Dr. Boyce: Joe Biden’s Racial Remarks Need an Apology, Not More Excuses

by Dr. Boyce Watkins, KultureKritic.com

President Barack Obama is defending Vice President Joe Biden’s recent and most controversial remarks. In reference to Republican deregulation, Biden said that Republicans are seeking to “put ya’ll back in chains,” an obvious reference to slavery.  With an audience that has quite a few African Americans in it, those words can be interpreted in a number of interesting ways.  We know that most black people will gladly support their favorite Democrat, in many cases, not even looking at the policies.  But must we get the black vote by conveniently referencing the most traumatic experience in African American history?

President Obama stood firmly with his Democratic partner, explaining away Biden’s remarks (as he typically does).  The president says that Biden was simply trying to make his point about the importance of strong financial market regulation.

“In no sense was he trying to connote something other than that,” Obama said.

I was saddened that the president is unable and unwilling to see Biden’s statement for what it was:  A misguided and insensitive remark from an old white guy who doesn’t understand that slavery was very painful for our ancestors.  Slavery was our holocaust and is in no way comparable to the consequences we might experience with Republican deregulation.  When talking about the things that will get you back into office, you shouldn’t make comparisons with September 11th (which Biden would not) and you shouldn’t use analogies that reference slavery.  Some experiences in history should not be politicized for your own personal benefit, and President Obama knows it.

But perhaps the reason President Obama is hesitant to hold Biden accountable for his blatant racial disrespect is because he’s accepted the role as Biden’s in-house negro apologist. After all, Biden has referenced President Obama as “the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean.”  So, given that Barack is the first bright, clean and articulate black man he’s ever seen, that could explain why Biden’s boy in the White House gives him a pass, even when he slaps his heritage square in the face with a set of remarks he wouldn’t dare repeat to any other Democratic constituency.

You think I’m full of it?  Well, here’s a test for President Obama.  I would like for him to send Joe Biden to speak to a group of female s****l assault victims, and tell the women that by not properly regulating Wall Street, Republicans are going to “rape them all over again.”

After that, I’d like for him to speak to the Anti-Defamation League, which represents the Jewish community, and say “Republicans are going to put y’all back in concentration camps.”

In his next speech, Biden should go to a group of Hispanics and say, “They’re going to treat you like you’re an illegal alien who’s been detained while trying to cross the political border.”

Finally, he should send Biden to a group of gay constituents and let him say, “Republicans are going to bend you over and screw you with no Vaseline and beat you like the bullies did in high school.”

If Biden can go into those venues and make those remarks while still having the comments written off as harmless by our first black president, then I’ll be convinced that we might have some semblance of equality.  The fact is that there are times when an apology is called for and this is one of them.  By refusing to apologize for Biden’s remarks, the Obama Administration is effectively minimizing the relevance of African American sensitivities and telling black people that they should simply get over it.

There is no other way to interpret this hypocrisy, and those excusing every ounce of BS coming out of the Obama Administration are as ignorant as the housewife who refuses to watch videotaped evidence that her husband is sleeping with the neighbor.  Supporting Obama is one thing, but excusing every ignorant remark by Democrat leaders is another.  This paternalistic racism being thrust by the Democratic Party is no different from the way a pimp claims to love a prostitute.  A benevolent pimp might say, “because I care about you, I can call you a b*tch without apologizing and you have no right to be upset about it.  Don’t bite the hand that feeds you b*tch.”

Anything short of an apology proves the obvious: That the disrespect of black people doesn’t matter to Democrats and that a powerful white Democrat can say d**n near anything to us, knowing that no black politician in the White House is ever going to stand up to him.  If Biden were a black man making all of these irresponsible remarks, he’d be out on his b**t no matter how clean and articulate he might be.

Perhaps we aren’t being respected because we simply don’t demand it.   Joe Biden was wrong and he owes African Americans an apology.  If he were to say something similar to any other group of constituents, his hat would be in his hand and he’d be back-pedaling. Black people must learn to stop excusing ignorance and disrespect, even when it comes from our so-called friends.

Are you guys for real, give me a d**n break. I am a Black man and I did not find Vice President Biden’s comment to be offensive at all. You are taking his comment out of context for unneccesary reasons and you really need to tackle the bigger issues that are affecting the African American communities instead of turning a blind eye.

this is stupid, what are boyce, the republicans and the media are talking about. what! no one can say “unchain” in a mostly black audience. give me a break. don’t you stupid people know that this is the ploy of the republicans to draw attention away from romney’s not paying taxes and not showing his tax returns. how can anyone get upset over what biden said when the republicans have called this president all sorts of names and disrepected him as the leader of this country and as a man. they have called him a monkey, a n****r, a birther, a kenyan, an ape,, someone that don’t understand being an american, and an undercover muslin. they have pointed their fingers in his face, they have called him a liar and interrupted him doing a speech. now, you are concern because biden said “unchain yall”. who in the h**l made that a “black term” give me a break. what you should be concerning yourself with is: romney going into the white house with lies, tax evasions and hiding information from the american people. wesley snipes and others are in jail for tax evasions and romney gets a free pass for not filing taxes for years. he’s running for the highest office and he stands up and says “i’m not showing my taxes and don’t discuss it anymore.” reminds me of richard nixon (tricky d**k) wake up people these white folks are fooling you. stop worring about stupid stuff and focus black people on what would your state of being will be like if romney becomes president. he has those 5 sons, all are age 30, not one served this country, but he wants a war with iran. fool people think about as you age, medicare. you stupid worring about what biden said. How do you know he did not mean that for all the people in the room. wake up black people, they want you to focus on that instead of romney’s tax returns. I wished i had a voice, romney would not get away not showing his tax returns. this country will be in trouble if he is elected president. wake up people

It wasn’t the word “unchained” that was the issue. It was the followup line, where Biden suggested that Republicans wanted to “put ya’ll back in chains,” spoken with a deep-southern accent to top it off. (Let us not forget that most slave holders were democrats, and that the Republican Party was literally formed out of the abolition movement.) What Biden said was WAY over the line. WAY over the line. And Barack “clean negro” Obama is backing him up.

