Morgan Freeman: “Obama is Not America’s First Black President”

When asked during the campaign how he views himself, candidate Barack Obama said that he views himself as black. He went onto say that cab drivers who pass him by on the street also view him as black. But Morgan Freeman doesn’t buy the idea that President Obama is America’s first black president.

The Oscar winner explained what he meant on NPR:

First thing that always pops into my head regarding our president is that all of the people who are setting up this barrier for him … they just conveniently forget that Barack had a mama, and she was white — very white American, Kansas, middle of America,” Freeman said. “There was no argument about who he is or what he is. America’s first black president hasn’t arisen yet. He’s not America’s first black president — he’s America’s first mixed-race president.

Do you agree with Freeman? Are we still waiting for America’s first black president?

Who’s is “they” ? I keep wondering what omnipotent entity has that kind of power? Black is a social term not a biological one. No one is really Black they are Black socially and politically that is it. A drop of melanin means only that you have a drop of melanin added to your genes that have very little if you are white. I am Black because my parents are and I do not care about who raped who on the plantation I am Black and my ancestors are from West Africa and the Caribbean.

I am a white person that has a lot of respect for you and your, for like of a better word, people. Even a as little boy I could not see abusing the Black people in our community. I was raised in North Florida, but no longer live there. My opinion has always been if a person could do the job then it made no difference who, what or what color that person was.

this is lunacy. most (if not all) black people in the US have white ancestors – ‘black’ itself is a multiracial category. the importance of what cab drivers and police see has nothing to do with who your parents are, or for that matter who you ‘really’ are – it is the way race and blackness work as a social, public, and sometimes lethal category.

but we all know morgan is having a large set of issues these days.

for more on why ‘multiracial’ is problematic, check out philosopher jared sexton’s book Amalgamation Schemes.

THANK YOU for being so INTELLIGENT, learned and on POINT! I stopped listening to and valuing what M. Freeman said and stands for a LONG time ago! He is the poster boy for the nightmare effects of American/Western/white brainwashing. If anyone is aware of the history of “our” people’s history – American Africans – then that person would know that the a HUGE portion of native born Blacks are new world African people (that also includes Africans in the Americas) and we most likely have the lineage of at least 3 “nations” flowing through our “veins” – Native, African and European! While our possessing these varied ethnic group ancestories may be important, or of some value, let us NOT forget that none of this and root people of all the earth’s “sub-ethnic/racial” groups. The thing about our POTUS is that he is truly an African American and his wife is and American African! Whatever we LABEL and divide ourselves as – which can most certainly be counterproductive to Black unity and national cohesiveness – we are ALL Black people – and NO amount of white “blood” can or will change that, especially HERE in the good ole US of A! As for me, I’m good just knowing that I am Eve and a new world African; but more importantly, in Yeshua Ha Messiah – Jesus the Christ, I am a child of the Most High All and All and there is NO division within the Almighty! Thanks Professor Jawn for your insightful and SANE response. Y’all be cool and don’t sweat the small stuff (or people); and remember that it’s ALL mostly small stuff in the grand scheme of things! Peace!

That is not true! How unintelligent it is for anyone to still think this. Not every African slave was raped by a white man! Some people escaped to Canada, some mingled and live with the Native Indians. In order for your statement to be accurate every Black persons ancestors where either raped or their was a plantation version of Caligula going on on the daily! Funny, Africa is the cradle of civilization but when is the last time a white person said my ancestors are African? And you seem gleeful to make white people your ancestor, why? Its okay to be Black! We had our language taken and out culture and some of our spirit but we are still here and we not finished yet!

        @Ifa-El Akbar

So not true 98% of Blacks who had ancestor’s that were dropped in THIS country have a mixed background. Only 17% of Blacks captured as a result of the slave trade were brought to the United States, with the majority dropped in the West Indies, and South America. However, prior to the development of chattel slavery there was indentured servitude in which intermingling happened.

During slavery many black women were raped, however history also shows that there were MANY interracial relationships that happened. This is the history of this country, and running to Canada does not negate the fact you have a ancestor of a different it just means that they ran to Canada seeking freedom.

Are you saying that two native Black African parents whose son is born in the U.S., and elected president of the U.S. would not be considered an African American president just because his parents weren’t descendants of slaves? Think this through logically, based on your proposition, before you answer the question.

Come on now Morgan!!! We are talking about the United States, right? Wikipedia does reference the “One drop rule” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One-drop_rule
The terms “mixed race and biracial”, in most of these fifty states still lands you in the same drawer as African American, Black and Negro. Being black myself, born and raised in New Orleans, I’ve heard most of the arguments from those considering themselves Mulatto and different degrees of the “Roon” family, e.g. Octo, Quad, Quint and macaroon (Hahaha).
Seriously, when applying for a bank loan, an apartment in certain areas or opening accounts in some stores, it became obvious that degrees of blackness did not matter. You were still considered non-white and was treated the same as the darkest negro in town.

I agree with Morgan Freeman. Also having been raised by whites his world view is likely Eurocentric. Other than through his black wife, President Obama probably feels little connection to the African American community which is why he seems comfortable disrespecting us. The irony is that he gets away with it because of his black skin.

Cortez, what racial epithet would you use to call a biracial person of black and white mix? What racial epithet would the majority of white people use? I know many Hispanics of Carribean descent, particularly, lighter skin individuals, like to consider themselves white or mixed if their skin tone is lighter than carmel brown. Most will skirt uncomfortably around the issue of their African ancestry. Lastly, how do you describe a biracial mix of Asian and African American, East Indian and African American, Native Indian and African American. Maybe Egyptians are biracial since they as diverse as Hispanics.

