Yvette Carnell: What the Colorado Massacre Says About White Male Entitlement

In a previous essay, I had this to say about the race based level of entitlement that some white men harbor:
- Rank is important, and for quite some time in this country, whites, and white men especially, have outranked black and brown people… justbecause. Not because of skill, education, work ethic, intelligence, or any other measure that matters. But globalization has turned that world upside down. White men could once get a job, eventually, no matter what. But with outsourcing and cheaper labor, which is the consequence of globalization, not Mexican “illegals”, those days are over, and white working class men refuse to place blame where it belongs.
The massacre in Aurora, Colorado only forces a continued exploration of my view. This from Summer M. of the ’Black Youth Project’:
The media will spend the coming weeks putting together a profile of James Holmes that does anything but call him a domestic terrorist, that will never question how he was taken into custody relatively unscathed compared to young black and Latino men who are accosted by the police for an ounce of weed or nothing at all. And no popular news network will openly consider the idea that Holmes was a white male who felt entitled to something better, his alleged American birthright. And because he didn’t have better, he responded violently–tragically.
At some point, we should all explore whether the psychological conditioning of some white men in this country, to feel as if they’re entitled to something as opposed to they’re going to have to compete for something, has caused a devastating psychic fracture among them. It’s as if they’ve awakened in a maze, befuddled and confused, and are now forced to wonder, Who Stole My Cheese?
The news coming from Colorado is tragic, shaking us from within, but why are our only initial assessments about the shooter related to mental illness? And even if he is mentally ill, so what? Don’t life’s pressures often trigger crazy? No one has presented any evidence, as yet, that James Holmes was a perpetually troubled young man, so why aren’t we exploring other possible inducements for his b****y rampage? How does a neuroscience student morph into a mass murderer? I don’t know, but I’m not going to narrow the possibilities in order to reassure white people that everything is just fine in their brains.
Premeditating the murders of strangers isn’t normal, it’s sick. And so is slaughtering your school mates, and sicking a police dog on a woman with her infant in tow – which we saw done by the police in Anaheim this week.
And while these predator sorts are lurking among us, while they, like Holmes, are freely purchasing arsenals of high grade weaponry, Malik and Mateo are being stopped and frisked in NYC. It all intertwines. And it will all go on until the dominant forces in American culture face what is broken and twisted up in them. Until then, nothing changes.

I don’t follow the logic in this case. He was on a full scholarship and got a stipend to live on, and would have surely been making tons of money once he completed his Phd. Oh, but, yeah, he’s mad at Mexicans..who writes this trash

You obviously don’t have basic reading comprehension skills. The crux of the story is about white entitlement and its possible effects on the psychology of white males. The differences that people like your self will refuse to acknowledge about how whites are treated after creating such heinous acts as opposed to how people of color (especially black people) are treated. There is this push to examine mental illness of this individual who was very calculated in his approach to explain this ludicrous behavior. Juxtaposed this approach to the commentary surrounding people like Mike Vick who was brow beat and dehumanized by talking heads for engaging in dog fights. There was no attempt to explain or rationalize Vick’s behavior, the general sentiment was to treat this individual with disdain and abhorrence. But with this Monster who shot 70 some people, there is this push to contextualize his actions. There are people of color who come up in ghettos so harsh that trauma has been compared to those in so-called war torn areas. And when these people create crimes on a much lesser scale, there is no rush to contextualize this behavior. They receive swift and quick hypocritical condemnation from the dominant culture, who ironically, are the cause for these people of color’s harsh realities.
“blacks as perpetual victims” routine is getting old. Really old.
The staged “I’m outraged” events are getting old. Really old.
Watching whole cities and communities that were once gems of Western
progress and ingenuity (Detroit, etc) become crime-ridden, third-world
cesspits is getting old. Really. b****y. Old.
Blacks today are disproportionately perpetrators of violent crimes
against whites and against other blacks. According to data from the
FBI Uniform Crime Reports, in 2009, “whites” — a category that
includes Hispanics — were known to be responsible for 5,286 murders.
Blacks, a mere 13% of the population, were known to be responsible for
5,980 murders. In 2005, the New Century Foundation’s “Color of Crime”
report found that “Blacks commit more violent crime against whites
than against blacks. Forty-five percent of their victims are white, 43
percent are black, and 10 percent are Hispanic. When whites commit
violent crime, only three percent of their victims are black.” Also in
2005, the Department of Justice reported that one-third of rapes
committed against white women (approximately 37,000) were perpetrated
by blacks, while less than ten — statistically zero — rapes of black
women were committed by whites.
Fact — blacks kill 7 times more than whites kill. Fact — blacks kill
whites 20 times more than whites kill blacks. Fact — blacks mug or
commit group crime against whites 50 times more than whites commit
against blacks. Fact — blacks rape white women 2000 (yes 2000) times
more than whites rape black women.
Lots of white people that white man killed in that theatre… OH, WAIT! Sorry, you were trying to change the subject to black rape and murder. Sorry. Carry on…

He was clear-headed enough to spend a lot of time and detail preparing for this. Hitler was not mentally ill, he was evil. He also pre-planned his entire mass murder plot ahead of time.

