Dr. Cornel West: ‘Obama is a Disastrous Response to a Catastrophe’

The Huffington Post recently caught up with Dr. Cornel West and asked him his opinion of both President Obama and Mitt Romney. Although West said Obama is a better choice than Romney, it wasn’t exactly a glowing endorsement.

“Mitt Romney is a catastrophic response to a catastrophe, whereas Obama is a disastrous response to a catastrophe. Is disaster better than catastrophe? Yes it is. I wish we had a third candidate who could actually do something, but we don’t at the moment,” West said.

Regarding President Obama’s drone policy, West said: ”The drones with the bombs killing innocent civilians needs to be taken very very seriously,” West said. “You can’t hide and conceal that. So when I think of foreign policy, I connect the drones on the one hand to the corruption and incompetence and inefficiency of the Karzai regime.”

“So I have a very very deep disagreement with the kind of U.S. foreign policy at the moment that Barack Obama is promoting,” West added.

Which Leaders Rock Our World? Drumroll, Please …

(April 23) — President Barack Obama is still the world’s most respected leader, according to a new six-country poll.

Released today by France 24 and Radio France Internationale, the Harris Interactive Poll asked 6,135 adults between the ages of 16 and 64 who live in the United States, Britain, France, Italy, Germany or Spain to name their favorite world leaders.

Seventy-seven percent of those surveyed chose Obama, which is one percentage point higher than when Harris Interactive asked the same question in November.

President Obama and the Dalai Lama rank at the top of a new poll measuring the world’s most popular leaders.

Close on his heels is the Dalai Lama, Tibet’s spiritual leader, who was mentioned by 75 percent of those polled. U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton came in third at 62 percent, and German Chancellor Angela Merkel was mentioned by 54 percent of respondents, good enough for fourth place.

Taken between March 31 and April 12, the poll found that Pope Benedict XVI still ranked as the seventh most popular leader, despite the ongoing revelations about s****l abuse in the Catholic Church.

On the flip side of the coin, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Libya’s Moammar Gadhafi and Chinese President Hu Jintao earned a collective thumbs-down as the world’s least popular leaders.

American Presidents have been winning those types of polls for years and years. Yes, George Bush was once on top of that list, too. And Clinton, George Sr., and Reagan, too. It has to do with familiarity. More people the world over have seem pictures of the US President than any other leader, and the US President gets direct media coverage every time there is a world-meeting of some sort (economic summits like G-7, and things like that). How many of us could name the President of Spain w/o looking it up first? What about Mexico, our next door neighbor? Ecuador?

A poll like the one you refer to will always favor the US President (and other prominent Americans).

Yep, Dr. West wants respect because he is an educated Black man. All the while, he rides President Obama’s back as if President Obama is a rented mule. Dr. West just can’t stand another Black man receiving more kudos that he receives. It really makes Dr. West look bad, it makes him look like a Tom. President Obama has his living made for the rest of his life. Dr. West still has to make his.

You would think that Black men would be proud to have a Black President. I have been appalled by the numbers of Black men who are so jealous of our President. They are thinking it makes them look big to be critical of President Obama. However, it makes them look like small, jealous crabs in a barrel.

The attitudes of some Black men has been so unexpected. As a Black woman, I am very excited and proud that we have as our first Black President a man who is so capable and brilliant.

Jealousy has to be the reason Black men are coming out speaking disrespectfully of our President. They are thinking it makes them look good to find fault with President Obama. However, it makes them look very small.

So, you are saying black men must stay on the plantation? Why is it that a black man can’t be a MAN and say what he believes, even when what he believes happens to be that he doesn’t like the policies of a President, including a black President.

White men talk trash about white Presidents all the time; and nobody suggests that they are simply jealous and that they look small for doing so. And nobody suggests they are somehow betraying their race, as you alluded to with that “Tom” comment.

        Shame on you.

I believe all Black People has been infected by the Stockholm syndrome. We have been held captive so long, we have begun to think and act like our oppressors. Dr. West has been trained and placed in his position by his oppressors. He can only do and say as he is told. He has no tangible solution nor can he affect any solutions that will enhance his so called people. The President at least has the ability to affect change. Dr. West is as his oppressors; he is angry because this Black Man is not listening to him.

