Huey P. Newton’s Doctoral Dissertation Now Available Here For Free

People have a lot to say about Huey Newton, both good and bad, right and wrong, but what often goes unmentioned is that he was an intellectual who earned his bachelor’s degree from U.C. Santa Cruz in 1974.  Newton also earned a Ph.D. in history of consciousness. His doctoral dissertation was entitled, “War on the Panthers: A Study of Oppression in America.”

An excerpt from the dissertation’s introduction:

It is logical that Oakland, California, should be the focus of hostile government actionsagainst the Party because it is the place where the Party was founded, and it is the centerof its organizational strength. In discussing Party leaders, including myself, and events inwhich they were involved, there has been a persistent temptation to write personally andemotionally. Individuals, with all their strengths and weaknesses, make significantdifferences in the outcome of political struggles; however, their roles are too oftenromanticized, clouding an understanding of the political forces propelling them intostruggle. I have tried to maintain an objectivity consistent with scholarly standards byplacing the roles of the involved personalities in proper political perspective. To aid inthis effort, I will be referred to throughout this study in the third person. This dissertationis then, by necessity, illustrative, not exhaustive; a history in brief, not a biography of theBlack Panther Party [BPP]

What is perhaps most significant about [this study] is that it suggests how much we stilldo not know. How many people’s lives were ruined in countless ways by a governmentintent on destroying them as representatives of an “enemy” political organization? What”tactics” or “dirty tricks” were employed, with what results? Perhaps we shall never knowthe answers to these questions, but this inquiry about the BPP and the federal governmentwill hopefully help us in our search for “the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth.”

If you can read about Rihanna and Chris Brown, then you can certainly take some time out of your day to read this wonderful and instructive piece of history.

I have nothing but respect for the Black Panthers and all the rest of the black organisations that are ready to put it on the line for black folks. Its just too bad that they,re are,nt any replies on this topic here.I guess black folks would rather read about Rihanna and Chris Brown ,they would rather fill their heads with all that dumb a*s reality c**p than get some valuable insight from a man that stood up for the black community when it came to getting justice for black folks.Nah black folks would rather read about the coons and the rest of the jackasses making fools of themselves to appease white folks.

If you want to hide knowledge from Black people, put it in a book. This man is my hero. He and his comrads made the ultimate sacrifice. Now we just sacrifice each other. Many of us are just lost…..

Huey’ dissertation has a great deal of this country’ history and how if a new administration were to be elected, it would return us to the early 20th century, ie. labor being destroyed by wealthy men. His scarifice has no bearing on the youth today. I sometimes believe they don’t have the concentration span to absorb this or anything with 3 or more syllables. Thanks Dr. Boyce, I loved reading it.