        PitBull & Cortez

These are all Ethinc groups that have derived from Africa. Individuals who are of Hispanic descent who are from Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, and Cuba and so on are of African descent. In fact like those from the Carribean they have a more direct link to Africa than most blacks in the U.S. because there was less racial mixing. The only thing that differs is that they were colonized by Spain and they speak the language of their oppressor. Native American’s, East Indians, ancestor’s are all from Africa.

I agree. Lois is making the most sense. I am so so glad to know that color is the covering only. The paint on the house is not the house. The beautiful color of the flower is not the flower. All color is beautiful but it is not essence. It has no power. It is not personality. IT IS NOT THE PERSON. It is not who I am. I’m of a higher glory. I am the image and likeness of my Creator. The Creator is spirit, no color. His spirit is all power and all love. And it doesn’t get any better than that. I feel for so many who haven’t yet seen the Light. You and I are better than color people. The so-called “white” family member has a pathology i.e., racism. He is diseased by an inborn selfishness, hatred and bigotry. So our brother a la white cannot define you. Let God do that is my wisdom for you. The “whites”, NOT ALL, need a healing that only the Creator can grant one. The disease can come to all of us unless we ask the Creator for His love to prevent it from contaminating us. God bless to all.

  8. Basil July 6, 2012 at 6:53 pm

I have observed Obama. He definitely takes something from the African American world. He has been connected to the community through his church, wife, and his color. Yes, he has a white mother. That’s true. Yes, he’s biracial. To many Americans, he is a black man. Yes, some see him as biracial, but plenty see him as black. So Morgan Freeman is not completely correct. I do see Obama as biracial, but his father was black, and blackness is part of Obama, so I would say, in a way, he is America’s first black president. Twenty years ago, Morgan Freeman wouldn’t have called him biracial. That’s more of a new idea as America has become more mixed and racial boundaries are becoming more open and blurred.

When the majority of blacks who ancestor’s were born in this country are of mix ancestry The only reason why it has if it has taken on a a pejorative context is it’s association with slavery. However the word it’self should not be associated with the term n****r. The issue with blacks in this country is that they were conditioned to believe that being EVERYTHING other than black is better

All humans are of African ancestry. About 60,000 years ago, some Africans started leaving N.E. Africa, because of some calamity of nature. However to get to the issue, Obama is not a Black president. With a White parent, he could also be considered white.

It is true that this historically racist country considers a person with a minor degree of recent African ancestry to be black, because with the advent of color prejudice a few hundred years ago, the white supremacist rulers, wanted a large slave population, and also, sought ways to keep poor whites and their exploited victims divided, to prevent their unity against their rulers.

To continue: It does not matter what party wins, or candidate, the rulers of “The United States of Criminal Insanity” are not going to relinquish their rule, or make significant concessions to the masses, because of a lost election. They will bring out the police, national guard, and all of the military if needed to maintain their rule. In 2008, the Republicans had two “Idiots” representing the capitalists, and the Democrats had two “political prostitutes” to represent the capitalist rulers. No ruling class in history has given up power because of losing an election, because of prayers, marches or any thing similar. I do not and have never advocated violence, but the truth of history is that is how this government came into existence. Obama is a hypocritical “Pacifier” con man.

u guys keep talking about all black people are multiracial. if that is the case then all white people are 2. blacks just love to say how mixed they are…and not looking at the obvious african blood. i thought morgan meant that there were other black presidents before barack hussein who had black blood. prezzies like abe lincoln and hardy. h**l, even the 1st roosevelt is though to have african blood. also, i thought morgan was referring to the fact that in the hemisphere we had black prezzies in columbia, haiti, venezuela and other regional places from way back in the 18th and 19th centuries. the phenomenon of ‘first black’ is not an american one. haiti had a first black in 1795, so did columbia and venezuela. jamaica, tanzania, nigeria, etc. had real black presidents before usa. and barack swings it both ways when he wants to.
and remember people, enslavement of africans happened all over the americas, from canada to argentina. so americans do not have that monoploy. leave barack alone. at least he married a sister, unlike some of those ‘full-bloodied’ black men who still run after white meat.
and stop promoting that multiracial c**p. next time the police stops u, just tell them u are multiracial!

I find it very strange indeed, that today, anyone would question what someone wants to call themselves. Think about what would be said if he called himself, White. The President is as Black as anyone in our society that calls themselves Black. For those that don’t live in Chicago, when he is here, it is as plain as day. No questions about it. But here is the thing. The Republican Party has stood in the way of EVERYTHING that the President has tried to do. And African Americans have now feed into the c**p that he hasn’t done enough for Black people. Well, let’s try it the other way. What specifically has the President done to hurt Black people? And what has the Republican Party done to hurt Black people? For that matter, there are people in the Democratic Party that has not tried to help the President. The idea is that they want him to fail. And this racial issue is just all a part of that plan. Morgan Freeman can say whatever he wants, but there is no way that I will feed into that c**p. Strange that the President is being held more accountable than your senator or house member or mayor or governor. They get a pass. Do you realize that not one of the 100 senators in the country is Black? Do you realize that all of the house members are elected from only Black or Hispanic or American Indian areas and not a Black person over a White district? And someone like Freeman has the nerve to attack the President by saying apparently that he is not Black enough. What’s the old saying, “Negro please.”

