Artur Davis Adopts Tea Party Line at RNC Convention: “Let’s Take Our Country Back”
When you hear people on the right say they’re going to take their country back, you have to wonder from whom they’re going to take it. Unlike
President George W. Bush, President Obama was elected by a majority vote, and so were Democratic members of Congress. So you have to wonder why, when Republicans are not in total control, they react as if the country has been stolen, when really they’ve just lost fair and square.
Some say that this “take our country back” rhetoric makes conservatives feel like rebels, and that it’s good for their cohesiveness and self esteem. Still others believe that those on the right who rally behind that cry are dead enders who are responding to the loss of white privilege in this country.
Those on the right want to take what they believe is their country back from immigrants, blacks, and other minorities in this country. They want a return of the era where codified white privilege was codified by law.
There’s some truth to that, which makes it all the more remarkable to hear a black politician, in this case Artur Davis, give a speech where he evokes the very same phrase, “Let’s Take Our Country Back.” Given that line, you have to wonder if Davis has, in all the uproar and egoism of politics, forgotten himself. This was never Davis’ country to take back. The Founders made it clear that only white men were to have a say in this country, so this country never belonged to Davis or his ancestors.
That wasn’t the only aspect of Davis’ speech that drew attention. Davis leveled a good number of cheap shots at President’ Obama and his competancy:
The Democrats’ ads convince me that Governor Romney can’t sing, but his record convinces me he knows how to lead, and I think you know which skill we need more.
Now, America is a land of second chances, and I gather you have room for the estimated 6 million of us who know we got it wrong in 2008 and who want to fix it.
Maybe we should have known that night in Denver that things that begin with plywood Greek columns and artificial smoke typically don’t end well.
Maybe the Hollywood stars and the glamour blinded us a little: you thought it was the glare, some of us thought it was a halo.

Do you think white men stole slave from Africa, without the help of some black fools!,who did not have sense enough to know, that they were selling their freedom!

Get out of here with that Ad Hominem s**t. Its not relative to the conversation. And it is a matter of fact that the first slave capturers were Portuguese and they were given the green light by the Pope who commissioned the Papul Bull that said they could captor all heathens and enslave them. This, unlike your idiotic assertion, is a matter of fact.
But this has nothing to do with an Uncle Tom ranting about white supremacist assertions to codify the support of a bunch of bigots.
@ eric,
i totally understand his point and thought it was relevant to davis.
in your quest to show your arrogance, you showed ignorance! you say his comment on slavery wasn’t relative to the conversation, then you proceed to give a history lesson on the very thing you just criticized him on…slavery.
i guess it depends on who is talking about slavery for it to be considered relevant. slow down on your arrogance and sanctimonious attitude, you’re contradicting yourself! smh
Interesting”
What this Hommie doesn’t know is if the Republicans come to power that taking back America means his Uncle Tom a** is back in slavery!!! Under what rock(s) does the Republican Party find these “Negroes”–West, 999 Cain, et.al!!!!
How does Artur Davis, who Gwen Ifill described in her excellent book as one of the up & coming stars & change agents in the black movement, alll of a sudden become an Uncle Tom just because he breaks away from the tired orthodoxy of current Black Leaders…..Seems like this approach has driven many capable & honorable people from contributing to change in the community & country…