Detroit didn’t deteriorate because of Black people…Blacks migrated there( and other heavily industrialized areas) during the Great Migration and were able to get a piece of the American Dream. I say a piece because whites, as usual, stymied progress with their racial bull s**t ( keeping Blacks from moving to certain areas, not promoting Blacks to higher paying jobs, although they had learned the needed skills and were qualified, etc.).
Detroit as many of the Rust Belt states outlived its usefulness. Companies moved away so they could get labor cheap. The bottom also fell out of the steel industry. People moved from the inner city, as many middleclass people do. All of those reason and more causes inner cities to fall apart.

If Blacks kill a million whites it still wouldn’t add up to the number of Blacks killed by whites. Furthermore it isn’t in a Black persons DNA to commit a mass murder like this sicko in Colorado. Blacks may commit more crime than whites in relation to the % of population (which is debatable when you consider all the “white collar crime and serial killers) but if you add up the number of people killed overall by Blacks versus Whites, it’s overwhelming that more are killed at the hands of whites than blacks. Please don’t get it twisted, Whites are overwhelmingly more prone to committing crimes than Blacks; we just pay a much higher price for it and get more exposure.

Urban decay is symptom of corporate geographical moves. Detroit decayed due to persistent deindustrialization–the movement of companies to the third world to exploit cheap labor. The Automotive industry, a large employer, found its way in other areas like Mexico. This move by GM was supported by Tariff removing legislation such as NAFTA. A book heavily funded by the white supremacist “pioneer fund” that has repeatedly sponsored white supremacist research on Eugenics, so-called IQ testing, the bell curve, and other pseudo science aimed at justifying white devilish behavior and practices. The cut and pasted figures aren’t proof of anything, nor do they validate anger and fear currently held by white supremacist like you. Real social scientist has concluded based on overall crime statistics that race is not a determinant for criminality.
• When looking at so-called criminality amongst races with similar socioeconomic backgrounds there is no difference in the degree of criminality.

Essentially, what is your main argument for this article? Could you boil it down to a sentence for your readers? Because right now it seems like you’re saying that Jamie Holmes killed those people because he felt that his economic prospects were dwindling in the face of increased immigration. And that doesn’t really make a whole lot of sense, even for someone who would massacre scores of people.
Let me remind you of Seung-Hui Cho, another mass murderer but one who was not white. Did he suffer from this same anti-immigration tendencies that you prescribe to Jamie Holmes? Both of these men were diagnosed with mental illness, and only one was white. Just because Holmes is white doesn’t mean that people won’t condemn him.
Mental illness is also more than just a, “so what?” in this situation. An estimated 26.2 percent of Americans over 18 suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder (source: National Institute of Mental Health.com) and yet it’s one of the least understood form of disease and one of the most feared in our culture. Funding in mental health programs, therapy, and studies could even prevent tragedies such as this one from occurring.
Also, minor correction, but the police officer in Anaheim did not use that dog to attack a pregnant woman and infant, it escaped from the vehicle. That’s the official story anyway, but if you watch the news coverage the police officer is frantically trying to get the dog off of her so it makes more sense than a cold-blooded attack with a canine.

Chris — Yes, mental illness is more than “so what?” But most people with mental illness aren’t violent toward others. They suffer within themselves. However, people with entitlement mentality are more likely to “project” their issues onto others.
So Yvette’s article is relevant in the points she raises. People of color have endured much pressure (socially, psychologically and economically) but do not generally go out and mass murder innocent people. They might harm someone they know due to inability to handle stress and conflict or because they are evil. White male serial killers tend to act for the same reasons but they also punish groups of people to make their point. They always end up getting the attention they crave and even respect for their predicament when people seek an explanation and context for why they behaved violently.
A personality/character disorder is the more apt reason for these mass killers than mental illness per se. In seeking to punish other people who have nothing to do with their life circumstances, these murderers are acting more from anger than illness.