I have found many of Morgan’s quips to be very obtuse. Obama is not black…… I mean, what are you all thinking? really, ANYONE in the real world knows how individuals in the real world are characterised. By this extrapolation is Tiger Woods really CABLINASIAN? his dad is black by MF’s rules! Is he bi-racial.. of course he is… but he IS BLACK PEOPLE…As a West-Indian, maybe Obama is the first black man of this stature without a chip on his shoulder and THIS baffles Black Americans… they cant wrap their minds around this. Please note that American slave descendants do not have the monopoly on blackness.. its arrogant and ignorant and Im beginning to feel MF IS losing it.

President Obama has alot of melanin in his skin. He looks black to me. But I think it is more important to respect how President Obama identifies himself. I am sure, though, he embraces both his Black African and White American heritage. He named his first book, “Dreams of My Father” and highly speaks of his heritage. What I would like to know is Morgan Freeman’s reason for raising the issue.

I can still recall vividly my white mother (blue eyes and red hair) looking me in the eye as a small child telling me to never forget that I am a black man. Society made certain I learned the lesson and my own conscience bears witness to it each day of my life. Our President is a black man with a white mama

So I’ve often said that the hope for our society is intermarriage. I am of Jewish heritage and when my sister married a man of a German background my grandfather who was gassed during WWI wanted to throw him down the steps. Once the grandchildren were born my grandfather embraced them with the joy that any grandparent would. We will reconcile our biases once our children and grandchildren are part of a multicultural landscape.

When the “forefathers” wanted to seperate the races into different catagorie they decided that anyone who was not 100% caucasion they would be labled as the race that was other. I know plenty of biracial people who say they are BLACK. And that is their personal choice and right to define based on how they feel and see themselves in the world, and how others’ receive them. Obama saying he is Black does not nor can it ever negate his White mother and ancestry. I am sick and tired of the Morgan Friedman’s and Bill Cosby’s of the world who think their fame gives them a license to speak as if what they say weighs in on anything worth hearing. Interesting, old man Morgan should say this now…mmm, close to election time. He needs to stick to his scripted role as an actor and let people define who they are based on their cultural connection and natural affinity. BLACK is not just about skin color so shut up Morgan and go learn to embrace the multiplicity of BLACKNESS!!! YOU DO NOT speak for us. Black people have a right to celebrate Barak Obama as a Black man just as much as Barak Obama has a right to say he is a Black MAN. …nothing to do with the Black race? You’re delusional and mislead. I’m sorry for you. Let’s break it down. First of all his father is from the MOTHER LAND – AFRICA!!!” Secondly, the first human race began in Africa and over the evolution of humans spreading around the world moved out across the world to which environmental factors such as colder climates, less sun, less heat, living in caves etc., influenced more or less pigmentation (color) differences, hair, eye color, shapes of noses, eyes, lips etc. The Aborigenese people are Black with straight to kinky and curly hair and some of them are blond and red headed and are NOT mixed with European ancestry and yet some have blond hair. What we are looking at and calling different races today are different metamorphical changes due to environment…NOT RACE. There is no such thing as DIFFERENT RACES; there is only ONE RACE and that is the human race. An entire exhibit in Washington, D.C. at the Museum of Natural history on “RACE” was beautifully illustrated in showing the entire science behind it. The original people, as in first world people, never saw themselves as “different races.” They saw themselves as human bretherens and extensions of one another in the human family, trading and sharing the planet with balance. The idea of “Race” was created by Europeans in order to create a political division between themselves and people of color and the mess we have in societies today speaks to that. So if Obama says he’s BLACK, he’s Black! If a Mexican say’s he’s Black, he’s Black, if an Indian say’s he’s Black, he’s Black, if a biracial person says he/she’s BLACK he’s BLACK, he’s human, related to the enitre human family – because all people are ONE with different strands and that first ONE came out of AFRICA. President Bill Clinton spoke about this during his presidency back in the 1980s. ONE LOVE.

It is unfortunate that definition has been convoluted by racist educational system. That is to define people by color which is so asinine,to pallow African people of many different countries from many different clans and tribes to be labeled by color, the same is true of Europeans or other nations. We have been hoodwinked to buy into the the color code system of racism. African people come from Africa therefore they are Africans,Obama is not a Black man he knows his tribe,His mother is European from a nationality. This whole question of Black & White is based on racism. Please it makes no difference if you are the beautiful handsome African man by the name of Morgan Freeman,he has also bought into the definition by the Europeans or Anglos by the racist system. Why not just say African are you ashamed of being African and they do come in many comlexions. Go to the dictionary see what Black is and what White is one is always superior and the other inferior even tody. We know that Black is beautiful and so is white and any other color. Do not by into the the racist color code system the ethos of discrimination and bigotry.. Kunte Kinte was still African just because the Slave Master beat him does not change his nation or tribe. There is no such thing as a black race or a white race of people in the human family. This is a made up concept. There are people of many hues all over the planet earth. It’s amazing to see intelligent men and women continuing to perpetuate this false concept throughout the world. Using black and white as a classification of a people, creates a problem that triggers one to be relegated to a position of superior and the other to an inferiority status for the express purpose of political, social and economic control of the planets resources. President Obama is a human being just like any other man. Fighting the black and white game of supremacy is an unsolvable riddle. We are all probably mixed with something; some known, some unknown. The man is black; if he wasn’t, they wouldn’t be so angry that he’s President. Why do we have to prove to one another how black we are? When I was growning up, I wasn’t black enough. My skin is golden brown and i spoke proper english. I never saw anyone white in my family; but I’m pretty confident my great grandmother was with a white slave owner. Does this make me less black? I don’t think so.