No, shame on you! Can we compare where we are as a people to where Black people are. That is REALLY stupid. Our history dictates that we need to try VERY hard to support each other. EVery system this country has in place in designed to keep peole like you (AA people) from loving themselves and each other. The divisiveness that dribbles from Dr. West’s lips is just a symptom of that kind of “TRAINING”. Dispite what comes out of his mouth, Dr. Cornell West is just another “house N “. He sits in his ivory tower at Princeton, Harvard, etc., and speaks down to black people about what we should be doing. Why not join the faculty at Howard, Morehouse, Tuskegee, Spelman, etc., and have your words count. The fact that you won’t, says EVERYTHING about who you are.

Why must Black people or any other people for that matter be supportive of someone of their race in a high position even if he is WRONG. Continuing the drones is a WRONG position that I was appalled that President Obama did not stop forthwith when he first got in office. It distressed me so much I had to have a word with my Pastor. Just because we are Americans does not say we should not care about innocent lives that are lost over and over again with the use of those drones. That is what Dr. West is saying for one thing, and he could say many other points of disappointment as well, while I for one am in agreement with Dr. West. West has a right to his opinion that should not be prevented from voicing just because the President is Black. I wish the President well and will vote for him, but in good conscience there are many, many areas of disagreement I have with him; and by my conscience I am duty-bound to express that opinion if I wish. I do not blame him for everything because the Republican Congress prevented him from doing anything. However, there are some things he could have stood up for on his own. And we all have our right to voice our opinions about it.

  3. Reneegede May 4, 2012 at 4:21 am

Tell West to run for President and do something himself. He keeps talking and there still ain’t no jobs for black people.

President Obama is doing his job, where are the folks who are supposed to be catching his back? The doors are wide open for job creation and creativity in the black communities across America, and I don’t see JayZ, his wife, Bouncy, or even Cornel West making a move in that direction.

I’ll say the same thing to West that I’d say to John Boehner. You the one doing all the talking, where the jobs at?

Dr. West needs to go somewhere and comb his hair. He has been very vocal regarding his opinion of my president Barack Obama. I don’t see him doing anything even in his limited capacity and power doing anything to help and uplift people. I really believe he is being paid by others to spew out this propaganda to confuse and to divide. You don’t have to like what the President is doing. But if you are going to say negative things about him, back that up with some solutions!

What Dr. Cornell West thinks does not represent any organized group of people and as far as I’m concerned, the good professor should stick with the Religious philosophy he has his Doctor’s Degree in. When I need political questions answered I’ll go to Mr. Playthell George Benjamin, and authority on Political matters. The truth will always be there regardless of who does the research. However, most folk don’t know how to project it to the public because they just don’t understand. I include Professor West in this category. Ask Dr. West some questions on Religion and then we’ll be in the field that he has information and knowledge of!

Finally, stop asking set up questions and ask open end questions !so folkd

What is really amusing is that Dr. West is always black this, black that, but his wife is caucasion. Too funny with his afro. I have an African friend that said that the fairer the sking of the African American, the more they spout “Black Power” and what he has come to realize is that they seem to be angry because they are not white… I started to take notice and have not done a scientific study, but there does seem to be some sort of twisted truth about his observation. BTW, my friend is a physician and meets quite a few people in and outside of his practice. So Dr. West is angry not about what someone is not doing for Black People, he just doesn’t want to be one. I am black and believe that Obama will go down in history as one of this country’s best presidents. With or without West and Smiley. And neither they nor I could run for President. lol

PRESIDENT OBAMA DOING A GOOD JOB? MOST PEOPLE IN AMERICA DO NOT HAVE A CLUE WHAT OBAMA’S PASSAGE OF NDAA, HIS MARCH 16, 2012 EXECUTIVE ORDER OR CSPA REALLY EVEN MEANS. SO THOSE IGNORANT b**t WIPES THAT SAY OBAMA IS DOING A GOOD JOB NEED TO GET THOSE HEADS OUT OF THEIR REARS. HE IS NO MLK, JFK OR FDR OR EVEN EISENHOWER. OBAMA COULD LEARN FROM EISENHOWER’S 1961 WARNING ABOUT THE ‘MILITARY INDUSTRIAL COMPLEX” BECAUSE IT SEEMS THEY DID NOT TEACH AMERICAN HISTORY AT HARVARD LAW OR COLUMBIA.

    Reply
    • Drawde5 May 4, 2012 at 8:35 am

What did they these orders do? Seems to me that the upshot is, we’re about to curb military spending, and about time after Eisenhower’s warning seemed to fall largely on deaf ears, the military industrialists have managed to keep us at war for more than 13 of the last 20 years.

