Number of PhDs Receiving Gov’t Assistance Tripled From 2007 to 2010
Between 2007 and 2010, the percentage of people with a graduate degrees who were on food stamps or were receiving another kind of federal aid more than
doubled, reaching 360,000, according to the Chronicle of Higher Education,
In 2007, 9,776 people with PhD’s were receiving some kind of aid. In 2010, that number had more than tripled to 33,655. For people with master’s degrees, the number spiked from 101,683 to 293,029.
The Chronicle posits that the data is skewed since many professors are working, but they’re working as adjunct professors and are being paid so low that they seek out government help to buttress their income. An adjunct professor’s salary is certainly not enough in many cases where professors have family and are burdened by college debt. It is still the case though that those with college degrees, advanced or otherwise, are more likely to be employed than their peers.

This is sad news, but an ongoing issue for over the past 10 years. I understand receiving govt. assistance because as a student, I had to go on both assistance and go to the food bank every week to have enough food to eat. Do what you can to survive.
No surprises here. I was warned after college graduation to not even think about a Phd because you won’t get a job. I know many a Phd who left his wife and kids to relocate and take a lesser job in higher education. Plus most Phd positions are dominated by white males.
Master degrees are an even bigger waste of time. During the 1970′s and 1980′s blacks pursued them with success but mainly because the fields of education, social work, and government rewarded you with a promotion to the next pay grade. Today, corporate america does not care.
Today’s guaranteed winners appear to be law (selected areas), medicine, engineering (selected areas), and of course high finance.
Stop running your flipping mouth about what someone financial situation living on food stamps. That is confidential. The author problems on food stamps as well. First of all, all of you conservatives and dictators running things, you should invest in businesses with your 501c3 tax exempt applications, and create jobs, hire sufficient people to supervise on these jobs and folks will have work. Remove the discriminative jerks running these jobs as managers, and supervisors, keep on the payroll productive workers and people who are not calling in sick like all the rest. Do that, and many applications for food stamps will decrease. Stop lying about education is required for promotions and student loans will decrease. Look at the overall perspective rather than one side to build up your audience. , lean up your end, and professionals, students, and ordinary people can live the American dream.