Saying that people of color do not generally go out and murder innocent people is a huge generalization, even without the qualifier of “generally.” I was going to include a list in order to make my point but I decided against it. I’m sure you can find many counter-examples to your claim if you search Google.
What is also a huge generalization is, “[White male serial killers] always end up getting the attention they crave and even respect for their predicament when people seek an explanation and context for why they behaved violently.” Jared Lee Loughner did not get respect for killing people at that Tucson, Arizona supermarket. Charles Whitman did not get respect when he opened fire from the tower at University of Texas. No one respected John Wayne Gacy, Jeffrey Dahmer, or Ted Bundy. All of these men are reviled and villified, the opposite of any sort of respect. These men disprove your claim of white male serial killers *always* gaining respect for violent crimes.
I don’t know why we’re making this a racial debate. Does it really matter that Holmes is white? Would it matter or change things if he were any other color? Would it matter to the victims and the families of the victims? Of course not. Tragedy is colorblind. The Colorado massacre says nothing about white entitlement, Yvette. Stop spinning it as such.
Maybe Tim Wise can better explain the message regarding white privilege. In this video he actually speaks about massacres (e.g., Columbine, etc.) and terrorism. It’s a great video, and I am SURE it will help to explain what the above author attempt to explain. BTW, Tim Wise is White. Enjoy!!!

An example of what the article can point out is that why is it when a black person kills someone it is considered to be black on black crime, but when white people kill each other it is just crime?

There has been no group of people more violent then White privileged men. The mass murders and rapes of people of color throughout the world is sickening. Very well written and very true! I’ve seen it happen first hand and what is funny to me is that they always want to analyze why minorities act out and have dedicated many stories to that topic but no one wants to own that the white man is breaking and its his own system that has broken him.

I get highly disturbed when I see so called “experts” on the news trying to psycho-analyze the minds of white men when they go on killing sprees, and these “experts” come up with these rationales as to why and what triggered their senseless rage. However, when black men are in similar situations, there is no expert that tries to understand or put some perspective to their plight. They’re just written off as violent savages and natural born killers. THIS is why the issue of race has come up in this case. Because black criminals and white criminals are NOT treated the same.
When ridiculous and senseless acts of violence are committed, particularly in the manner that this demon did it, to h**l with what was in his mind. He knew full well what he was doing when he put on an entire body of armor to protect his own life to go and take the life of others.

Yvette, well said indeed! I work in a large educational environment and white males rule! They rule with an iron fist and if anyone dissents or deviates from “their rules”, there is h**l to pay. They are vengeful beings and will stop at nothing to destroy a “rebel” black especially. I have also seen a few brought down a few pegs, and they cry like squaling babies left without food for days until a cronie feels sorry enough to grab him back up the ladder. It is what it is! However, I have noticed on this site that some people have a hard time listening to the voice of the author, Yvette Carnell. What can i say or add to that, We are American, we are perfect people with some kind of inferioity superiority complex, which one I am not sure otherwise why would we behave the way we do. The young man action is surprising to many people, but not to me. We murder people every day all ovber the world. And since we are the ruler of the world we determine who should die because we do not see the people dying as humans like ourselves.They are either terroeist, or creminals.

Certain facts are facts to some people while the same “facts” mean nothing to others. Statistics prove according to the manipulators. Even history has been described by some as “lies agreed upon”. I don’t believe anyone on this thread is qualified to condemn a race by examining the actions of a disturbed few. Just because we read or hear that something is true does not make it so. How many times have we read or heard that Columbus discovered America? The Scandinavians don’t believe that. Neither do educated native Africans. Artifacts from Scandinavia and Africa have been found on this continent that predates the birth of Columbus.

I am a white woman. I have just read all the comments and people are angry. People try to make sense of things and figure out why people do what they do. They write their comments in response and others just deny, refute, or judge the comments.
I believe all these comments are a current reflection of the state of humanity and compassion or lack of it. All viewpoints are important to listen to. Whether there is any truth to anything anyone has said in their comments is really not important. What is important is that people are upset at the lack of understanding between the ‘races’ and the lack of understanding between cultures, including the painful results of oppression.
We all need to be listening to each other more, even if we don’t initially agree or it is hard to hear, particularly when black people say they live in a white priviledged world. It is difficult for white people to hear that, relate to it, or understand it, just as it was difficult for the white man to hear from the white woman that equality does not exist between the genders. When someone is in a position of assumed power, it is not in their interest to hear otherwise, or risk losing this power.
As the Jews speak about and remind us of the atrocities of the concentration camps, so must black people, speak of the atrocities inflicted upon their culture. As white people, we must open up our eyes, ears and hearts. Once we do, we will see many examples of inequality around us. This will be profoundly sad, but then after acceptance we can heal a nation of all cultures together.
I witnessed the murder of a black man 16 years ago and then saw how the police, media and political system distorted the facts. The victims mother and sister just wanted to address the issue of racism but the courts would not allow it, stating that racism did not exist in this case.