Yet, as I’ve said many times over, it doesn’t matter what Obama or Biden does; black people will vote for them.

You must understand something about Boyce Watkins. Several years ago, Mr. Watkins was someone for which I had the utmost respect. However, he is in the process of trying to re-create himself on an international level.

I suppose he is trying to become the Black Rush Limbaugh. His ratings as a professor from his students are terrible; so as for his stability as a professor is concerned, he probably sees the handwriting on the wall.

He takes every opportunity to criticize the President, and I’m not convinced that it’s because he actually believes what he says; but his negatively written opinion on President Obama causes controversy, and he’s been in the media long enough to know that controversy creates popularity.

Good or bad, he just wants the words “Boyce Watkins” on the lips of a large audience.
So the bottom line is that at this point in his life, he would rather have fame than favor with his readers and former supporters.

Maybe he will succeed at being the Black Rush Limbaugh of the day. If so, I’ll give him credit for reaching what seems to be his ultimate goal. Evidently, fame is much more important to him at this point than respect. Personally, I’d take the respect.

you are an idiot to compare Boyce with Rush- a racist piece of garbage with no intellect whatsoever. Boyce is an extremely intelligent man that cares about his race and every day goes to bat for them with no apologies. we need more people like him. especially in this age when white folk are daily mistreating and killing us. from your mouth to God’s ear: I hope Boyce does get a larger pulpit and goes international!!

If a Repub Congressman called Obama clean and articulate you’d be calling for his head. Biden was wrong both times. Obama should have never picked him. It amazes me how people that call Obama out on his c**p are marginalized by people like you.

Why should Janet Brewer follow federal law. Obama doesn’t. Besides, if you read the constitution, all things not reserved to the federal government are for the states to take care of. Obama actually has zero authoritiy to order the govenment of Arizona to do jack. Brewer wants to enforce immigration law (a thing that most readers on this board want); it is Obama and his house negro, Eric Holder, that are trying everything they can to stop her.

Bidens comments are the truth, listen to the tea partiers, they’re whole platform is that they’re going to take this country back, how far back? Just wait and see. They are interested in keeping the rich even richer and having the rest of us going to them begging for scraps. This article needs to be focused on why voter suppression laws have been enacted, and what we have at stake in this election if the republicans win the white house. Wake up, and focus on the issues. @ Wide Awake, I Love It! I heard the tea party talking about taking the country back, but I never thought about, how far back! I know they have said they wanted things to go back to the way they were in the 40′s and 50′s , but your statement makes me look at there statement a little differently. I also find it strange no one has mentioned that Paul Ryan is a tea party guy. I’m just sayin!

The Tea Party wanting to take the country back is in terms of the constitution, not in terms of a date on the calendar. I think you know that, but simply wish to take it out of context. The country has been slowly walking away from the constitution for about a century. These days, we seem to be running from it as fast as possible. (The recent Chick-fil-A controversy being a good example, where some government leaders — all democrates — decided to ban Chik-Fil-A from opening new locations because the owner dared to say something so radical as “marriage is between one man and one woman.”)

Barack Obama has literally decided to not follow several laws, one of them being enforcing immigration laws. The president must follow the law, just like the rest of us . . . at least that is what the constitution says. Another law he won’t follow is the Defense of Marriage Act, because Obama thinks that two men ought to be able to get married to each other. Obama issues executive orders telling the various enforcement divisions of the governemnt to not enforce the law. Border patrol can no longer arrest someone for being here illegally — the only peopel that can be deproted now are those who have committed certain types of felonies (document forgery/theft and tax fraud are OK according to Obama, but only if you are an illegal alien, if you are a citizen, you will go to prison for at least 5 years for doing that). When the Tea Party says the want to take this country back, they are meaning taking possession of the government away from people who don’t follow the constition. Sort of like you saying, the guy next door took my lawnmower, and now I’m going to take it back.

As you may have noticed all comments defended Biden regarding his remark which were BTW taken OUT of context. But it was not like he wasn’t speaking the truth! The GOP used the metaphor that Obama wished to “shackle the financial institutions” by fettering them with regulations, regulations and more regulations. Biden was playing off that metaphor by stipulating that the large financial institutions wished to “…shackle the populace” but said instead “put yall back in chains.” If you think most African Americans were offended by that remark, think again. He may have been speaking about de-regulation (which you conveniently follower along with mainstream GOPers take his speech out of context). But even if not taken out of context. Say if Biden meant put black people back in chains — you disagree with this statement? Wake up and smell the coffee. If you don’t see GOP policy (which by default has become the so-called tea party policy) as a sustained effort to disenfranchise African Americans, Hispanic immigrants, Muslims, elderly, the poor, women, gays, etc. — then, I don’t know what to advise to remedy your blindness because clearly, you have an agenda that I am not privy to, but it is certainly not self-interest. Locally, Republicans (along with Alec-crafted legislation) has attempted to take us back to post reconstruction South — denying the vote; denying a woman’s right to choose; promoting theocracy, etc. I could go on but why bother? As a person who is very much embittered and scarred by the institutional racism you endured, what gives? The tea party is driven by fear — loss of entitlement and majority status by whites who blindly support and are being manipulated to endorse and vote against their own self-interest. You are well educated and have experienced first hand the harm institutionalized racism can wreck on our society, yet you dare be offended because Joe Biden inadvertently hinted at a larger truth going on in this society? It boggles the mind.