You think that this President has done nothing for black people, just wait until the white republicans get back in office. They don’t care about the working class people at all. Morgan Freeman has nothing to worry about. He does not care who gets in office because he has millions. Why are we always putting down our own kind? This is one reason why we as a race are still so far behind other races in this country. The whites, jews, indians, people from china and japan stick together, but we don’t. We still have the slave mentality that white slave owners brainwashed us with 250 years ago. The light negroes could be inside the house but the darker skin negroes worked in the fields. It’s too bad that this country is filled with blind people. The race issue is one of many tools which are used purposely to divide and alienate people, but that isn’t all we are strapped with. Our whole thought processes have been corrupted from the moment we begin consciousness. To make it short. Nothing is as it seems, and we are lied to on a regular basis. Yet most are unable to comprehend, and most are unable to understand the frightening dilemma which we are constantly conned into living with. Some know this, but most don’t know nor care. In the long run it doesn’t make any difference who or what is pretending to lead this country, because it (the country) is not what we are led to believe it is! Blacks should know better, but alas how can they? When they are too busy either trying to copy whites or trying to stay alive to enjoy their ignorance.

Why is Morgan Freeman, the same dude who said that Black History Month is “ridiculous,” raising this issue?

[The actor says he believes the labels "black" and "white" are an obstacle to beating racism. "I am going to stop calling you a white man and I'm going to ask you to stop calling me a black man.”]—AP 12/2005

Although Barack Obama defines himself as an Afrikan American he consistently uses self-denigrating terms when asked about his ancestry.

[When asked about his background, which includes a black father and white mother, Obama said of African-Americans: "We are sort of a mongrel people." "I mean we're all kinds of mixed up," Obama said. "That's actually true of white people as well, but we just know more about it." The president's remarks were directed at the roots of all Americans. The definition of mongrel as an adjective is defined as "of mixed breed, nature, or origin," according to dictionary.com]

I actually have not heard anyone use the term “mongrel” to describe Afrikan Americans other than white supremacists. He also describes himself as a mutt.

“There are a number of breeds that are hypoallergenic, but on the other hand our preference is to get a shelter dog, but obviously, a lot of the shelter dogs are mutts like me,” Obama said.

My grandmother was raped by a white man when she was 13. Her mother, my great-grandmother, got scared and fled South Carolina. My mother’s experience was, and my experience is the Black experience in America. We would never describe ourselves using such derogatory terms. Barack Obama, growing up in Hawaii, Indonesia, and with white grandparents in Kansas, does not have that experience, which is what Shirley Sherrod tried to explain to him.

“He is not someone who has experienced what I have experienced through life, being a person of color. He might need to hear some of what I could say to him. I don’t know if that would guide him in a way that he deals with others like me, but I at least would like to have the opportunity to talk to him about it.”

Shirley Sherrod’s father was murdered; shot in the back, by a white man in 1965 in Baker County, Ga. Sherrod was 17 at the time. As per usual the all-white grand jury convened to investigate the murder refused to indict the white man.

Obama’s experience does not make him any less Afrikan American, but I believe that it definitely affects his worldview and consciousness, or his lack of it.

Imagine if everything. I mean everything! That we have been taught or dis-taught about this nation and it’s leaders is as false and (con)concocted as most things we are hearing and experiencing today! Think about everything we have read and experienced about our ancestors, the native Americans, the Mexicans, the colonized nations around the world. Think about all of the lying and scheming it took to conquer whole nations and bring down the leaders of those nations. Think about the nations that are being sucked dry today and the lies that are being kept from the people as they (we) are being robbed by the ancestors of our ancestor’s slave masters. Their history is the lie they tell their own people it’s the lie they tell the whole world. Do you really want to continue to believe such madness? Are you mad? Of course you are as well you should be having been brought up under a veil of deceit, theft, mistreatment, abuses on many levels and genocide as the basis of this existence. Know that everything is build on lies and deception and what we experience today is part of that pyramid of lies and deception. Now do you really believe anything they say or do? Do you believe a “President” is really what they use to rule this country and annihilate most of the world’s people?
Do you believe that the ruthless people who rule this nation would allow a “black” man to represent them if they didn’t have a reason to do so?
Whatever the case, we are all such fools and it’s sad because we have been born this way and conditioned this way, and most us will never be able to see things as they really are! Not anyone in this country can see things as they really are. None but a ruthless committed few!

What people need to realize is that Obama is just the President that happens to be “colored”. If people would just google this question, “Who is the first black President?”, then you will see for yourself. Once we as americans get the right answer, then we will all be okay and well informed.

Because we were never taught, WE NEED TO DO OUR OWN RESEARCH, before we go off and start saying things that is hiding the truth and confusing the masses.

As a man who lived during the civil rights period, Morgan is too old to bring up such a stupid non-issue. Bi-racial is not a race. He obviously doesn’t like President Obama and is trying in some way to distance African American supporters from him. Obama can’t run on black issues. Remember he’s working with a predominantly white Congress. Do you really think he would ever get a special “colored folks’ unemployment bill passed by those racists. Let’s get real! What makes you think Congress would support any legislation he might propose for addressing black unemployment. Maybe he should do it just to prove that it wouldn’t work. Then y’all anti-Obamaites would have something else to say.

