Just Call Her a Hero, Veteran Loses Both Legs, but Works for Gold in the Paralympics

As an advocate for wounded servicemen around the world, Kari Miller is heading to London to go for the gold in the Paralympics.

“I used to serve my country in the US Army, then I was hit by a drunk driver and lost my legs but that didn’t change a thing because I still serve my country, I just wear a different uniform,” Miller stated to NBC.

After her accident and the loss of both her legs, she signed up with wheelchair basketball.  When the season was over, a friend suggested she sign up for sitting volleyball to keep in shape during the off-season and she’s never looked back.

“I loved the extra challenge. The mental speed required to make decisions and strategize,” Miller said.

Using her tragedy as a tool to positively impact others, Miller hopes to encourage other service men and women in her situation to go out and become physically active again.

“You don’t have time to sit around and ‘woe is me, I can’t do this’.  You actually have the opportunity to say, ‘Oh, I can do this now and I can still do this,” Miller said. “For me, being physically injured is more about figuring out ‘how’ you’re going to do the things you want to do, not ‘if’ you can,”

Miller is currently attending the University of Central Oklahoma where she’s taking biology and veterinary science classes.  She is also trying to help others by being a USOC Paralympics Mentor for other service members.