Joe told the truth and every time you hear the word chain, it should not make you think of slavery. Joe never said anything about black slavery, h**l we will be in chains again if the repubs get back in. Chains of poverty and racism don’t always equal just African Americans, but all races. We are survivors ! Overcomers ! Can’t no devil stop us but we ourselves… You need to be discussing how they are blocking the vote in key states ! That is much more important and affects us more than what Joe said, which he told the truth ! I love Joe, he isn’t afraid to tell it like it is. Boyce, you fell into the Repubs camp with your view. Where are a great majority of our young men? Living under the government being given instructions on the basic everyday things in life (prison). Men make families. We need to toughen up and stop being wimps and pouting about everything and start working harder at rebuilding our race. Joe is decades late, we are already headed back to chains and the sad part is most of you don’t realize it.Look at how somebody jumped on that statement and are making it into a big issue. All you will do is screw the election for our only African American president who is going to continue to work for us as well as others. Please keep the racial issues to yourself until this election ends.. PLEASE. This is very important to me.

The middle class has been in chains for a long time but if left up to the Republicans we (middle class) will go back to living like we were in the 40′s & 50′s. Is that so hard to understand? Only those with the ability to read between the lines are capable of understanding what the Republicans have done to the people of this Country for the last 15 years. Prof. Watkins, you know exactly what he was saying but I guess it gives you something to write about…..

Personally I didn’t get offended but I agree with the article by Boyce Watkins. I was going to say no big deal but those were good examples of how differently blacks are treated compared to Hispanics, gays, women and whites by this administration. There is no way Joe Biden would have said something comparable to other groups. But nothing Joe Biden says surprises me. I recall Al Sharpton (who is nothing more than a cheerleader for president Obama now) being offended by Biden’s remark about the first black articulate, bright and clean black candidate statement.

Why should we get offended when someone speaks the truth and there is little ways to speak the truth other than “straight up”, but there are a lot of ways to water it down and polish up lies. Dr. Boyce I read your newsletters for constructive ways that we as a people can become educated on a lot that the news and other forms of media try and exploit or keep from us. I sincerely wish that you would focus on issues that we as a people would and should be able to become more knowledgeable of and cause us to become enlighten and rally together (i.e. mass incarceration, racial injustice in legal system, establishment of programs for children, etc). The GOP all of their blatant statements and it’s ok? And their statements do warrant an apology. So please don’t give me this apology mess. when the GOP can tell us that this economy is messed up due to 2 wars not paid for, Wall Street Bail outs, Millionaires tax breaks. All this done on the backs of seniors, sick, sick children.

Now they’re suppressing the votes for they do not want Obama to
have a second term which has been their agenda from the beginning. Why don’t they apologize for disrespecting Our President from the beginning. Why don’t people tell it like it is and stand behind our president, “THEY DO NOT WANT A BLACK MAN IN THE WHITE HOUSE!”

President Obama, Biden they do not have to apologize for anything! But they have what the GOP doesn’t have Respect for others’.

Only a fool (or a closet Teapublican) could take away from Biden’s remarks any reference to African captivity in the U.S. In fact, the only folks making that assertion are Teapublicans, media talking heads (whose primary purpose is to get people to view their show and YOU! Of all people Dr. Boyce you know the seriousness of what is going on or did you forget the Compromise Of 1877. For those of you who don’t know what that was about, the Southern Democrats conceded the Presidency to the Republican(then the party of choice for Blacks) on the condition they pull the Federal troops from the South and allow “State Rights”. Iit was that single act that placed Black folk back in “De-facto Slavery” another 80 years until the Civil Rights Movement. Now the “Tea Party” and the so-called “Conservatives” wish to reenact the same playbook. And that mindset my friend is what Mr. Biden was referencing.

Why is it that blacks feel that the Republicans are trying to put the entire race back into slavery when on the other hand the Democrats have enslaved poor black folks to believe that welfare is heaven. As we experience and see first hand young black girls having babies and babies having babies just so that they can get on welfare while the young black man does time in jail. Sometimes people need to get hit upside their heads in order to see the seriousness of the matter. I for one am not embarrassed about the enslavement of our people. Colonialism and slavery is a testament to our strengths as a people and unfortunately plenty of us would rather forget our past as if it never happened. Embrace our ancestors and all they struggled through including the triumphs and historical gains they left us with. Maybe if we experienced our Sankofa, we can regain our power to overcome our plight. Obama is not the issue here, the inability for us to unify behind any principles or ideology that moves us forward is our issue. Let’s concentrate and put our energies there first.

I’ll echo the sentiment of earlier posters. Biden’s comments were taken completely out of context. I’ll admit when I first heard the comment it sounded really bad. But after hearing the entire statement it is clear (at least to me) that Biden was referring to the middle class and working poor being at the mercy of Wall St. If Biden had made this statement at an NAACP, Urban League convention or HBCU perhaps I’d be inclined to state that such a comment was poorly conceived, but not racist.

Also we must take a look at certain realities with regard to the collective and individual financial health of the Black Community. Whatever financial distress most American face is greatly magnified for Black people. Being forced into financial slavery where we live to work instead of working to live (there is a difference people) is a very real possibility under Romney.

