Dr. Boyce Video: Why We Must Support the Inmates in Georgia’s Prison Protest
From Dr. Boyce Watkins:
I spoke with Rev. Kenny Glasgow recently about the unspeakable things happening to prison inmates in the state of Georgia. Many of these men are being tortured and beaten nearly to death as a result of a peaceful protest they launched back in 2010. Some of them have been kept in solitary confinement for a year and a half, denied access to food, showers, exercise and all the other things they need in order to survive.
Even if one owes a debt to society, the debt should not be paid like this. As a man who has had relatives subjected to this kind of torture as a result of mistakes they made in youth, I stand with Rev. Glasgow and his coalition in fighting this horrific problem. I hope you will support us as we seek to find humane ways to allow men and women to be rehabilitated and return to their communities as productive husbands and fathers. We must declare an end to the New Jim Crow of mass incarceration.

OMG!!!!! This is awful!!!
Can you imagine a Romney Administration dealing with this issue in 4 months?
AMAZINGGRACE, can you imagine that the CURRENT president didn’t keep his promise regarding the prison system. It’s been almose 4 yrs. Obama could have done a lot regarding those in prison, but he hasn’t.
The laws of Ga Prison should have been long ago fixed we must stand up. They have been ignored long ago.
This is bad, but maybe it will act as an incentive for our men and boys to shun jail, nothing else has worked.
Jail is not a Hip-Hop video, it is real life, when you get there it is to late.
I feel so bad for these men in these unbelievable conditions. Then I look at our communities and wonder why do we continually put ourselves in a position where this can be done to us??? Why will we get up in arms once “they” begin to mistreat us but we are so accepting of those in our community that we know are doing wrong and are headed down this road! Im not judeing…. I’m one of those people as well.
What can be done to help these men be treated humane?
Dr. Watkins,
Please give us information as to what we can do to help these inmate.
Well lets first begin with having the right person in the Oval Office. Our AG, Mr. E. Holder is a very effective individual. Thats why he is being singled-out and held in contempt of court because he is thorough. We have to “Unite and Think Right” about This Country and know, This is Our Country Too and stop letting these racist get away with murder….
I am not certain on what to say or how to feel about the issue, because several months ago, there was a forum on my campus at Clark Atlanta titled the Jim Crow and Mass Incarceration and I didn’t attend the forum because I felt as though, the reason why blacks out rank others in prison is because they do things that put them there. But, maybe there are things that factor into my feelings about this. However, the social issues have to be addressed if we want to keep blacks out of jail.
Lets 1st consider why these people are in prison before getting involved with this situation. Are these murderers, drug dealers, thiefs, rapists? I respect every man, but I will not support this. The bible says eye for eye and tooth for a tooth. We have bigger problems out here in the world. Housing, Jobs, Food and Education is my primary focus. I don’t think it’s fair to ignore the problems in our economy to assist what’s going on in prison systems. Our tax dollars is enough!
Butch,
God forbid you or someone in your family is wrongly convicted and gets caught up in the tangled web of an unreformed prison system. Haven’t you heard “There but for the grace of God go I?” Don’t you know that but for that grace, those men could be you? Love them as you would love yourself, Butch, and that love just might save YOU (or your family members) one day when you (or they) unexpectedly need it.
@ Butch,
1) Humanity should be a priority when we speak of rehabilitation or correctional facility.Anything otherwise equals hipocrisy and can as well sentence every prisoner to death.
2)Jesus came not to change the mosaic laws i.e Eye for an eye but to moderate them i.e Hit me on one side of my cheek, i turn you the other as well.
3)Poverty is the no. 1 reason why crime rate is high and guess what race is affected the most by it.So as you say, housing, jobs, food and EDUCATION is your primary focus,so is that the solution to all this. And let he without any fault i life cast the first stone.
Good day.
michael jackson was telling you they don’t really care about us…..black man black mail those our brothers in jail….america don’t really care about us….we got to support in one direction we can create billionaire’s if we work as one and got great leaders that can take care the money to put blacks to work….and the leader should not live better then the people he work for….we can buy the same car…the same close from the same people…that take diffrent close….pick one company
I think the lack of Housing, Jobs, Food and some say Education is the reason we have to sale drugs, steal or whatever it takes to get money to pay RENT not House Note. Besides every Black person born in this Country should remember hte History of GA, thats klan country and it’s a fact most prison guard through-out this country are klan or have klan viiews. And judgeing by some of these post I belieave there were and still are Blacks in the klan. Sence 1862 Blacks have lived under Anglo Law, what make you think, people who made hanging Blacks a public family event (with all smiles). After Sunday Service white families loved to see a n***a being hung in the public square. I say the first BBQ was at a public hanging. A now some black people think everybody in this country are treated the same. How many Asians do you see being locked up? Whites were sniffing cocain and smoking crack long before it was sold to Blacks but now that blacks sale crack not powder, they give us 40 yrs for position of 2 rocks, while whites and other races get probation for a kilo of coke. Blacks have been owed in this country, and the white people know it, but so-called Black leaders say we are owed but THEY want to control how and when WE get what is OWED to us. REPARATIONS is the key for us to get out of this h**l we’ve been put in. The whole crimiinal JUST US system needs tobe over turned, and allow only Black men and women to view eash case and release all inmates convicted of non-violent crimes, and the rest on a case by case basis. We have never controled our lives. We are and have always been a form of ENTERTAINMENT for white people. From Step & fetch-it to Jay-Z. h**l 1 even put it in his name Cedric the ____. When will we wake up and demand what is RIGHTFULLY OURS.
Slavery was not abolished, it was just toned down a bit. The prison system is just another way to keep us in CHAINS. Repair the damage. Reparations is the only way to repair the damage done by Slavery, Jim Crow, and now the War on Drugs (war on blacks) lol but it ain’t funny
Georgia Mississippi and even Florida are still the slave and Jim crow capitols of the world, I know, because I travel there quite often
I also live in Florida.
