this hard time for our community. That being the community for Ontario, CALIFORNIA. I went to high school with some of these boys and NONE of them were doing anything that other young people do on a Saturday night. So SHUT UP! It’s people like you that keep our community down; the black community has a horrible habit of bashing and bringing the worst situations to light for everyone to see. I WILL Pray for you because you, Dr. Boyce Watkins are among the MANY who need it.
This punks deserved to die and I’m glad they did… Mainly because they won’t be around to kill innocent people via their stupid actions.
The Dr. Is not condemning these young people. He’s simply saying that this particular culture breeds this type of behavior & it has to stop. Malea confirms this by stating that they weren’t doing anything that other young people do on the weekends.
I feel sympathy for young black women in search of a young black man. They are becoming an endangered species.
I totally agree. I have a 20 year-old daughter in college and I have known for years that the prospects of her finding a suitable black man who is on the same kind of productive path in life that she is on are doubtful. There are too many of our young men who are in prison, or out of prison and caught up in the probation system, or who are just unfit for relationships with women because of various reasons, one of them being their terrible attitude. I do not want my daughter to be hooked up with some thuggish, gangbanger type because she deserves men who are far better than that.
@Kimberly….your right…the facts of this article are not accurate but the fact that the article had to printed is. These young men are a lost cause. Back in the day when they wore their pants with just the top of their draws showing, I thought it was pitiful. Now they actually wear their pants below their b**t cheeks and think they’re cool. Some of them are walking around like “Fred Sanford” trying to keep their pants from falling down. I guess that’ll be the next trend…wearing their pants down around their ankles. LOL. And any young lady that goes for these types must be more pathetic than them.
just like snoop dogg crusin down the street smoking indo sippin on gin and juice laid back with his mind on his money terrible
What’s pathetic is that people are focusing more on suppose inaccuracies of the article. The point he’s making is that self destructive behavior and murder are the number one killers for black males. When we as a people become as equally outraged over that perhaps we can come up with a solution to all this needless deaths of black men.
Amen David.
Here we go with that YOLO stuff! Oh, well. Keep in mind, YODO, too! (smh) They were fully aware that they were under the influence and took the risk. Not only that, they put other people at risk. I’m just glad that they only killed themselves and not someone elses loved ones.
Thanks Dr. Boyce for this article, I see this type of life style played out in our prisons, I watch and see young men all chained togather ankle and wrist hair twist, dredlocks sagging pants body covered as well as some faces with tatts symbolizing the Hip-Hop culture which have destroyed the moral in our communities thru out America, don’t shout me down people for I have labored in the system for over thirty years and if you don’t think this hurt my heart to see this played out in our communities, if black america would spent more time to rescue our youth from this deadly lifestyle as they are worshipping the President things would be much better for us all.
God Speed! You Big Black Dummies!!! You make us all look like a***s! Tired of these type Negroes nothing but a Walking Abortion!
A CrackBaby from the 80′s Lawdd help us!
All I can say is this is very sad.I am praying for the families and hopefully something can be learned from this tragedy.Life is just to short.
My prayers go out to all the familys involved. Now lets stop blaming rappers, the music and society.Truth be told,
at least 70-80 percent of us drove or rode with someone doing the same thing for whatever reason. But we made the choice to do it and luckly didn’t die. This is such a sad situation because we’re losing the next generation. We have to keep trying to school them like the older brothers and sisters tried with us.Can’t give up and keep Praying.
you pay for being stupid
Wow! Amazing how someone can argue on semantics with Dr Boyce when it is a fact that deaths resulted due to………..What about not drinking at all or how about this one. Not getting in the car with a driver who is drinking too, or better yet, is it not said birds of a feather flock together! Apparently it did not matter perhaps which one was driving if in fact they were all under the influence. This sounds like the one where, my son did not rob the bank, he just drove the get away car, but was not involved in the murder of the teller-plaaaaaa-ease!
how sad that this young man thought the only way to have fun was drinking and driving drunk.he not only destroyed his life but the innocent people who died with him and the families who will live with the pain for years to come.at 21 he just became drinking age and now he is gone .drinking and driving is a recipe for disaster.god bless the families.
Folks, it is time to get real! With all the c**p that white people have done to us since bringing us here, we have decided to pick up the torch and kill ourselves! I am guessing that I am older than most of you on this blog. I have seen a whole lot growing up in the 60′s and 70′s in the south. I never thought I would say this but what we’re doing and are allowing to be done to our people by our own people is much worse than white people could EVER do to us! Who do you all think is killing all the black children in my home cityof Chicago? Desensitized BLACK MALES!
