Tyra Banks Called Misleading for Bragging about Graduating from Harvard Business School

Some of us have been led to believe that Tyra Banks graduated from the Harvard Business School. The fact is that this isn’t true. Getting a certificate for a nine-week course in a non-degree extension program is very different from going through the grit and grind of a four year college degree or even an MBA.

Tyra has never deceived you directly on the matter, for she has always been clear that she has a “diploma” from Harvard, not a degree. But what she actually has is a “Certificate of Completion” for one course in the university’s Owner/President Management program, which kind of teaches you how to do what you’re already doing every day anyway.

The program is not like the standard MBA program, which takes two years to finish, with the students working on their course work full-time over several courses per semester. These degrees, according to many business school faculty, are more like executive programs, with this one costing $100,000 for the student to finish. Some argue that these programs are designed as revenue-generating machines for business schools to effectively sell an affiliation to students who have the money but not the time.
A report on Jezebel went hard on Banks, stating that she has a “habit of making misleading public statements about her studies.”
Back in February, Tyra tweeted a picture of herself getting her degree with these words: “On stage at my Harvard Business School graduation!”

She went on to say: “On stage at my Harvard Business School graduation! Lil blurry but SUCH an exciting moment 4 me & wanted 2 share w/u!”

In another statement that has scholars shaking their heads, Banks tweeted this: “Smiling ear2ear on the Harvard Business School campus w/my diploma!”

Tyra’s business success is legendary, but it seems that she could give Vice Presidential candidate Paul Ryan a run for his money when it comes to saying things that could be potentially misleading. We are proud of her achievements regardless, but we don’t believe she’s a real Harvard alum.

Enroll for a term-even dropout the next– and your are an alum of that school! The senior leadership of my university attends summer programs to enhance their skills( continuing education) and list that in the university catalog as a institution of an EARNED DEGREE. Got an honorary Doctorate degree, guess what your new title means? ‘Doctor(Dr.) ________ and whatever your last name is! She is an Alumnae of HAAArvard University . . .period!

Actually you are wrong. While technically the definition of an alumnus “can” include a drop-out, the common and accepted usage refers to someone who actually GRADUATED with a degree from an institution.

Alumni associations want $$ and get around that by naming alumni groups as “Former Students.” See for example UT’s “Texas Exes.”

But universities don’t play around with how they confer degrees – it would risk accreditation. So they are EXPLICIT in how they differentiate between certificates, diplomas and degrees.

Those who receive Honorary degrees are supposed to list them as such on their resumes and CVs. So the misleading is not by the instititions . . . its the recipients.

    So WHAT?

Ok, so she got a certification from Harvard Business School, so who’s got their panties in a bunch over this?

She’s a very successful former model.

Made a lot of money from the ANTM franchise that went GLOBAL!

She’s a force to be reckoned with when it comes to business, so Harvard was happy to have her attend whether it was for a certification, degree, or whatever.

    Stop hating and get yours.

There we go again CRABS IN A BARREL, we can never let our own bask in anything positive and enjoy the moment without “putting them in their place” she said DIPLOMA so she was not misleading anyone. If I paid $100,000.00 for a course I would brag, boast shout from the rooftops when I got my DIPLOMA or DEGREE she still had to study to achieve a passing grade. We celebrate kids graduating from kindergarten why cant she celebrate a $100 k diploma????

Erica, there is a difference betweet a Diploma and a Certificate Of Completion. And there`s an even greater difference between an MBA Degree and a Diploma or Certificate…….In Tyra`s case, she paid for a name rather than for an accredited degree. Let`s be real here. LarryJ, BA, MPA.

So what, Mr. want-to-toot-your-own-horn — over NOTHING demonstrated by adding your degrees — of which MANY PEOPLE HAVE ACQUIRED. You sound unworthy of the intellect it would take to earn your degrees — and a little petty and jaded too. If Tyra refers to her acquisition as a “diploma” which is legally offered by that institution, she is well within her rights and is entitled to feel pleased with her own achievement. If you want to put anyone down, then do it to the institution who conferred such a program — even if they too are within their own rights to do so. Yet I personally see no need to discredit anyone. None of that advances you. Crabs in a barrel is something many of us truly aspire to avoid becoming. Please crawl out of yours on your own and stop pulling others down. Dr. King always referred to the man who tries to keep someone down in a ditch has to always get down their and stay there with him.

Shut up you ignorant pigs. The comment from “Hoosierdoc” was right on the money. Tyra has a certificate, that’s it. She did not do the REAL grind to get a degree. ANYBODY can get a certificate!!!! Even my cat can get a certificate! Plus, anyone who would pay $100,000.00 to get a lousy certificate is a real dummy.
Harvard took Tyra for a fool and got paid!!

Edward, yes, Tyra is a very rich Black in birth only woman. but she loves her Whitemen. Than again, what can a poor Blackman offer her….? Though Tyra has money, money does not define character nor integrity. JFK Jr., had a law degree from NYU, was he a good lawyer…….JFK Jr. also had a pilots license yet he was unable to tell if he was going up or down during his last flight….Shaq has a Phd. But what is he a Doctor of…really. Money can buy a law degree, a Phd, a pilot`s license, a woman, a man, a slave,a child, drugs, a face or body change, etc,. Money can buy just about many thing except eternal life….Than again, that maybe someday possible….

