Holder to African American Leaders: ‘Sacred’ Right to Vote Under Attack
Attorney General Eric Holder told a council of African American church leaders Wednesday that the “sacred” right to vote is under assault nationwide,
according to ‘Politico’.
“In my travels across this country, I’ve heard a consistent drumbeat of concern from citizens, who – often for the first time in their lives – now have reason to believe that we are failing to live up to one of our nation’s most noble ideals,” Holder said in a speech before the Council of Black Churches.
Others, however, are worried that Holder’s Justice Department isn’t doing enough to put an end to disenfranchisement like the mass purging of eligible voters by Florida Governor Rick Scott.
Holder assured the church leaders that his office is “aggressively” working to protecting the right of blacks to vote, including challenging several state lawsuits that would overturn key provisions of the Voting Rights Act. This includes challenging strict new voter ID laws that strip away the guarantee of equal access to the ballot box in the 2012 election.
