North Carolina GOP Officially Kills Racial Justice Act
The groundbreaking legislation had made it possible for death row inmates to reduce their sentences to life in prison if they could show that their sentences were based on widespread racial bias.
The new bill doesn’t allow as evidence the one objective proof used to show widespread racial bias – math. The rewritten law, which guts the previous law, severely limits the use of statistics in proving widespread racial bias.
Gov. Perdue said: “[t]his year’s Senate Bill 416 is not a ‘compromise bill’; it guts the Racial Justice Act and renders it meaningless.” The veto-override passed the House 72-48 and the Senate 31-11.