We have to be begged to vote. Our children are using our neighborhoods as the wild wild west. Our daughters are dropping babies by the boat load that their broke behinds can’t take care of. Our sons can’t get jobs because they can’t pass the p**s test. We are our own enemy. We add to our own demise. I work my behind off and everyday see some of us looking for a free ride. Laying up on the system that I work to and my hard earned money is used to support you with. I’m paying for mine to go to college and have never asked anyone for anything. In the last 90-days how many innocent children have been killed in our inner cities. They can’t go outside and play because folks don’t know how to act. Don’t tell me nothing about white people. I’m not talking about white people i’m talking about my people. @ Tina while your worrying about the Gays you should be worrying about whh Aids is killing our woman in large numbers. I totally agree that the immigration laws should have been lifted why ship the Hispanics out when everyone else can stay? They used them for cheap labor until it became against the law. If your two are not smart enough to see the directions the republicans are trying to take this country do away with Unions so they can reduce the cost of living. It’s only a little over seven dollars. They want to raise the retirement age to 72 so you can work yourself to death and they can keep the little social security money. While the rich pay no taxes, and your sharecrop for them and be homeless. President Obama don’t owe us anything. We owe ourselves to do better where we live.

“I wants to go to the Pros when I grow up” was an article that a professor read in class. I was among two blacks in that class, the other black person was asleep as the class laughed. I was offended, but that white female professor taught me a major less in that class that have been vital in work and so many other capacities. This article that you have written is below the mark of appealing, building awareness or educating your readers. My ancestors did have chains and was shackled as a result of slavery. I am not ashame of that because it is a part of our history and the story is that we had amazing ancestors in spite of the shackles. Slavery can come in the forms of shackling us economically. There is a high precentage of those within our communities unemployed, including me. Political decisions that are made can have a devastating impact and that is just the truth. Nelson Mandela oncle said, “We don’t air our dirty laundry in public.” So since you went there, let me hang some laundry. I support Obama and I like Biden. You mentioned in your article about Biden speaking to a group of s****l assault advocates. I chose to use the word advocates. Guess what, I have been a s****l assault advocate for many years. So, your point doesn’t hold water. I am Black, a s****l assault advocate and informed.

Once again Boyce has shown that he is a tool of the Republicans. I honestly do not get it as it makes no sense. President Obama is trying to improve the plight of the middle class. I often hear about Obama not helping the black community but didn’t he just get Obamacare passed? That signature piece of legislation will be ranked up there with Social Security as changing the face of America. This man is awesome as he is trying to lift all boats not just the rich boats. Doesn’t he get credit for that? Yes we need jobs but the other side decided that they would do whatever it took to see that he failed, Mitch McConnell said that that was their initial unflinching goal. Boyce you should be embarrassed! GObama!

I am one who enjoys politics…….I kinda agree with that point your taking which is kinda on the too far right side a little…but I also understand this …and this is why I really dont have a real problem what Joe Biden says…because if Romney does become President and he does what he says…..WE will be shackled economically and I believe racially as well with the policies…

That is why in a broader view I agree with what he is saying ….YOu don’t know what the White Republicans want to do with US Black folks…and they are so racially motivated against President OBAMA they may just want to put us back into chains litterally!!

Seriously, Slavery was a form to keep a certain class of people down economically (financially), mentally, spiritually so policies that favor the rich will keep the poor down which is a form of slavery. This comment “A misguided and insensitive remark from an old white guy who doesn’t understand that slavery was very painful for our ancestors. Slavery was our holocaust and is in no way comparable to the consequences we might experience with Republican deregulation. ” should be deleted from this story.

All of this hulabaloo over Biden’s remark is more of an indictment on the dumbing down of America and the deterioration of our educational system than anything else…to this OG…apparently, there is some difficulties in understanding “context” and “analogous”…House Speaker Biden made reference to “unshackling” Wall Street (shackles happen to be chains) and there was no controversy…everyone understood the “context” of the statement, yet, Biden used the word chains (which happen to be shackles) in the same context and further references to the results of unchaining or unshackling Wall Street as analogous to economically/financially “putting y’all (America’s middle class and working poor) “back in chains or shackling same…C’mon people…a D+ student in the 7th grade understands this…and this is controversial fodder in a presidential campaign? “We have found the enemy…it is us…”

Also, this executive order is a shameful sham because now all of these (mostly young kids under 30) will now be fingerprinted & mugged with great expectations but more easily found when and if the order expires. They’ll all probably suffer consequences eventually when they’re deported back to their countries of birth.

So, you’d rather have a White House full of LGBTs, pro-abortion advocates and other liberal demagogues with socialist/Marxist leanings? Well, I guess since that is what we are used to, four more years will not matter.

Just keep giving the Democrats and Your Highness, Obama a pass on disrespecting the black community, abject failure to address critical issues in the black community, creating and/or promoting an atmosphere of fluid sexuality, the dismantling of traditional marriage/values, the unabashed unleashing of LGBT ideology in our schools, workplaces and throughout our communities, coupled with the emerging anti-religious bigotry and see how we end up.

And, add to that unappetizing picture of the country, high unemployment and the diminished wealth in the black and larger communities and the overall racheting up of the national debt to almost 16 trillion dollars and, perhaps, you may get some inkling as to why some of us are “less than thrilled” with this president!!

Once again, if this man was a Republican or another Democratic president, many of us in the black community would be singing a different tune!! Yet, so many of us are content to support this man despite his horrendous failures and “questionable” religious values. Of course, we will leave our values at the door to be on the so-called “right side of history” and to keep those “darn racist, rich Republicans from getting back into the big house.”

And, many of you vociferously complain and brand Dr. Watkins as an “Uncle Tom” and traitor because he holds a different point of view on Obama and his presidency and is not timorous about avering his views, but expect him to tow the line and adopt your views as if only your views are the right views for all black people? How hypocritical is that?

If you don’t like this site or his views, simply unsubscribe and participate in sites that only present a pro-Obama stance. Believe me, just about the entire mainstream media is pro-Obama and anti-Romney or any other candidate who would even have the “audacity” to present a moderate or conservative point of view.

I don’t agree with everything Romney espouses and have not even decided to vote for him, but I am willing to research and listen to his plans for the country. Many of you have written ANYONE BUT A DEMOCRAT off and you wonder why we are the step-children or de facto bastards of the party!!