Morgan, I think we should start lining up all successful black and white mixed individuals and use your category ‘mixed races’ to identify them regardless of what they consider themselves to be.

It seems that we are looking for a hook to hang our hat on. It is a fact that the president and a lot of us have Semitic roots as well as evidence of Hamitic genes. He just happens to know his origins. The Chinese will tell you that their first leader was a black man. It is historical fact. As Silvio Berlusconi said, referring to President Obama, “He has a nice tan.” Wizard G you do not have to be ruthless to know the devices of The god of this world. He invented lies and is the father of it. Would you expect anything less from the governments that operate under his influence. He is also called The Destroyer. There is a change in administration coming that will shock even the ruthless committed few who think that they know everything. Before war there is always a leap forward in military technology. If we want a turn around in our future of Black America we need all of our so called black leafers scholars etc. To stop letting hip hop dictate life to our children because whether you agree wit me or not our kids are dropping out of schools at an alarming ratr to the streets & strips clubs cause of what they’re hearing from there favorite recording artist….so if those of you who claim to have it so on the ball or consider your selves to be so intelligent can’t recognise the fact that we are loosing our children by the age of 13 & figure how to bridge that gap we will forever will continue to spin our wheels cause history has taught us that they always pick us off individualy but as a one unit recognizable force all in the same accord on the same page has to be respected & heard..

What many of this and the last generation doesn’t understand is that when Obama was born and grew up there wasn’t any such thing as “biracial” in this country. He grew up when “one drop of black blood made you black.” So, he grew up when he and many, many other so-called “mixed” blacks were being called only black, because that was the only race you would be considered as then.

So if he was born and raised under the label black, and I’m sure he was, that was ….and still is, the race he knows himself to be. His mother, like Halle Berry’s mother, probably told him this at that time in U.S. history.

Whether Obama is the first Black president, or mixed race reminds me of health reform: penalty or tax? These absurd distinctions miss major points. With health care reform, people CHOOSE whether to pay the money to the IRS by choosing not to have health insurance. Neither penalty nor tax point out this truth – that it’s a payment people may choose to make if they choose not to have health insurance. Regarding Obama, it’s obvious that he is seen as Black, and that people disregard “mixed race” and it is also clear that he is the offspring of a white American and a man from Kenya – no slave ancestors. Far more important, his position in history is one that will probably result in him having made some changes and surviving for a second term by not alienating the Big Money backers he answers to. What he will do when he’s in that second term – if there is one – is the big mystery.

Mr Freeman has obviously spent too much time with Whites – he is now talking as a House-Negro mouthpiece.

President Obama’s parentage is only relevant in an Institutionally-Racist country like the US in terms of its Black side not its White. The President is not judged by his White parent but by his Black; proven by the fact that President Obama is the only US President whose skin color was an electoral issue. (George Washington’s ownership of 216 slaves while in office was not, you will no doubt recall.)

The only thing that matters to Whites is that President Obama is not White and therefore can be treated as an inferior in their minds. Whites divide the world between White and non-White, not between White, Brown, Yellow, Black and Red – White supremacy is not that taxonomically-sophisticated as exemplified by the KKK not making such distinctions during a lynching.

Mr Freeman is perfectly well aware of this but pretends that his n**i genetic theorizing (mixed-race is a political category, not a genetic one) will help him fight his deep-seated fear of Whites.

A “Black” Man, A Moor, John Hanson Was the First President of the United States! 1781-1782 A.D.??? George Washington was really the 8th President of the United States! George Washington was not the first President of the United States. In fact, the first President of the United States was one John Hanson. Don’t go checking the encyclopedia for this guy’s name – he is one of those great men that are lost to history. If you’re extremely lucky, you may actually find a brief mention of his name. The new country was actually formed on March 1, 1781 with the adoption of The Articles of Confederation. This document was actually proposed on June 11, 1776, but not agreed upon by Congress until November 15, 1777. Maryland refused to sign this document until Virginia and New York ceded their western lands (Maryland was afraid that these states would gain too much power in the new government from such large amounts of land). Once the signing took place in 1781, a President was needed to run the country. John Hanson was chosen unanimously by Congress (which included George Washington). In fact, all the other potential candidates refused to run against him, as he was a major player in the revolution and an extremely influential member of Congress. As the first President, Hanson had quite the shoes to fill. No one had ever been President and the role was poorly defined. His actions in office would set precedent for all future Presidents. He took office just as the Revolutionary War ended. Almost immediately, the troops demanded to be paid. As would be expected after any long war, there were no funds to meet the salaries. As a result, the soldiers threatened to overthrow the new government and put Washington on the throne as a monarch. All the members of Congress ran for their lives, leaving Hanson as the only guy left running the government. He somehow managed to calm the troops down and hold the country together. If he had failed, the government would have fallen almost immediately and everyone would have been bowing to King Washington. In fact, Hanson sent 800 pounds of sterling siliver by his brother Samuel Hanson to George Washington to provide the troops with shoes. Hanson, as President, ordered all foreign troops off American soil, as well as the removal of all foreign flags. This was quite the feat, considering the fact that so many European countries had a stake in the United States since the days following Columbus. Hanson established the Great Seal of the United States, which all Presidents have since been required to use on all official documents. President Hanson also established the first Treasury Department, the first Secretary of War, and the first Foreign Affairs Department. Lastly, he declared that the fourth Thursday of every November was to be Thanksgiving Day, which is still true today.