I can only say: The force to be recognized is “God”. Secondly, I would not be so proud to say I attended or graduated from Harvard University. This college has a history of using slaves to help build it, and they used slaves as collateral to buid. Education is good, however not when it is from a higher education learning university that treated your forefathers and mothers like animals.

WE BUILT THE BLACK HOUSE, THE PYRAMIDS, THE STONEHENGE, THE WHOLE d**n WORLD, BUT NEVER GET CREDIT FOR IT!!!

These lazy, greedy, caucasoid bastards could not work hard; therefore, they used FREE LABOR, which consisted of FREE SLAVE LABOR!!!

And, they have the nerve to claim we are lazy! I always tell them to shut up, and PAY UP!!! These yankees OWE US REPARATIONS NOW!

Bullshit….it is NOT an example of crabs in a barrel. Tyra simply purposely tried to mislead folks. This has nothing to do with race or the fact that she is powerful or rich; she lied. Please stop ibid ting race into everthing; that takes away from and dilutes the actual instances of racism.

She neither lied nor misled if that is the type of certification that the school offers. She has a right to be happy about her own achievements and should be free to say so just as any other person would. We should be proud she has the money and desire to improve herself to any extent such as we would or should be for any other African-American individual who has the impetus to take any course work to advance him or herself. Sometimes it is so sad to see our people always trying to discredit one another. What a way to be a Black Family. Something indeed is missing. We need to do better for ourselves.

    He who deceives achieves?

Here’s truth. A black mother earns 4 year degree. She applies for job after job after job after job….no luck. Could it be that on the phone she fit (with her “white” dialect) but in person , it’s like, O my! You’re black! Or could it be her name is Ebony? Or could it be she dared interviewed TOO good cause she did her research and EVEN a cover letter? Or should she have lie about where she saw herself in 5 yrs…maybe she should’ve said as a slave still and not a supervisory position…after all they DID offer growth! Or just maybe there’s a “don’t hire these people anywhere list” until they COOPERATE with the standards ofOUR world. Let’s not discuss the ticking student loan .

So, says the rich deceiver, : Let their a***s roast on welfare, even though we know GOD’s wrath will handle us personally for messin with HIS children. But for now, f-em! (Now can you pass me a napkin, I’m no even hungry with all this food in front of me……no NOT the actually napkin….the stack of 100 dollar bills…a napkin(rolling eyes) ….what do I look like….a welfare chick?

Those low wage earning home health aide sisters wearing their Sunday best big hats and seeking salvation because they do not have a man……d**n. The Black church is the best business in The Hood and its tax free…….Anyone for a $ 7.00 church fried chicken dinner….?????

Thanks for the information, those who know the difference between a degree and a Dipolma appreciate the clarification. Information does that, it informs of some representation. The information seems to have clarified a misrepresentation.
Nearly every community college, college, and university has an Extension Program that offers course from Basket weaving to understanding Zoology, and the cost start about $15. Just remember having a certificate from a Driving school does not qualify you to race in the Indy 500.
Always give props to those that have achieved financial success, but, acknowledging a perpetration of academic success, is neither elitist or even crabbing. It called clarifying the truth.
Finally, Ms. Banks can date whom she please, she is still successful, she just knowly overstating her background, for whatever gains she chose. Thank you for spreading the truth RUTH.

Your comment still doesn’t explain why jealous, hating btches like you feel the need to crucify someone for their hard-earned achievements.

Exactly how does it lessen what all she’s done?

As a matter of fact, WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO EVEN THINK LESS OF HER?

She got a certification from Harvard? So? With all that she’s accomplished, what gives you or anybody else jealous of her the right to think she’s less than? Again, get some business of your own.

Okaaaay…but if Tyra clearly stated that she received a “diploma”, what is the misleading part? Are you saying that she can’t rep Harvard because she didn’t receive a degree from there? If she received any type of degree or diploma or certificate from Harvard, then yes, she is considered a Harvard graduate. Just like people who go to trade school. They get certificates or diplomas and are considered graduates. A graduate is someone who completes a course of study or a particular class in exchange for documentation proving their completion, i.e. degree, diploma, certificate. But yeah, if she’s saying she got a diploma, what’s the misleading part?

Lenny, Tyra DID NOT GRADUATE from Harvard. The proper wording is ” received” a certificate from Harvard. Let’s say that if you get a certificate from a church for being baptised. Does this mean you GRADUATED from the church? NO dummy, it does not! If you sold the most candy for the pastor’s aid fundraiser, does this mean you GRADUATED from the pastor’s aid committee? Tyra DID NOT GRADUATE from Harvard. She merely earned (or really PAID for) a certificate!! I wish you dumb a*s people would go to college and GRADUATE with a DEGREE so you wouldn’t embarrass yourselves on these dam blogs.