That is, because they know that they have to put forth very little effort to win us over and keep us on the “party’s plantation.” We have virtually no presence in the other party and, the few blacks who dare, have mucho confidence because they are scorned, denigrated and branded as traitorous to the black “party line” objectives.

Blacks are not monolithic and every single person in the black community has the right to hold an opinion or view on an issue. And, that opinion or view does not have to be validated or “sanitized” by any other black person!!!

If you support Obama and have managed to survive or even thrive under his policies, then good for you. By all means, support him in the upcoming election. But, that does not mean that others have fared so well and are enamored with him or his policies.

In this country, (at least for now) we have freedom of speech and the right to vote. These are much cherished freedoms and, even more so, in the black community.

Dr. Boyce Watkins continuously disseminates information that provides critical analysis of this administration without blind devotion. In my book, that represents strength, not weakness; that represents freedom, not fear; and that represents the height of critical thinking, intelligence and independence; not ignorance, racial “shackling” and blind allegiance to any man or political party.

Good luck with that waiting for Romney’s plan. Even a blind man can see that there is no plan. The Republicans major plan to put them in power was the “Nixon’s Southern Strategy” more than four decades ago. That still is their plan, and the teabaggers, other racists, and self-hating negroes are trying to keep him on task.

In all of those forty some years since Nixon Southern Strategy, some blacks surely do not possess an ounce of self-resect or self-preservation in them.
Any black person who has not truly assessed President
Obama’s record is being intellectully stupid. To cite a few bougus examples of his lack of helping blacks
without mentioning, the ‘Obama Care”, the millions he has sent to schools for teachers, repairs and building, stopping the hemorrhaging of theforeclosures, saving the auto industry, stopping the war in

benefits for the unemployed, his countless efforts to get

I don’t want another Negro to tell me about blacks not being monolithic. Indeed, they are not,but they should be. A people with the history of the Africans should be monolithic in all things political that effects black people. When it comes to black’s suvivial, we had better be as monolithic as the Jews. Read Tony Martin’s book, “The Jewish Onslaught” to get a clue about how monolithic they are to a fault. We could learn something from that monolithic, most wealthiest of all Americans. They can teach you unthinking blacks something about being monolithic and self preservation.

I think most of the comments were made by persons in chains, what should have been of no consequence at all has proved how narrowly focused we black people are.

All who fear and hate the republicans should have the exact same feelings towards the democrats, you seem to think the democrats will give you more stuff, they get the stuff = money, from the rich; share the wealth until we all have the same thing , right! Then what? What happens when there isn’t any more wealth? no rich people, no jobs, no food no nothing! Think it can’t happen?? Check out North Korea, who have shared the wealth of the nation, (except for the leaders) then compare it to South Korea who have tried to be like America use to be.

Frankly, I simply think the reason we dislike the republicans so much is because as a group we are afraid to step out on our own! The Republicans keep saying you can make it on your own, you don’t need the Government.

We’re afraid of a good education because that makes us look “white”.

We are afraid of owning a business because we might fail.

You might say to your self I want to be rich but having a 40K -$80k government job is safer.

Those rich people must be selling drugs or stealing to get that money.

Think if you were 120% of your annual income in dept. each year; and you already have promised to pay (owe, SS, Medicare, and other entitlements) more than 600% of your annual income.

What would be your solution to get out of debt. and maintain your current life style?

The democrats say lets keep doing what we are doing it will work out someway.

The republicans say some changes need to be made now or the whole republic will come crashing down.

Pain is coming in a big way either way, get the facts, not from Boyce, AL, or Jessie do you own research and decide.

Hate of one party or the other is not going to help at all or change things, if we don’t get it right you had better have some very real security options and a substantial food storage.

The two parties have not told you how serious the economy is, President Obama is just as much as fault as the rest of Washington, and remember the President is a politician 1st we all want him to do well, he does not however have black peoples back, he wants our vote but can not and will not do anything overtly for us just because he is black, so stop acting like he your man and will take care of you.

Think out of the box, get your own information, make real connections. Forget Biden and any thing he says, he is a nobody!
    Just truly keeping it real!

I disagree with Boyce Watkins interpretation of Joe Biden’s comments during a recent speech. Joe’s comment(s) should not be treated as a racist remark directed at Africans because he happen to be White and I believe Watkins know this is not the case. Rather, such statement should be viewed as a “wakeup” oppose to polarizing when so many Africans seem to be lax in a deep ceded position and not taking collected steps to preserve the gains created for them during the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s. I’m sorry to say, Watkins comments to Africans in the aftermath of Joe Biden’s speech is divisive, a bit distracting and resemble similar remarks by members of the Tea Party and other white supremacy groups. Africans in 2012 are faced with serious challenges such as education disparity, employment, voting suppression, jail incarceration, police brutality, police profiling-frisk
and searching and all he can talk about in his blogs is trivia matters that does nothing to address the problems Africans faces. Sadly, I once thought of Watkins as a pillar and fresh voice in the African community. I was naive to believe his blogs and skilled mind would offer real solutions that could lift Africans out of the pit holes. As of late, I see his remarks as a promotion of anarchy that tend to divide and cause dissension-sometimes bitterness. In plain words, I see him as the enemy to the African community. Negros like Boyce Watkins, Allen West and Michael Steel are reasons why African living in the USA should ignore.

You missed the whole message. It is very obvious that the Republicans are trying to put everyone who is not wealthy into a type of financial slavery. Unfortunately it seems that some Black people are so against Obama, they would rather see Romney/Ryan go into the presidency and the rest of the nations face all of the terrible consequences. I did realize that Obama would not be able to do everything he promised and then it became very clear that the Republicans were going to do everything in their power to keep him from accomplishing anything positive even if it means that the nations goes down in ruin. Wake up and think about what you are doing.