I know we want to deny it but hip hop primotes a thug mentality and thug lifestyle; is incredibly destructive. We cannot rely on the young black parents of these the young black boys because the parents of listening to the s**t too! A huge percentage of black people promote and defend whatever is negative. Too how many of us think it is cool to be referred to as a killa, a playa or pimp. I helped break up a fight between two 17 or 18 year old boys on my block the other day. I asked them what they were fighting about. One boy attacked the other 1 because he had been spreading rumors that he (the attacker) had never actually been to jail! The kid actually became enraged because his claims of having been to jail several times had been disproven! ARE YOU F**KING KIDDKNG ME?
Let’s stop the defending all this negative behavior in the black culture.
And, no 1 seems to care; not the president, not anyone!
That is incredible. When people have gotten to the point where something as negative as going to jail is supposed to give a person status or credibility then we have a problem that is almost beyond fixing. I remember back in the 1980′s when someone I knew back then claimed that he “didn’t mind going to jail”, which I thought was utterly stupid. We now have a second or third generation of people like that to deal with. Frankly, I don’t see how this problem will get solved without a massive effort by EVERYONE to turn it around, and I don’t see that happening anytime soon, if ever.
I sympathize with the family of anybody who suffered a tragic death. People especially young people make mistakes …too bad this time it cost them their lives. The main point here people whether you are black or white or any race is DON’T DRINK AND DRIVE. Most have done it and are lucky to be alive by the Grace of God. We need to rebuild the black community because there are positives as well as negatives everywhere you look. All races have fatalities in their communities and hip hop music is not the only thing that keeps people driving drunk and high. Let’s be real folks. When we begin to look at the reasons and try to change why people are depressed in our communities and deal with why people drink and use drugs mostly due to lack of employment opportunities, not graduating from college because people can’t afford to go, teen pregnancy, watching too much TV, poverty, racism and injustices throughout society then we can begin to work on solutions in our communities and not point fingers at each other and divide ourselves up into classes. Please stop the crabs in the basket mentality. BE APART OF THE SOLUTION…WE KNOW THE PROBLEMS…look out your window and ask yourself what are you doing personally to help in your community besides talk?
Here it is time and time again. A devil/deamon comes dressed in money and surrounded by “ho(r)ney” BEings. Little black boys and girls are hypnotized! The greatest business on planet Earth is SOUL selling, and has been since WE came here. The experience is supposed to be that we work for GOD, yet so many, too many, end(ed) up slaving for the world.
Still, there are no victims. We are ALL accountable for our BEings at the end of our experience. AND I must tell you GOD will show up! It may seem he isn’t paying attention to the going-ons down here, it may be that you will what you KNOW in your heart is wrong, under the notion that “you only live once”; but you’re wrong and you know it.
It isn’t your life to abuse, confuse, refuse and delude yourSelf from the instruction of the almighty GOD! The lord is upset! You who can’t see beyond the veil, KNOW that you reap what you sow and harvest is soon upon us!
Wipe the world out your eyes, and wakeup! The coming of the Lord is at hand! If you haven’t saved yourSelves, DO IT RIGHT NOW! My dear brother isn’t coming to SAVE anyone, he and his army of Heaven are coming to rescue his brothers and sisters in Christ. BE STILL! He’s attempting to reach you, give him your time!
You CAN have the righteous life you desire!
But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.

So sad the 5 people are dead because they lacked education on DRUGS & ALCOHOL! I hope GOD has pity on their souls! I hope the families are able to learn from this tragic situation. No one is promised tomorrow! Use ur time wisely and stay humble!
My prayers go out to the families in this matter. You know it’s sad that people are still looking at thing in black and white. The world is going to go around regardless. We as people have to learn that you can’t blame everything on the color of ones skin.People of all color do things that they shouldn’t do.It’s not our place to judge anyone for their actions. The US is broke, people are homeless, hungry, and suffering. Wake up people. It’s not about color.
Kevin I hope that you are one of a kind. You shouldn’t be glad about anyone losing there life.Your comment makes you sound like the definition of a n****r!
You all just missed his whole point, that the article was making.
Stop the killings of each other!!!!! Does it really matter rather it’s Canada or California? They’re still dead! And because of what? Tupac said it best, “I’m seeing it clearing, hating the picture in the mirror, they claim we inferior, so why the f#$% these devils fear us? I’m watching my nation die, genocides the cause, expect a bloodbath, the aftermath is y’alls, I told ya last album we need help cause we dying, give us a chance, help us advance cause we trying, ignored my whole plea, watching us in disgust, then they beg when my gun bust, they don’t give a f#$% about us! Cause when I choose to ride, thugging to the day I die, nobody gives a f@#* about us, but when I start to rise the evil in their childrens eyes, now they give a f#$% about us!!!!!