The Articles of Confederation only allowed a President to serve a one year term during any three year period, so Hanson actually accomplished quite a bit in such little time. Six other presidents were elected after him – Elias Boudinot (1783), Thomas Mifflin (1784), Richard Henry Lee (1785), Nathan Gorman (1786), Arthur St. Clair (1787), and Cyrus Griffin (1788) – all prior to Washington taking office. So what happened? Why don’t we ever hear about the first seven Presidents of the United States? It’s quite simple – The Articles of Confederation didn’t work well. The individual states had too much power and nothing could be agreed upon. A new doctrine needed to be written – something we know as the Constitution. And that leads us to the end of our story. George Washington was definitely not the first President of the United States. He was the first President of the United States under the Constitution we follow today. And the first seven Presidents are forgotten in history

Americans may be unique in that many still ascribe to the One Drop theory or belief, but I think what may be continuously overlooked is the fact that personal racial identity extends BEYOND a dusty doctrine called the one-drop rule as well. Some people of mixed bloodlines identify as Black come about from their own personal preferences and experiences. An individual’s self image is much more complex than how many would like to believe.
As I said, though mixedrace people are not their own race. I don’t understand how any biracial person can think that in the first place. TO BE A RACE OF PEOPLE, there needs to be quite a few socio-economic factors in play, and mixedrace people, at least here in the US have none of them except wishful thinking.

The fact is that mixedrace people of Black heritage are still often regarded as part of their minority grouping, and also often encounter racism because of it. A Biracial person can try to think of themselves as a seperate race, but they’ll soon discover that there is no such thing-the Black community is where unity and cohesion lies. Biracial does not signify any kind of formal racial grouping but merely a term for racial mixture. Black people ARE MIXED AND MIXED PEOPLE ARE BLACK. The roots interlock and intertwine throughout the passages of time and generations. Jeez, if it can be said that a Black person is only someone who is entirely Black in genetics, that would discount nearly everyone from the Black community.

If you wish to debate the issue, DiversityInc. has a piece that describes the background on six presidents. Amazon.com has a poster that depicts them-Jefferson, Jackson, Harding, Coolidge,
Eisenhower and Lincoln. It is the one-drop rule that makes this real. Of course, you can reject the one-drop rule. Eventually you will reject the notion of the importance of the separation of humankind into small boxes.

I am sure that Morgan Freeman does understand what he has said. He uses the term mixed-race. The concept of r-a-c-e was discredited by scholars some 100 years ago. It would be great if Freeman became contemporary and not live in the past.

Talking about race and ancestors is always a challenge for all of us. But the truth is that if man originated out of Africa, then every so called “white” person has just as many roots in Africa as black people. The labels we use to describe each other have more to do with socio-political-economic separation than biology/genetics. The real blue bloods are the Africans, our ancestors, and people in the US better wake up soon to this realization before China consumed the riches of our real home–Africa!

I find it strange that most people still fill that everyone is mixed with something if there were part of the slave trade. The white man was not that good that they could spread their seed everywhere.

You go south and see some of the purple people who are still there. If we were mixed I would like to know with what. My father always told us there is no white blood in his veins. Barack Obama is no more the first black president than was Warren G. Harding, who also possessed both black and white blood. Which, according to some is supposed to make them black because black blood is supposed to be dominant over the bloods of all other races. Black people are the strongest of all races, and the original people of the earth. Which extends far back before that 6,000 years ago couple called Adam and Eve lie in the Bible, who where NOT the first people on the earth. What I am curious about, and would like for Dr. Boyce to find out and tell us, is what Obama’s birth certificate says about his race, if it has it on there. Forget that where he was born business, does the document say anything about his race? Some birth certificates use to long ago, but I don’t know about now. And if it does, I will bet any of you that it does not say B-L-A-C-K . Because the father was not there, and do you really think that his mother and white grandparents would list him as black? — Rev. O.K. President Obama is not “black”. Who cares! The important thing is that he was able to appeal to the majority of Americans to elect him as the POTUS. The problem is this, in general terms, there are some blacks who hate or dislike the President, specifically because he is not a direct descendant of slaves and has no connection to the civil rights movement.that neither he nor his African ancestors were participants.
Morgan Freeman and other blacks, it seems would be comfortable if it was, say, Jesse Jackson, the Rev. Al Sharpton or the incredible Herman Cain was in the White House (note: the Late Mrs. Shirley Chisholm was also a member of this group). They are direct descendants of slaves. President Obama is not like them. Of course, his father is African (no connection to slavery or the civil rights movement. According to these people, for anyone to identifies him/herself as a black person he/she MUST be a descendant of slaves. (But wait! I am a descendant of slaves but I certainly do not identify myself as black. Others do. I was born in Africa and have lived in this country for forty years. I identify myself as American).
IF HAVING ONE OF YOUR PARENTS IDENTIFIED AS WHITE DISQUALIFIES YOU FROM BEEN “BLACK” THEN MILLIONS OF BLACKS ARE INDEED NOT BLACK (AS THEY WOULD WANT TO IDENTIFY THEMSELVES OR AS THEY ARE FORCED DO BY SOCIETY) BUT “MULTI-RACIAL, AS MR. FREEMAN WOULD WANT YOU DO.
The word “multi-racial” is a feel-good term for most, if not all blacks who identify one of their parents as white. They cannot identify themselves as white because this racist society does not believe that they are PURE enough to be identified as white. The word “black” is a default term for descendants of slaves IN THE UNITED STATES. Today, around the world, the word provides the primary description of anyone who lives in a country where whites are the dominant population or are a subset of the population, and is not white and also a product of a mixed-race relationship where one of the parents is of African descent.
An African, both of whose parents are black certainly do not identify him/herself as “black” unless that individual resides in a country where there are white people or people who do not look like him/her. In there home country they identify themselves by the tribe of therir ancestors and as, for example, Ghanaian, Liberian, Ethiopian, Somalian, Tanzanian, etc.etc.
Blacks in the United States do not have tribes. SO SETTLE FOR JUST BEEN AMERICAN. It would save you from all the head/heartaches. Forget about all this “black” “Multi-racial”, “mulato”, I have Indian blood” nonesense. You are an American as any white American. You may “LOOK” different from a “white” American but you are still an American whose people fought and died for this country and whose blood, sweat and tears contributed to building this country. SO, PLEASE GIVE PRESIDENT OBAMA A BREAK. HE IS AN AMERICAN THAT IS WHY HE DOES NOTHAVE A BLACK AGENDA AS YOUR GOOD PROFESSOR AND OTHERS WOULD LIKE. HE HAS AN AMERICAN AGENDA: JOBS FOR ALL AMERICANS, HOUSING FOR ALL AMERICANS, AFFORDABLE HEALTH CARE FOR ALL AMERICANS, ETC, ETC. MORGAN FREEMAN, PROFESSOR WATKINS, TRAVIS, CORNEL AND THE REST WANT HIM TO BE UN-AMERICAN SO THAT THE “OTHER” AMERICANS CAN CRUCIFY HIM. PRESIDENT OBAMA IS AN AMERICAN. CASE CLOSED. Accept him and be proud of him as a President trying to do his best to do the right thing for ALL Americans, not just for “black” people. Oh! as for wanting him to get people out of jail/prison, HE CANNOT DO THAT. My suggestion: join Rev. Al Sharpton and other goog leaders to fight injustice in the country. And, for your information, there is injustice in Africa, the majority of which countries are populated by “blacks” and ruled by “blacks”. So this injustice thing is a human trait — that is, it does not belong exclusively to white people.
PLEASE ACCEPT OUR BROTHER AS ONE OF US–Americans.