It is not surprising that so many black men are incarcerated. One has only to look at the judicial system in Canada. There is not even one black judge in the Supreme Court of Canada. For justice to prevail in the judicial system, we must have more black men as lawyers and judges.

What I find sad is racism is alive and well in all groups. I find it strange that people who claim to be religious and God fearing are among that group of haters. No mater who we are we all pretty much want the same things in life. Seems to me that we need to love one another and try to leave a peaceful world to our children. I was taught that we are ALL God’s children!
I don’t see how this shooting has anything related to racism. I know that there are bad cops but they put up with allot. If they are abusive they need to be fired and/ or prosecuted.
Whenever someone quotes statistics especially from the FBI. The same FBI that started Cointelpro. Always remember the basic rules of journalism even on blogs. Who, what, when, where, why and how? When did the FBI start compiling National Crime Stats? 1965 The same year Civil Rights Legislation went into effect. When did the FBI gain police powers to arrest people in the first place? Not until after the infamous Lindburgh Baby kidnapping before they were just Tax Auditors. Whenever someone quotes the percentage of Black people in this country followed by “only” this is a dismissive tactic to psychologically make the reader of such bs think the number is less than it is. 10% of 100 million is 10 million. 10% of 200 million is 20 million. 10% of 300 million is 30 million. 14% of 320 Million people is about 37 million people. Did you notice how they never say that number but happily give you the exact number of murder, death kill amounts. Not to mention the skewed stats. They lump Latinos in with White people but the FBI doesn’t. They leave out the facts that White people only make up 11% of the global population. Whenever someone quotes stats from the last decade do you ever notice how they always seem to ‘forget’ about Iraq and Afghanistan and the millions of people they killed because it’s not murder when you call it War? Especailly on a group of people who hadn’t done anything to your a***s right? So lets dip through history with killings? 100 Million Africans died during the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade. Does anyone find it strange when we speak of Holocaust that most children including African American can tell you how many so-called Jews died in some n**i Camp but most Black people even Adults get stunned by that number because it wasn’t in your History books in high school was it? The 120 to 160 million Native Americans exterminated to take over this Country. The millions (no one knows the exact amount) of Mez-co Indians wiped out to take over California and Texas. Dropping Nukes, The Inquisition, The French-Indian War, The Bolshevik Revolution, World Wars 1 &2, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq 1 &2, Afghanistan, Cuba, The Revolts in Haiti. Not to mention everytime some Democratically elected Leader rose up in Africa to use the resources for the people they had their CIA murder them and put some puppet Kleptocrat in their place. Then to have the nerve to go on predominately Black Blogs and lecture us like they are standing on some freaking soap box in 1950′s America and us po Negroes should believe anything and everything they say silently. While ignoring every Evil act they did and are currently doing across this Planet. I’m not saying there should be some victim Olympics as if there is a winner. But I wish some White People who love claiming victory in every other category except the worst Killer on the planet would shut the eff up! Or be honest at least and claim your title. I guess reading is fundamental becaue the whole point of this article wasn’t about Black on White Crime or Crime Statisitics. I thought the point was how some people don’t want to accept the real enemy is the Elite mostly White but not all who make money off the misery of regular working class White people by whispering silently in their ear. You will make it because you’re white just like me, just ride it out. While stabbing these people in the back and sending good jobs overseas or employing new slave labor like in Prisons to do the work. All the while convincing these idiots to be against Unions, Worker Rights, Government Regulations, Labor Laws and anything to put them in check by simply blaming it on the other. Whether it’s Latinos or Blacks. This is where Ms. Carnell’s point kicks in about entitlement. Each and every last one of these people snap because quite simply they believed the lie and when they finally realized it was a lie they couldn’t handle it. What better way for a self-absorbed psychopath who thinks of himself as a God and was always told he was God, in every movie, book, story and song? Kill a whole bunch of innocent people because in their minds that’s what God does… and as you have read for yourself by other comments God doesn’t ever see what he does as wrong. He’s God. It doesn’t count when he does it?
