Jobs Report Shows Surge in Black Unemployment

Although the overall jobless rate for America remained steady at 8.2 percent, the jobless rate for African Americans rose almost a full percentage point.

This from CNN:

The unemployment rate for blacks rose to 14.4% from 13.6% in May, the Labor Department reported Friday. That’s a sharp contrast to the white unemployment rate, which stayed put at 7.4%, and the Hispanic rate, which held at 11%.

This trend is not a new one, as the black unemployment rate has been roughly double that of whites since the government started tracking the figures in 1972.

Blacks are suffering worse than Hispanics and whites in the job market, and still, no plan to fix it.

Black people have always needed the Gov to level the playing field yet this Obama administration has choosen to operated as if the playing field is already level. Never mind all the evidence to the contrary which show deep divisions in fair treatment, consideration, assets and the like thoughout this society. Obama is much more concern about his image as seen by White people than his ability to help Black people.

Correct, moptop. It is very disappointing to read these unemployment numbers among black americans while our president ignores his largest constituency. Institutional racism is very real despite the gains of 50 years after the civil rights movement.

It is so much easier to blame and look for scapegoats. I am black, but I am also an immigrant. I grew up in the US, but I can see a big difference between me and today’s African Americans. African Americans are so focused on racism, they have learned to be helpless, whiny, and needy. Black Americans are always looking for the government to do everything without thinking of the taxes that are needed to take care of those things. I teach many Hispanics who are focused on having their own businesses and helping other Hispanics. African Americans need to start doing that again.

Those same whiney, helpless, weak Black folk opened the doors for black immigrants such as yourself could even come to this country. These same weak people knocked down those walls of racialism and american-style apartheid so that YOU
can be all that you can be so to speak. Read the 2010 US Census summary reports on the Black population to see the record number of Black Businesses, the record numbers of Black students attending and graduating from colleges, etc.
Finally, I am a proud native-born Black American who spent 28yrs in the US military, put a daugther through college and graduate school and who is proud to say that I haved traveled among the remarkable peoples among the peoples of Africa and the Carribbean

African-Americans need to stay in school and work towards the degree that pays. Some don’t complete highschool and most have stopped going on towards a higher degree.

Get into a historic black college and work towards higher learning. Most entry level positions now require a certificate or diploma of higher education. We are falling behind as a race.

Wow Monique, your comments are a bit irresponsible; however, I don’t totally disagree with you because there are a large number of African-American that are “helpless, whiny and needy, but they are the minority. The majority of African-Americans are hardworking, independent and capable. The interesting thing that I’ve found is that the ones you are referring to rarely complain because they’re comfortable in their situation, and believe it or not most don’t want anything better or different. onmyway2012,Josep and william “Rick” Collins came down on you pretty hard but I have a question for them because they all seem to be complaining about what the President and the Government isn’t doing for African-Americans to bring down the unemployment rate. I would like to know from one or all of them what do they think the President or Government should or could do to bring down the high unemployment rate among African-Americans? He presented a “jobs bill” to Congress that way stopped cold, He’s been trying to raise taxes on the very rich and he can’t get that done; this Administration has deported 30% more illegal immigrants than any previous Administration. African-American unemployment has always been close to double that of Whites since they started keeping count. What is it about this President (other than he’s Black) that’s different from the other 43 before him?

      James
I’d like a shot at responding to your questions on what can Obama do to decrease Black unemployment. First lets remember he had a majority in congress for 2 years until the mid term elections. Where was his call for a jobs bill when the opportunity to get it was available? Only after he lost his dem majority did he play up his political show piece a watered down jobs bill that he knew was certain to fail. Lets not forget he bargin with the GOP to keep the Bush tax cuts in place for a meager extension of unemployment benefits and by the way very few Black people got unemployment benefits because you had to have been working. The 99% didn’t qualify for any extension of benefits.
Ok lets see what he could do now. 1st he could give a prime time speech sighting the urgency of putting people back to work. Hype it up just like they do when they want to go to war.
Next he could put in place a force reduction and order troops home which would place further demands on Congress to get vets back into the work force not to mention the money it would save. 3rd he could Threaten to veto all bills including emergency bills unless a jobs bill was in place first. Next by executive order he could for 90 days order all federal departments to hire temps. This last act would certainly push out a jobs bill. By the way it is a lawful act and the Congress or judicial branch must allow it though for those 90 days if the president choose to use his emergency powers