Morgan Freeman is right; Obama is not black. Although he is Afrikan American. Most black people who are decendents of slaves are not mixed with white blood. If they were there wouldn’t be so many very dark skinned people in the u.s. or the islands.
And why is it that whenever this subject is broached black folks just love to talk about all the Indian and European bloodlines they have. It’s really very insulting, and as concerning that one drop rule; whites made that up to say that one drop of black or
African blood meant that a white was contaminated, but black folks act like it’s a badge of honour!
Sheesh! we still got a long ways to go!!!

You people are forgetting or neglecting that the mixing of blacks and whites didn’t start on the shores of this country or continent. It started in the forts and slave ports in Africa and continued on the slave ships during the long trips to the shores of America. History records that over 33% of African women were impregnated by white slave overseers BEFORE they arrived in America. It’s devastating to think of African women having been raped like that, but historical truth is historical truth.

You can try to hide it, deny it, but it’s historical truth. And it continued on the plantations, down through the generations after they arrived here. That is how so many brown, yellow and “offwhite” African-Americans came about. It continues today, mostly voluntarily and mostly by black men and white women pairings.

Accordance to white society, that an once of black blood makes you a black person, if you look black then your black. I understand that he is mixed in race, but everyone considered him as a black man. He looks more black than white, so he is considered as a black man. Not matter what people say, he is considered a black man. There were other Presidents who were of mixed race, but they could pass for white and they did, thats why we don’t know of any other Black Presidents before Barack Obama. They didn’t clam the slavery blood that was in them because it was easier to be white than black. So Im very proud of President Obama, because he ist he first president that looks like us. I don’t care what no one say, as far as Im concerned, He is the first black President for me.

He’s not correct! What is not enough that President Obama’s father was born in Africa? You have generations of black that are descendants of white slave owners that went ont to marry within the black community, would that mean that they’re not black. I’ve been waiting since I was born to have a President with a vowel at the end of his name and it turns out NOT to be an Italian. I think Mario Cuomo was out closest shot. Maybe his son Andrew, but i doubt it. Anyway the Presidents features are black. Do think Derek Jeter thinks of himself as bi-racial. Just because he looks more white doesn’t make him not black. He dates white women so it is safe to say that his kids would be more white but if by genetics the children come out black would or wouldn’t they be considered black ? My wife is mostly of Irish descetn and I’m all Italian. Are my children Bi-Ethnic?