Why would Dr. Boyce or any other black person want to “come together” with someone like you who tarnishes them with that ubiquitous word? Why would anyone look to you for friendship and solidarity?

Are you any better than the white racists that you claim are bent on putting chains around blacks and women? It seems to me when it comes to chains, the biggest ones are the ones that shackle your mind and your spirit.

Please remember: to get respect, you must give respect; to be heard, you must listen; and to make a difference in the black community, you must love your brother/sister as you love yourself.

And, that may precisely be the problem. You still have a little ways to go to reach self-actualization.

I agree 199% with Boyce on this one. Biden’s remark was off base, off beat, extremely disrespectful & totally offensive! If the vp of the US had any inkling of compassion for the socioeconomic well being of Black people/African Amers. he wouldn’t have said what he said, it’s just that simple. The reality is, we as a people, are still in “chains” psychologically, emotionally and in some sense, physically (when you assess our #’s within the prison industrial complex), therefore the vp, in my opin, would have been more sensitive to the aspirations of another audience because I believe he would have exemplified some responsibility and did the homework, but when it comes down to Black folks, who cares? Really?? Heaven only knows what words, even well intentioned, will tumble from the VP’s lips. Even his boss probably wouldn’t bet on that.
” and you shouldn’t use analogies that reference slavery.  Some experiences in history should not be politicized for your own personal benefit, and President Obama knows it.” Have you already forgotten his annaugaration speech? It was full of references to slavery, for which I have no problem.

It’s just that the Republicans (Romney et al.) will do it a lot faster and without a prophylactic, because they want to preserve America’s domestic social order of White Privilege and a “White” country, and Democrats are hiding behind the illusion of egalitarianism, while they(Obama, et al.) slowly rob all Americans of our human rights and civil Liberties–i.e., NDAA! No matter who wins in November, both parties are committed to more Austerity iand the gutting of the existing Economic Safety Net! I’ts been 55 years since the beginning of the civil rates era. and we have not made much progress as a people. We don’t build or make anything, we don’t contribute much, we don’t learn, we don’t listen, we don’t understand, we don’t take care of our own, we don’t take care of our selves/

Our hands are always out asking for something for free rather than stepping up and doing for our selves.

We get no respect, because we are like babies, almost totally dependent upon the government! So much so we blacks now believe we are entitled to most everything to be given to us. Food, Housing, Medical, Transportation. Education.

It does not apply to everyone of course, but enough!

All of these things cost money, and because most of us do not understand economic’s we think if it comes from the government no real cost is involved. Wrong! People are getting tired of supporting those who don’t contribute too but consistently take from.

Neither the Dems or Repubs respect us! Stop just giving your vote away, pay no attention to things like Biden,s comment.
Their are other things so much more important, it’s our time it may be now or never! RESPECT RESPECT your self and your brother and sister.

I think you better do a little more work on your history. I think you are using the collective “we” a little too much. You are including all Africans-including yourself-I guess- in this tirade of what we don’t do.
We as a people have some problems and many of our wounds are self-inflicted, but that ‘we’ you are talking about does not cover all blacks. In the few short 147 years after slavery with their feet on our necks we have accomplished much more than I believe any other race would have given our history. Witness how quick we got an African born in America as president once they let their feet up, just a little. We have a couple of billionaires. Magic Johnson is quickly building an empire, we have entrepreneurs all over the country. We have car dealerships, cosmetic industries, , pubishing companies, teachers, doctors, lawyers, firemen, contractors, schools, policemen, authors, and ministers of all stripes, etc..

Many of us are in serious trouble and we as a people need to come up with mind and behavior changing methods to encourage our people that they can do better.

I know the despair that you are feeling, I feel that way too sometimes, but I always buttress that feeling with my history and knowledge of blacks disfranchisment in this country since the moment they set their feet on this ground. Don’t forget the Jim Crow years, don’t forget when they were giving settlers hundred of acres free, when they wouldn’t even let you pan for gold, don’t forget the lynching, inferior schools, wouldn’t let our doctors be on staff in hospitals, don’t forget they held you back and the 53 years since 1965 how far you have come, in lighten speed-with some of the doors still closed. And don’t forget those schools were inferior in the Jim Crow years.

When people are reluctant to discuss their past constructively, they are children. Dr. Boyce and his type in my opinion are still
boys and need to grow up. Yea, slavery was a painful time for
Blacks in America, but it happened for 250 years and if we do not face the past we will revert back to it. We should study our past, look at the faults and extract the positive from it. If one learns the true Ourstory you will take pride on who we were and how we
built this country. One would learn that this country would not be what it is today if not for the Black men and women.
Joe Biden was speaking the truth and people like Boyce is tearing
it down. For us to grow, we need to know and deal with our past. Until then we are doom.

It is absolutely guaranteed that had Joey “The Clown” Biden made remarks which were insensitive to Jews, Hispanics, or homosexuals the White House would not respond by saying: “We have no problem with those comments.”

[America’s first black governor in modern times has become the most senior Democrat to break ranks over Joe Biden’s ‘put y’all back in chains’ comments, telling the Vice President: 'Slavery is nothing to joke about.' Douglas Wilder, who was governor of Virginia from 1990 to 1994, told CNN that 'without question' Biden’s remarks in Danville, Virginia 'were appeals to race'. He continued: 'The important thing I got out of this was Biden separated himself from what he accused the people of doing. As a matter of fact, what he said is they are going to do something to y’all, not to me. Not us. So he was still involved with that separate America. In another interview, with Fox News, Wilder said: 'Slavery is nothing to joke about. And the history of this nation’s involvement with slavery is nothing to pass off in a joke.' Arthur Davis, a black former congressman who was one of President Barack Obama’s most prominent supporters in 2008 but has since defected to the Republicans, told CNN that Biden was employing 'a divisive tactic that’s insulting to African Americans'. The comments, he charged, were a deliberate racial tactic. 'I know what Joe Biden was doing. Every black person in that room knew who the "y'all" was.]

