Man Charged with Attempted Murder, Says He “Only Shot a N*gger”
It always seems to be happening in Florida these days, doesn’t it? A man in Port St. Joe has been arrested and charged with a hate crime after shooting a black man. In his words, “He only shot a n*gger,” so what’s the big deal?
Walton Henry Butler has been taken into custody for the shooting of Everett Gant, a black man. Butler shot Gant with a rifle in the crime. The shooting occurred after the man made a series of racial slurs toward the victim and the children of a woman, Pamela Rogers.
Butler shot Gant between the eyes after Gant went to his apartment to confront him over what he’d said. That’s when Butler shot him and left him on the ground to die, closing the door behind him. Butler then called 911 and finished dinner.
Gulf County Sheriff Joe Nugent said that Butler was annoyed by the arrest, stating that “he had only shot a n*gger.”
“He was brought to the investigation unit where he was interviewed and basically admitted to shooting the victim and said he shot a, used a racial slur, and said that is what he shot and acted like it was not like a big deal or anything to him,” Nugent told WJHG.
Butler is likely going to prison for a while for what he did. He has been charged with attempted murder and a hate crime. Gant is expected to survive, but not without significant injury as a result of the attack.

Whatever people within a culture, organization, or community use as reference to one another is acceptable because of established social mores within that unit. What people unaffiliated with those groups needs to understand is that you aren’t a part of that group and it doesn’t need to be explained. Many blacks recoil at the thought of being called a lil girl, n***a, n****r, b***h, or whatever because of the word’s history and what it means to other cultures. However, there are many who have embraced it and don’t feel offended when it is used amongst their own. Why is that so hard to understand. Nicknames are the same thing. I know people who only allow close friends and family to call them nicknames and will fight you if you aren’t among that group; and they are white, asian, hispanic, black, etc. Stop being angry that you can’t use the term and be respectful.
I used to think like you, even up to about a year ago. I wised up. Truth: being called that word by someone Black doesn’t upset me in the sense that I’m not offended. Let a white person call me that and I’m whoopin somebody’s azz. But the fact remains that people who use a DEROGATORY term in reference to themselves have self esteem issues, self worth issues. It’s hard to demand respect from others when we don’t respect ourselves. I have been a habitual user of the N word my whole life and it’s not been easy removing it from my personal vocabulary. Every now and again I slip up and use it (especially when someone is getting on my nerves) but I’m trying. And I too, am also trying to wean myself off froom using this highly insulting term to describe another black person First of all, what is a n****r? No one has aply defined the word for me yet. I actually do not understand the use of the word in that it represents humans who behave a certain way. I do not behave that way so I can not be characterized as such. Simply because a woman already has a mate does not mean that I can call her a “B.” I know so little about her that I can not characterize her as anything but a wonderful human being. For lack of a better source, the “N” word is defined in the dictionary. When I last looked it did suggest a profile of character, not color or hair texture. This issue of characterization must end. There is no place in a civil society for it.

“Well stated!!!!” It is comforting to note that there are other black people such as I that are thoroughly disgusted by these negating behaviors. For what purpose does it serve? Unfortunately, there are many variables that have lead to this “disease” in many black communities, e.g. the over-whelming LACK of black fathers in the home and/or LACK of black male role models. My opinion only, but when the s****l revolution of the late 60′s and 1970′s ran abound, our black people saw a proliferation in four areas: Oops! kids, increase in welfare, surgence of “single, black mothers,” and the numbers stock-piled in the ghettos of urban Amerikka. Many do not value the sanctity of marriage any longer. I could go on, but until many of our black people rid themselves of their apathetic behaviors, I really do not see much progression for our people.

Olantunji Mwamba! I don’t know which country on the African Continent (sarah paiin) you are from but I more than applaud and agree with you! As a Black American who visited West Africa; Accra, Ghana in 2009 and was inducted into one of the tribes up country in the Volta Region and Easr Africa; Nairobi, Kenya! These were the most insightful, enlightening and educational experiences I have ever had thus far in my life! I volunteer exclusively with the African Community here and it is a very rewarding and exhilirating experience! I strongly urge all of us from this country especially the Black to reach out anf get to know and help our African Sisters and Brothers get acclimated and teaching them the system and survival in this country! Learn their customs, languages/dialects and hopefully get to visit their country as we will be all the better for it! Like all humans they are not perfect but for the most part they and especially the children are very honest, respectable, intelligent and ambitious to name but a few! We will all gain from this regardless of our race! At present it seems non-blacks are doing more for them than Blacks especially when it comes to you so-called christians! Personally I refer to most of you as hippachristians and this is with all races but Blacks are the most blatant! PROVE ME WRONG THEN!

I agree with you Eric. The mis-education of our people has gone a long way in disenfranchising us on several levels (voting & familial/community interactions to name a few). Furthermore, we then adopt behaviors that are not conducive to allowing for a broadening of our horizons (drugs, old wives tales, misnomers, not leaving the ‘hood, etc). Until WE decide that we want better they we will continue to be fed crumbs and we’ll be satisfied with that by thinking “we’re getting over” on the man when in actuality he is enslaving not only your body but your mind as well!