My friend and I have been arguing about this since 2008. I have never felt that Obama was the first Black president, and as time has gone by, I really feel this sentiment even stronger. I supported him heavily in the election and I will support him again. I never needed him to be Black, I just needed him to be a good president to the nation, including African Americans. He is biracial and as such his experience is as a bi-racial person, not a person who has identified as African American before we had mass immigration and are now trying to redefine what that has historically meant in this country. I don’t see why people get so angry when a Black person says this. It acknowledges the totality of who he is, not just one side. I raised two bi-racial children when my brother and his wife could not do so. Their life experiences were different than mine culturally and socially, although genetically we are similar. Even though they were raised by an African American family, they were never really whole persons until they grew up enough to embrace all of who they are and I encouraged this strongly. Obama being mixed-raced and being literally raised by whites does not lessen my support for him nor his humanity. Neither did the fact that he initially came out saying that he is different from African Americans (not other African Americans) due to the fact that he did not have a slave legacy — his mother being white and his father being from Kenya. I immediately thought when he said this, your slave legacy could be on your mother’s side. Because she is white, does not mean that you do not share a slave legacy. Obama has, in my opinion, demonstrated his lack of support for and discomfort with the African American community multiple times during his tenure. I follow policy, not personality and the policy side has been greatly lacking with respect to African Americans; and where it does apply has been overall devastating. Frankly, if having a Black president means being ignored politically and socially, and treated as society’s step-children, then frankly, I’d rather have a good, progressive candidate in office, despite his or her race or gender, who is committed to solving the matters that really matter to our community. Right now, I do not believe that we have that… We are also without strong leaders during this period, to hold the president accountable. Peace.

Morgan Freeman’s comments I believe were from a factual stand point of biology not racial identity. Notwithstanding, one must also consider the podium of life from which one speaks. For Dr. King and others subjected to speak to racist elites from the outside it was easier to keep the plight of African Americans as a single issue comingaled with the inclusion of other’s plight who joined in our struggle. However, President Obama, has to speak from the inside and find a balance that allows him to insure the door is left open for others on the outside to get inside where their voices can be heard with votes on bills that matter to us all. The relevant question becomes why are we still shouting from the outside condeming who has made it inside, instead of working to get to the inside where we through our collective votes on the House floor and Senate floor can help him. After all it is not because he has not tried to help his people and others (his job) rather in many instances he didn’t have the votes. So what will now do, lynch him because he could not do it alone? The Executive Branch of government is only one of three. Often in our community we are looking for a savior to come to our rescue while we excuse ourselves from the process and reject our own responsibility. Jesus Chirst is the only one who could change history by himself, the rest of humanity, needs the rest of humanity to step up and become engaged not enraged. There is much more I certainly would have love to have seen accomplished, notwithstanding, I can’t disregard President Obama’s efforts nor the things accomplished that would not have happened under a different Administration. When enough people with right hearts, right minds, right motivations and right purpose make it inside and maintain their integrity, then maybe we will have the collective will to truly change America. Everyone shouting change, is not also assuming responsibility for the change they say they want!

    Just thinking out loud!

Unless you are a light-skinned African, you will not escape racism by heading off to Brazil. Brazil but I conducted research 20 years ago under a Brazilian professor who challenged my thinking on Race. If you were to take a moment to study branqueamento, you too would question the wisdom of the move. Branqueamento is a Portuguese word that equates to whitening. The underlying concept is that you only marry persons lighter than oneself so that one day your Clan will accrue the benefits of whiteness.

In other words Race matters there as well. Don’t assume that a high concentration of Africans equates to a higher level of consciousness.

Why not return home? You were not captured from Brazil, you were captured from the Continent. I married a Kenyan, Father from Jamaica and I have two U.S. born children. Every since Brother Robinson quit America, I have been wondering where should I go. If you find an island and have room-holler, I should be ready to retire in the next ten years.

I never suggested that Brazil doesn’t have race issues or even a higher level of consciousness. I’m planning to go there because I’m weary of America’s debt issues and the sinking economy here. This country is really a corporation and it appears to be a perpetual war machine. I’d rather give my future family a chance to NOT be a part of that.
Yes Obama and his fellowship of unquestioning supporters are annoying as well but I’m not stupid enough to expect Brazil’s politics to be more honest.
It’s just that I’ve visited Brazil 3 times (loved it) and I’m currently learning Portuguese to one day move there. Mostly because of weather, culture and the lack of a military industrial complex. Still, I hate that they have a central bank as well.
I’ll look into branqueamento so I thank you for that.

You are not black. You are dark brown. Nobody is black and nobody is white. We are all somewhere in the middle. What makes someone black or white is ancestry or bloodline.

Black and White are ethnicities no colors. There are threee major bloodlines in America: African, Indian and European. We all mixed. So, what makes you blacker that the president? Morgan is sad. He does not know this.

If you call yourself black, you have white or indian ancestors and vice versa. If Morgan thinks that black is a distinct and separate race of people, he is just ignorant.

Who is Morgan Freeman to talk? He has been kissing Clint Eastwood’s “white” b**t for years. I have never viewed Morgan Freeman as a Black man. He has never spoken up for black people. Mr. Freeman probably should look more into his own ethnicity. I do believe that he is going to be surprise to find out that he is not 100% black. If every African American check their ethnic background everyone would probably be consider Mixed Race. An excellent book to read is Chemistry of the Blood. This book would give Mr. Freeman a better understanding of which parent blood determine the race of the child. Mr. Freeman it is the father blood. I am afraid Mr. Freeman as it has been recorded in the History Books Mr. Barack Obama is the first African American President of these United States of America. It seem as though the techniques Willie Lynch shared with the slave owners is still hanging around under the big oak tree.

On 60 minutes he asked Mike Wallace to “call him Morgan instead of a black man” and has called for the elimination of Black History Month. He told a reporter in Mississippi (where he lives) that he does not want to be called African American because he’s “too long here (America) to be trying to identify with some other country.” Morgan has–he thinks–transcended race and he believes all we have to do is forget about racism and I guess become as rich and famous as he is and all racism will disappear. And the proof of his ignorance is in his statements. He cannot identify with Africa because he knows nothing of his history. He, my friends, is fully acculturated to being an American.
