Mitt Romney’s Tax Plan Raises Taxes For Over Two Million African-American Households
Earlier today, Kulture Kritic posted an article entitled “Mitt Romney Courts Black Vote at NAACP”. In that article, Romney’s senior adviser, Tara Wall, said, “If elected by a majority this November, President Romney will be a leader to all. Speaking to members of the nation’s oldest civil rights organization and establishing a dialogue with black voters, communicating his record of achievement and solutions for fixing a broken system of unfulfilled promises is paramount.”
Fine. But research indicates that blacks crossing over to Romney would be a bad financial move since Romney’s tax plan would result in a tax hike for over two million African-American households, according to the Center for American Progress Action Fund:
If Mitt Romney wins the presidential election in November, many African American families will see their taxes go up, while 100 percent of millionaires will get a tax cut. The infographic below shows just how one-sided Romney’s tax plan would be.
Mitt Romney can, of course, offer African Americans platitudes about why the G.O.P. is good for them, but numbers don’t lie. This chart indicates that Romney is more interested in funneling tax dollars to the rich than offering tax cuts which help middle class and poor people, those who are disproportionately African-American.
If Mitt Romney is serious about winning over even a minority of African-American voters in the fall, perhaps he should consider rewriting his tax plan in such a way that it actually benefits African-Americans. Everything else is just talk.
