I would not have ask for the scholarship to be return if I was envolved especally one in the name of Dr King. A reminder to Mr John Charles white people own or control 95% of everything in this country, don’t know what happen to poor whites in appalachia. Please don’t confuse efforts to eradicate some of mean and hateful pratices of the past, that kept blacks serville for most of our stay here with scholorships for minorties only.

Mr. John Charles, the scholarships are set aside for minorities in order to off-set discrimination AGAINST minorities. One could argue the that whole world is set aside for white people and due to systemic and historic wrongs, the minority scholarships were created. But don’t worry: there ARE scholarships for white students if they are willing to go to historically black colleges and universities. At those schools, they can get a scholarship for being white. I suspect you already know this though, Mr. Charles. If I’m not an educator and I know this, you probably do. If not, well guess what: we learn something new every day, right?

Actually, there are NO scholarships in the US that are set aside for whites only, although there are for every other ethnicity. As a High School teacher for 17 years, I have been asked by many students how that is legal.

I am African American and understand the need for scholarships to be available for persons of color, however I have concerns about the actions taken in this matter.

What message do we send our young people when we have awarded someone of a different color a scholarship, then discourage him from accepting it because of his color?

Every year we celebrate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., but we have yet to realize or understand his dream/vision. He talked about a time in our nation when we would no longer judge anyone by the color of one’s skin, but by the content of their character. Wouldn’t it be a great teaching moment to demonstrate what Dr. King was saying by not only allowing, but encouraging this young man to keep the scholarship?
