Landlord Puts Up “Whites Only” Sign on Pool, Says Black Girl’s Hair Clouds the Water
Michael Gunn has filed a lawsuit after experiencing something he says should have ended a long time ago. Gunn said that his landlord’s pool had a “Whites Only” sign that he claims was directed at his daughter.
Gunn testified before the Ohio Civil Rights Commission in Cincinnati about the incident and the sign that he saw. The hearing was to determine if there should be penalties placed on landlords who engage in this kind of hurtful activity toward residents.
The commission found that landlord, Jamie Hein, did discriminate against Gunn’s daughter. The landlord claimed that the 10-year old girl’s hair products tainted the water in the pool. The commission ruled that Hein violated the Ohio Civil Rights Act when he posted the sign.
Gunn says that his daughter lives with her mother but comes to visit with him regularly. After she went swimming, the landlord sent him a text message telling him that his daughter’s hair was clouding the pool and that she would have to take a shower before getting in and wear a swim cap. The next day, he saw a sign that said “Public Swimming Pool, White Only.”
Gunn is white, but his daughter is African American. The issue hit him to his core.
“It’s something you’re supposed to see in history books,” Gunn said. “It’s not something you’re supposed to see posted at the building where you live.”

I am so appalled and hurt to see all the racial hatred that are coming to light. This is so sad. I saw a movie last night. ‘The Liberation of L.B. Jones’ that really angered me because the only liberation for this productive, businessman whose wife was committing adultery with a Caucasian cop, was death at the hands of the same cop. The law would not grant a divorce in such a case.
The problem I have is that is Gunn was Black, and have the racial discrimination claim, the Ohio Civil Rights Division would have dismissed his claimed…
When Black’s file lawsuits, the EEOC dismisses them, but when white file discrimination lawsuits, the EEOC rule in their favor…

Plus, u don’t know who it was that made the ruling to begin with, so u cant speak on what u TRULY DON’T know. Our race will NEVER get right or ahead if everyone just keeps ASSuming. The White man should have given the child a shower B4 she went to the pool! I don’t think putting up the sign was necessary! That child’s hair product should not be a problem when there is chemicals in the pool that should be strong enough to kill that germ. What the landlord should be worried about is dirt & other germs that can be brought in his pool without first showering!!!! Either by WHITES or ANYONE ELSE!m
You’re right, the pool should have enough chemical to kill not only hair product but also dirt on the body… its a public pool with dozens of ppl entering… it wasn’t that little girl who entered that body of water and made it cloudy it was several bodies. HOWEVER, my point in even replying is that she probably had showered, to white people the term shower automatically includes/interchangeably means washing hair. A coworker of mine saw my curly hair and asked if I showered… I felt insulted after such a question but further questioning led me to see that she was asking about whether I had achieved my hairstyle through washing my hair.
The climate in This Country is very disturbing, and has become even more so since Racial fringe right groups have begun to sprout like weeds…..If people don’t wake up and realize come this November, You will see things only your grandparents experienced daily when they were young in These United States… This country is becoming A Racial Embarrassment for all the World to see.
The comment about taking a shower before entering the pool is not the issue here. Most public pools do require that one showers prior to entering the pool however the issue is that the landlord put up a sign saying Whites Only. Women period use a lot of hair products and if the truth be told, white women’s hair shed more frequently than black women’s and clogs up the drains. If the issue was hair tainting the water then everyone should wear a swim cap.

I like to know where the place is because if I find a live to live and if it is that place, I wouldn’t offer myself to live there. Shame on the landlord. Anything can cloud up the pool. The landlord’s mind is small as a d**n pea.

EEOC did me the same way..they dismissed my case because I said a white co worker spoke up for me after witnessing discrimination against me for a year..they don’t ask these questions because they want to know what happened..they ask because they are trying to find out a way to dismiss the case..some people are good because i don’t want ot swim with whites, eat with them, none of that s**t…this stuff is outta control

Swim caps are mandatory for females in some public pools and for good reason. Hair clogging up drains and hair products contaminating pools. People should shower before entering a pool but that won’t stop hair contamination if the person or persons involved do not wash their hair. Many don’t. However, the sign was mean and meant to hurt.

I have read each and every one of these posts and some sound very ignorant and others just don’t get it,This isn’t about the young ladies hair products its about racism, bigotry, and pure hate. As it was said our forefathers fought against this in the ’60′s and lost their lives so that we could have the “freedoms” that we deserve. This is showing me that we are taking one step forward and ten steps backward and if we do not address these issues soon we will be back in the civil rights era.

What do politicians mean when they say that they want less regulatio in business? Could less regulation mean dismantling racial exclusion laws such as the Ohio laws mentioned in this article? Shouldn’t a business be free to serve or not serve whomever it pleases?

Putting that sign up was wrong on many levels. To say that black women’s hair product is the “problem” is outrageous and the authorities need to step in to correct this situation.