The buffoonery of Joe Biden is only rivaled in American politics by George W. Bush. It was the loose lips of this clown which forced President Obama to come out of the closet and support homosexual marriage. Now he puts the POTUS in the position of having to defend the racially insensitive comments of a fool who is only one heartbeat away from the presidency of the United States.

The Obama Campaign says that “chains” refer to the pro-Wall Street agenda of Mitt Romney. Well, as my granny used to say “the pot can’t call the kettle black.” What president has been more pro-Wall Street than Barack Obama? Just last week the “Department of Justice announced it will not prosecute Goldman Sachs or any of its employees in a financial-fraud probe.” Why might that be, considering the destruction caused by Goldman and other Wall Street banks via derivatives and the sub-prime mortgage crisis?

“In 2008, Goldman Sachs employees were among Barack Obama’s top campaign contributors, giving a combined $1,013,091.”

Apparently the “chains” of the Black president are not a problem. It’s the threat of “chains” by a white Republican that drives Black folks berserk; sort of like the reaction to murder of 7-year-old Heaven Sutton versus the reaction to the murder to Trayvon Martin.

Barack Obama can afford to be just as insensitive as his ignorant vice-president because he knows that he has the Black vote on lock. What other group facing 25 percent unemployment would continue to support failed policies?

As Dr. Asa Hilliard said: “Mental slavery is invisible violence.” Obviously a lot of people don’t realize how much psychological trauma they’ve suffered.

Thanks for sharing governor Wilder’s reaction to the vp’s insensitive remark. In my view, it’s very important for us to know that in 1619 our first ancestors were brought to this part of the globe from the Carribean islands and were traded/bartered, as if they were objects of little value opposed to being the original human beings of the planet, for water, food and clothing and the specific location is known today as “the state of Virginia.” It’s also important for us to know that “indentured servitude” was practiced in that location, roughly 50 plus years prior to 1619. However, we mustn’t confuse “chattel slavery” as being synonymous with indentured servitude because the latter was somewhat voluntary, while the former was established through kidnapping/abduction/detainment/imprisonment, torture, terror, gross acts of violence and death… Which brings to mind why gov. Wilder expressed that ‘Slavery is nothing to joke about. And the history of this nation’s involvement with slavery is nothing to pass off in a joke.’ I agree… The “truth” will set us free but it’s imperative for us to realize that we’ll never be “free” until we become independent, it’s really that simple… Thanks again, for sharing.

        You are correct also!

Chattel slavery was the worst form of slavery done to Black Afrikan people! Indentured servitude was like being in jail…once a criminal served their time for their crime, they were set free!

THE CURRENT JAIL SYSTEM TODAY COPIED THIS FORM OF SERVITUDE FROM THE ANCIENT AFRIKANS!

Afrikans practiced this type of servitude with their own people, who committed crimes against another Afrikan King or his people. Although, they were incarcerated, these criminals still had rights and privileges. Believe it or not; they even had servants under them!!!

These caucasoids from england TRICKED these Afrikan leaders to LEND them their indentured servants, until their time ran out for the crime or crimes they committed. These demon/devils TRADED items with the Afrikan Kings and told them they would return the Afrikans, they took to england, but they NEVER did.

This is where chattel slavery began; in england. THE WORST FORM OF SLAVERY IN THE WORLD. These indentured servants HAD NO RIGHTS, like they had when they were in Afrika.

Also, this is where the LIE came out, that Afrikans sold their own people! They didn’t sell their own people, they were DECEIVED and LIED to, by xtian missionaries from england.

A MIND IS A TERRIBLE THING TO WASTE, BUT A WASTED MIND IS IN TERRIBLE NEED OF TRUTH!!!

Derrick I hear your point loud and clear. It’s also important for all of us to know that the Trans-Atlantic slave trade was initiated by Spain and immediately followed up by Portugal, France and England/Britain. The foregoing confirms why the dominant language spoken in most of the Caribbean Islands (formerly known as the Seasoning Islands) is Spanish followed up by french. To this day Louisiana is the only state that practices French common law opposed to English common law which explains why the French Quarters is still strong in New Orleans & to some extent, why the feds were hesitant in responding to the Katrina disaster.

It’s also important to know that the second largest populace of our people, on the planet, is in Brazil which follows Nigeria… Most of us in Brazil speak Portuguese. Further, there’s roughly the same number of us scattered throughout the Carribean as in the US. In the Caribbean our numbers are concentrated in Cuba, Haiti and Jamaica. Canada is still deemed an English colony while the US is still a watered down version of the same.

Our presence throughout the western hemisphere goes back to the Trans-Atlantic slave trade, made possible by a transportation system & weapon superiority.

Excellent info! I don’t look at tell-a-LIE-vision, but it’s good to be informed about Governor Wilder comments.

I hate to say this, but negroids aren’t gonna wake up to the Truth! They have been brainwashed and lied to for 500 years, and they only beLIEve what their modern day slave maker tells them, on their media outlets.

You know the old saying: if you here a lie long enough; you will soon beLIEve it! These negroids don’t want to hear the Truth from a Black man, but will listen to a lie from a caucasoid male!

i agree with Boyce on a lot of things, but not this one. first of all, how many of us black folk are always saying what Biden has said? We say it all the time: the Tea-Party is trying to re-enslave us. They are trying to turn back the hands of time.’ Biden’s train of thought was absolutely correct. However, the wording could have been more sensitive! ‘put y’ll back in chains’ doesn’t sound sympathetic at all. as I write this, I am now starting to understand what Boyce is saying… that was a rude insensitive thing to say! Biden shouldve said “They are trying to re-invent an evil system of slavery for African-Americans.” So I switch positions and I totally agree with Boyce. lol.