The issue of the silliness of using a euphemism such as “N-word” instead of “N-i-g-g-e-r” is not there is any any real relief for those aggrieved not by the word but by the manifestation of actions of linked to the definition of the word. What I am saying is that we relieve the racists of wieght of historical and contemporary oppression, subjugation, and discrimination that underlies the word. When we insist on using that silly and juvenile euphemism, “the N word” what we are saying is that we fear the word itself and the racist and racism get a pass since they don’t have to confront the full freight of their ideology. We should use the word “N-i-g-g-e-r” in the context with which it belongs and continue to accuse the racist by the sound and fury inherent in that word of it’s full wieght of history. What we ought not to accept is that the word “N-i-g-g-e-r” is ever acceptable as a term of endearment in any of it’s forms or derivations. What we ought not to accept is that there are forms of cultural communication and entertainment that accept the use of the word “N-i-g-g-e-r” as anything other that what is meant. And that meaning is for racist to define or describe a member of that ethnic group of people who they whold in contempt and as being no more than or even less than an animal and less than human, as a being not worthy of any human consideration, as a contemptable, sub-human entity.

People should live their lives and protect themselves from anyone who does not respect their livlihood. What good does worrying about what someone calls you have to do with how you live your life? Sticks and stones hurt your bones, words never should is an old saying but it makes sense.
We are too busy dictating to others on how to live their lives and what they should and should not say. Why is it called allegedly when he admitted that he shot him. The bigot shot him, so he needs the electric chair or bread and water for the rest of his days (for those who do not believe in the death penalty).

The argument about the use of the “n word”, “n-i-g-g-e-r”, “n-i-g-g-a” and such is irrelevant in this particular situation. What is important is how the life of African Americans is devalued among media outlets and in the criminal “injustice” system. It is truly saddening that this has not be addressed nor even implied. The fact that this individual has already admitted the crime that he has committed and shrugged it off as it has been shrugged for centuries in regards to the life of Black people. This is and what has made racism, bigotry and slavery within this country “feel right” to the white people who said “all men are created equal” and then proceeded to create the “three-fifths” amendment which, if you aren’t familiar with historical and mathematical accuracy, means that Black life was and to some extent is considered 60% as valuable than other life.
What needs to be done are measures taken so that justice can be given to Black people as a whole in terms of murder and/or attempted murder or crimes in general because the message that the punishment sends is that if you are to offend, victimize and/or marginalize Black people in any way, you do not receive as harsh a punishment as you would anyone else. This needs to change.
A panel of scientists should conduct a study on Walton Henry Butler which should include a study of the parts of his brain while he is incarcerated. No rehabilitation here.

This is a travesty that is bigger than words. We can go back into the old tired n***a/n****r semantic argument, complete with a historical examination of the effect of the word, as well as the incorporation of epithets into the lexicons of other outgroup minorities in this country, or we can look at what I think is the real tragedy. The problem I have here is the fact that this mouth-breathing, inbred-looking, walmart-conservative, a*s hole actually believes that the color of his skin somehow makes him and his situation BETTER than I am, simply because he isn’t Black. Further it’s the expectation of impunity that is far more problematic than the usage of the word itself. I have no problem with anybody using racial epithets–Black, Caucasian, or other–just as long as ther is no law in place barring me from expressing my disdain for their usage in the legal manner of my choosing. The internalized usage of nigg(a/er) in our community is what I’d call ‘home business.’ Yeah things may need some addressing at home, but we shouldn’t be cosigning being disrespected in the streets, just because we have an issue or two at home.

Any terms or phrases, the N-word (in reference to “terms of endearment”) etc., that was used by whites to denigrate blacks is unacceptable under any circumstances. I haven’t used that degrading word privately and publicly in over 30 yrs, simply because I choose not to. After extensive reading of books and literatures (including research) concerning the history of African-Americans throughout the centuries, I was just blown away of why certain groups of black people won’t engage their mindset in reading and learning of our struggles and survivals (including accomplishments too) that may help us in our awareness; and having the propensity of positive knowledge to guide us through this schaden freude, prejudicious society. Otherwise, we’ll be “grasping straws to keep from drowing” in ignorance.
There is NO proper context in which to use the “N” word, and if you think there is, then you are lacking self-respect and you are truly ignorant. The word was, is and always will be used as a derogatory term, whether whites, blacks or Asians use it. What happened to the term “brother” to refer to our people. I have said many times before we are as racist as everyone else, it’s the nature of man to believe he is better than another man. I’ve been to different countries, China, Japan, Brazil, Egypt, Italy, Spain, Nigeria, Mexico and others, racist are everywhere, Chinese dislike white people with a passion, that does not stop them from working with them and taking in massive amounts of dollars, Brazil has more blacks than America and have some of the same problems but mostly different, in Nigeria they don’t hate whites but talk about them and make jokes.