First of all I can appreciate you taking the time to at least attempt to answer my questions but quite frankly the things you cited are a bit unrealistic, and here’s why. Look back at the first two years and prioritize the events. The stimulus, natural disasters, the war in Iraq and Afghanistan, bringing this country bringing this country back from the brink of a total economic collapse, healthcare for “all Americans”. “The bargain he made with the GOP”? You sound as if Blacks all of a sudden started losing jobs and quit working when he became President. It was because of the President and only because of the President that unemployment benefits were extended at all, so that argument doesn’t hold water. “primetime speech sighting the urgency of putting people back to work”. First of all, what would that accomplish if nothing could be done? Secondly, every time the President speaks he’s talking about jobs and putting people back to work. I don’t know about you but I’m tired of empty promises when I know nothing can be done. “threaten to veto all bills including emergency bills unless a jobs bill was in place first”. So in other words do what the Republicans are doing which will continue slow or block any economic recovery. “next by executive order he could for 90 days order all federal departments to hire employees”. First of all, where will the money come from to pay these employees, secondly, should these people just be Black? What jobs will they do and what happens after 90 days? Doesn’t make any sense; totally unrealistic. “the last act would certainly push out a jobs bill”. You need to rethink all of this because two things; they’re all totally unrealistic and would never happen even if the President wanted it to happen, and secondly they didn’t answer my questions. Let’s be real for a moment. The President can’t get anything through Congress that benefits “all Americans”, so what chance do you think that anything directly affecting or benefiting African-Americans will get through? The biggest problem I have with the Presidents critics is that they somehow expect him to do the impossible.

    I see it Elizabeth’s way.

We can create our own jobs!

Check it, immigrants take the least paying jobs and they stick together and pool their money together until they can afford the bigger prizes: house, car, education, hiring their children and sending then off for higher education etc.

Many have psychologically poisoned their minds by saying that they cannot do this nor that when the fact is they might not have even tried!

Stop the blame game, unemployment is unemployment.

Not black, not African American, not presidential.

Monique raised valid points, those of you who saw her as being anti-African American, missed the whole point.

Immigrants come to America with a whole different mindset, to do better than where they come from.

Not thinking because one is born here that they are entitled to lay back, chill and have everything handed to them on a silver or gold platter.

Often, professional immigrants come here and are set back due to the laws around education and they end up taking demeaning jobs until they pay money to be re-educated in their field and prove their ability to speak, read and write English.

The high black unemployment rate is truly disturbing, however, it is foolish to solely think President Obama can correct something that goes back several administrations. It is also foolish to think that the President of the United States, while a black man, would be able to solely focus on the issues of the black community (which is not monolithic in values, needs, culture, economics, education, etc) and not on the pressing needs of the country that faced him before he was even in office. Yes, he did have a majority when he came into office, but he also had an economic recession and obstructionist republicans.

What do WE do about this? I, along with other forward thinking blacks have determined to spend our dollars with other black businesses, something we can humbly learn from our immigrant brethren (and I am descended from West Indians). Yes, American born blacks have had a history of some really awful things happen to us in this country, however, I dare any of us to trade places with our African born blacks who have had to deal with the deadly enemy that looks like them – genocide? gang rape of little girls? murder of entire villages? Get real, stop complaining, stop feeding the consumerism animal ($200 shoes? that could have paid for a course at a community college, funded a book scholarship for a college student, purchased a domain name and website along with ordering business cards for a new business, if spread to just 10 businesses, it could have given a cash boost if everyone in line who bought those shoes did a “cash mob” at a local black business that is employing black people.

We have it within our hands to correct this, but to be honest, we must correct some things in our own house first.

Yes, he did have a majority when he came into office, but he also had an economic recession and obstructionist republicans.

Cut the bull Smith. Congress passes Obama’s $787 billion stimulus package. Unemployment subsequently increased because Obama rushed this misguided package thru Congress to focus his attention on healthcare. In other words this president ignored cancer (the economy) to focus on a headache (health insurance reform). That’s brilliant!!!!

Per the virtually worthless U3 the Afrikan American unemployment rate which was 12.5 percent when Obama was sworn in; climbed to a high of 16.7 percent; decreased for several months, and now is rising again.

Of course, all of that is the fault of George W. Bush and the obstructionist republicans. Obama’s incompetence has nothing to do with it.

In American politics loyal constituents are supposed to be rewarded for their support, but the most critical issue facing Afrikan Americans goes unaddressed. When will Afrikan Americans learn that blind loyalty pays no dividends beyond symbolism.

I totally agree with moptop in that the trend by whites & some blacks who have made it is we as African Americans dont need help any more. Now as for our brother mr. Obama he does seem to be much more concerned about his image as seen by White people/historians than his ability to help the common everyday regular hard working class & poor n struggling Black people of this nation maybe that may change we must continue to have both.