I say some salty words. Chains was not offensive, because I am not going to be in chains unless I am locked up. Lets get why the rethugs won’t allow The Jobs Bill out on the floor. I’d rather you would walk with me
    Than merely show the way,
The eye is much better and more willing than the ear,
As fine words are confusing, but an example
    Is always clear,
And the best of all the teachers are the men
    Who live their creeds,
For to see deeds in action is what
    Everyone needs,
I can learn how to do it if you’ll let me
    See it done,
I can watch your hands in action and see

    And true,
But I’ll get the lesson more by seeing

This is so sad. Can’t anyone express an opinion that we may not agree with without being vilified and called names. Though I agree with Boyce and Doug Wilder, my point here is that Boyce is entitled to his opinions just as you are. And I am sure that you would not appreciate the kind of madness being heaped upon you, as has been heaped upon Boyce, just because you expressed yourself. Intelligent people know how to agree to disagree agreeably so that we can have healthy and productive dialogue instead of the mindless ranting and insulting going on here.

A brief note on Biden’s remarks. I can appreciate that you may not have found Biden’s remarks offensive. That’s ok. I do feel differently, however. As Doug Wilder was quoted as saying, there are some things you don’t joke about and certain comments are in bad taste. Biden is supposed to be smart enough and have a big enough vocabulary to choose his words more carefully. A lot of ill-advised, ill-timed, insensitive and mindless words have emerged from the mouths of so-called “good people who meant no harm.” I think Joe should apologize, not for a malicious comment meant to inflict pain, but for a mindless one that did not take into consideration the serious nature of slavery and all of the death and destruction that accompanied it along with those chains he spoke of. As Boyce indicated, I doubt that Joe would make a similar comment about the Jewish holocaust in the presence of Jews; it would be insensitive and inappropriate. In defense of Boyce, there have to be critics who raise voices to keep affronts to our racial and cultural dignity from getting out of control if for no other reason that there are among our people those who will excuse every inappropriate thing said or done by white people that does not adversely affect them directly because they are unable to connect the psychological, emotional, and spiritual dots between cause of indifference to our history and culture and affect of our condition and position in American society today.

Dr. Boyce keep your articles coming. These Obama lovers can’t see beyond their nose. All many of them see is a bi-racial man who had a black father and married to a black woman. So What!! Obama is no better than other politicians. When a black President tells the black community to “stop complaining” he is nothing to me. I would expect that comment from a white politician, not him. So I’m gonna stop supporting him too because he is no better. Any way my focus will be on the Senators, Congressmen/women and Represenatives. I love your articles so keep it up and ignore the haters!! You know the bible says mankind loves to be lied to, that’s nothing new. They hate the TRUTH! Or can they recognize the TRUTH?

    Boyce Watkins:
Your diatribe about Joe Biden’s comment is a useless distraction from the issues the Republican Party should be held accountable for in the 2012 elections. The most important legislative issue this year is the refusal of the Republican Party to pass a Jobs Bill in the House of Representatives. Secondly, the Republicans want to extend the Bush tax cuts that are set to expire at the end of this year. That is a major issue that President Obama should force the Republicans to defend everyday across the country. The Jobs Bill will cost the Treasury billions of dollars to fund, and the idea of cutting taxes for the wealthy while our economy is still in recovery mode is irresponsible and fiscally illogical. Yet that is what the Republicans advocate. President Obama should prevail on this policy clash with the Republicans on the campaign trail, and be positioned to help create millions of jobs when the Jobs Bill is passed by the House and signed by the president.

Millions of Americans need jobs, not a silly conversation about Americans being chained.

These two rich white men feel they know what’s best for the rest of us. Yeah they’re trying to put us all back in chain’s, economic chains. They want to take all regulations off of the banks and business. If that ain’t slavery then I don’t know what is.

P.S. Brother Dr. Boyce Watkins, I do not agree at all with your characterization of President Obama as you write “But perhaps the reason President Obama is hesitant to hold Biden accountable for his blatant racial disrespect is because he’s accepted the role as Biden’s in-house negro apologist. After all, Biden has referenced President Obama as “the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean.” So, given that Barack is the first bright, clean and articulate black man he’s ever seen, that could explain why Biden’s boy in the White House gives him a pass, even when he slaps his heritage square in the face with a set of remarks he wouldn’t dare repeat to any other Democratic constituency.” Sir you have went far over the line. My support for you has taken a screeching halt.

Does it make a difference that Joe Biden said what most Black folks are thinking. They have made it quite clear from day one, that their ONLY objective for the last four years was to work to remove Pres. Obama from office by any means necessary. If Romney and his crew get in, they are going to try and take us back as far as they can.

So, again, I ask, does it matter if a Black person made the statement or the other culture.

Obama is helping Biden because he is told to do so by David Axelrod, Peter Rouse, Jacob Lew and the other Jews that are dominating and bossing him, and in total charge of the whole show. Yet, this website, which stirs up all kind of hot issues, which are good, NEVER says anything about the Jews surrounding Obama, or Jews PERIOD. Who are still guilty of “bloodsucking” black folks, as the Nation of Islam have long said. Which is the absolute truth. Obama is not really in charge there in the White House. Black folks worldwide are in trouble because we still beg the white man to accept us. They Never will even tho most black folks profess in America christanity – the slave master’s version. We are Not progressing and I don’t see us ever moving forward until white folks really try to bring us back to slavery – Laff if you want.
