Man Who Had His Face Eaten Off by Cannibal Interviewed For the First Time, Recalls Cannibal’s Last Words to Him
Approximately two months after Ronald Poppo was attacked on the MacArthur Causeway by Rudy Eugene, he is finally describing what happened to
him.
Poppo told CBS Miami, “He attacked me”, speaking about Rudy Eugene. “He just ripped me to ribbons. He chewed up my face. He plucked out my eyes. Basically that’s all there is to say about it.”
Poppo, who was left blind by the attack, says he still doesn’t understand why Eugene attacked him.
“For a very short amount of time I thought he was a good guy,” Poppo said. “But he just went and turned berserk. He apparently didn’t have a good day at the Beach and he – he was coming back. And I guess he took it out, took it out on me or something. I don’t know.”
When asked what Eugene was saying while he was mauling him, Poppo remembered Eugene’s threats.
“’You, me, buddy, and nobody else here,’” Poppo recalled. “’I’m gonna — gonna kill you.’ Or something like that, I guess.”
It was suspected at the time that cannibal Rudy Eugene had bath salts in his system, but a toxicology report later revealed that he only had marijuana in his system.
“The department’s toxicology laboratory has identified the active components of marijuana,” the medical examiner said in a statement. ”The laboratory has tested for but not detected any other street drugs, alcohol or prescription drugs…This includes cocaine, LSD, amphetamines (Extasy, Meth and others), phencyclidine (PCP or Angel Dust), heroin, oxycodone, Xanax, synthetic marijuana (Spice), and many other similar compounds.”
So we still do not know exactly what triggered Eugene’s assault on Ronald Poppo.