Wake the h**l up black america! They kill us every time we try, cause they don’t give a f#$% about us!!!!!
So all of the young brothers locked up are there because of commercialized hip-hop? What about the ones who were there before a steady stream of commercialized hip hop? What about all of the ones there because of the so-called ‘War on Drugs’? This is an unfortunate event and I have sympathy for the families, but this kind of sensationalized hyperbolic academic rhetoric with a twist of ‘street’ designed to embarass and demonize some artists and put others on blast, that includes half-truths and inaccuracies does not inform or educate at all. Ain’t nobody learning lessons from reading this article… Sad…
The issue is not whether facts like the location of Canada and who was driving are correct (Dr Boyd does say that someone else was driving). The issue is they were drving drunk and should have known better. We can be thankful that they did not kill an innocent bystander. These sort of actions are fuelled by Hip-Hop, among other things, which glorify this type of behavior. It’s not right and has to stop. We all know the difference between right and wrong and yes it’s time we broke the silence. We need to speak up against what we all know is wrong and stop glorifying it.
To all who castigate the writer of this article, think again. I read a lot of articles on a lot of blogs and most of them moderate the comments to publish only the ones that make them look good. Not so on this site. All comments are posted as is. No editing. Kudos to the blogger and the hosts of this site who truly allow real freedom of speech. Condolences to all the families affected by this tragic event. May others learn from the mistakes that precipitated the occurrence. Black folks, love one another. Stop the anger. Let love be without hypocrisy. Seek peace and pursue it. Train a child in the way that he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it. Let’s have a sober reflection on what just happened. May the Lord be merciful to us all.
Wow! It’s a shame, and a tragedy that young lives were lost due to foolishness, but it’s also just as bad that some people feel that it’s justified to bash the deceased. No matter how dumb it was to drive drunk, ( and by NO MEANS AM I EXCUSING THAT BEHAVIOUR) just keep in mind that in GODS EYES, WE ALL FALL SHORT OF GLORY, and at some point and time, we have ALL done something that could justify our lord to s****h THE LIVING BREATH OUT OF US RIGHT WHERE WE STAND! Please check yourselves on the ignorant SELF-RIGHTEOUS rhetoric, and let’s turn a bad into good, by sending the PROPER message out. People die from alcohol related accidents every day, and drunk drivers come from ALL RACES, CREEDS, AND BACKGROUNDS!!!!
The main fact is that the young me are dead. They made poor choices and it cost them their lives. It is sad for young people to die.
Do not drink or text and drive. Do not get into a car with someone who was drinking.
These boys weren’t in their right frame of mind. No amount of logic would have stopped them from meeting their doom. But then, maybe they were the type that lived dangerously. It’s a very sad state of affairs and I only wIsh that someone in the group could have stood up and demanded not to drive while drinking that fateful night. May God have mercy on their souls.
I hear you, nut they make choices. It’s not that they dontknow better, but they choose to follw the corporate dime. They would rather rap or whatever you call it, than read a book. So I Fu-t them let them do what they want. Unfartunatly some innocent people end up dying because of the animals. I am at the crossroads where I see young black men choosing to become fools. I am not going to spend my time being concerh over them when they are not concern about themselves.
As black people or race we been dealt a bad hand, but we can work our way out of it. We can read and learn who did what to us, and figure out how to get out of the situation. But many of us wont, we wallow in self pity, and complain rather than read. So we can know our enemy, and even when we know who our enemy is, that is who we still run to them to find solution to our problems. Why go to the people whose ancestors made our life a living h**l for generation, after generation.
We read the good book the bible, as we are told, it tells us to love our enemy, and that is what we do best is love our enemy the whit man who wrote, and then we go and kill each other. Because the enemy stand in our way, and we choose to kill our brothers because we cannot get pass the enemy.Question what you read, and ask yourself why does theis book tells me to love my enemy, while he is doing wrong to me.Wake up black people we are the only fool following the book. While our enemy continue to poison the atmosphare and provide the weapon to kill us,a nd we do it without asking why. When we kill each other, they send us to prison, and we work for them as SLAVES until we die. There are books out there beside the bible, that we can read and learn from, such as the Egyptain book of the dead, that Moses, lifted the ten commandement from. Yes, I know that you never heard about it, neither did I for many years. But I heard about it by accident, and I found it and read it, you should do the same.Read so you will know who you are. Not every body who said they love you really do. There was a time when we had to buckle down to our enemy, but you can get away from under their spell, just by reading. I HAVE, and call my own shots.