NDAA, National Defense Authorization Act: Patriot Act extention. The CSPA prohibits U.S. military assistance and training to countries that actively recruit and use soldiers under the age of 18. What is your point? We don’t need the Patriot act, and Obama wants to employ, or help countries that use child soldiers?

It would be a beautiful thing to hear prescriptions and tactics. How would West have fulfilled the goal of full or even markedly improved employment for blacks during a colossal financial collapse? West ignores, the machinations of business and the right-wing lunatics Obama faces.
My suspicion is, that, West and Smiley think that this would all be different if Clinton had become president. There would have a different climate, the right-wingers love a Clinton, and employment programs would have sailed though Congress. Debt relief for underwater homeowners, etc would have come first. Instead, we got healthcare reform. Clinton would have prioritized differently, probably, but wall street and the economy would have had to be the priority. Any way you cut it, West’s carping and backbiting is annoying at best, counterproductive at worst. He’s becoming easier to ignore all the time.

Some of these post really show how ignorant many of the American people are. So sad, but true. Obama is a murderer. He and Bush are different sides of the same coin. Are black people supposed to stick together even when someone from our community is doing evil. I bet many of you do not feel this way about drug dealers are gang members. I bet I won’t hear any of you say nah the gang bangers and drug dealers are black we need to stick with them. Nope, and rightfully so. Why does Obama get a pass? This man has done nothing for the poor and has helped to erode many of the so-called civil liberties that American people (which I don’t consider myself a part of) are supposed to enjoy. Obama and the American government are criminals and should be condemned by all conscientious people who love justice.

President Obama’s goal is to turn the corner by investing in the infrastructure of the United States, be it the safety net of health care, education and energy, or the network of roads, rail, and bridges by which we transport goods. He can’t force businesses to hire. Evidence is that some, many companies are keeping record profits high by not hiring despite low taxes and incentives across the boards for hiring people back. Businesses blame the workers not being ready for 21st century jobs, Obama responds with initiatives to boost training and education in the workforce — so that our workforce is more than competitive with those countries that have made massive investments in their people, like China, India, Indonesia, Japan, etc.

You can blame a lackadaisical electorate for letting Congress be taken over by the lunatic fringe of the right-wing, and therefore be in position to block everything he tried to do to spur business growth by putting people to work, therefore raising buying power which business needs to hire and BTW, bringing in tax revenue.

The Taliban and their semi-clandestine supporters in Afghanistan and the Pakistani military brought the war to themselves. President Obama is no murderer, he’s at war with terrorists who make a practice of cloaking themselves with civilians, hiding in plain sight in residential areas. Stuff happens.

And yes I’m a young black man, not that matters. Your stupidity lies in unconditional trusting a man you don’t even know. TRUST FACTS my brothers and sisters.

    FACTS
    1. Made every man and women financially liable to PRIVATE Industry(INSURANCE COMPANY’S) by law. Yet their NOT required by law to cover your claims.

    2. Hired 16k new IRS agents in a reccesion to enforce previously stated law.

    3. Deported more immigrants than Bush did in 8 yrs. already.

4.Signed NDAA into law granting the power to declare martial law and detain citizens indefinitely without charging them. And also authorized the use of aerial drones on American soil.

THIS IS FACT NOT FICTION. YOUR PRESIDENT IS NOTHING MORE THAN BULLSHIT DRESSED IN A NICE SUIT. BUT ALL YOU SEE IS A BLACK MAN. TRUE AMERICAN IDIOTS. LMAO

I agree with Dr. West 100%! Black people need to think seriously about building a third political party that’s geared towards our vertical needs. I’m appalled that many of us are blinded by Obama’s ethnic identity and don’t see the wicked, uncivilized war/war profiteering policies that he has continuously signed off on, since he’s been in office. Though he fed the country “change we could believe in” rhetoric, throughout his campaign, he has failed tremendously to followup on his words with “action.” So far he has manifested the behavior of a typical politician, that will say anything to get your vote, but when the dust settles it’s “business as usual.” He’s a very poor role model for our children and that’s the bottom line! The way Trayvon Martin’s case initially was handled and the way his case is still being handled is an unwavering wake up call for all of us, including Jay-Z, P-Diddy, Oprah, Tyler Perry, 50 cents, Magic Johnson, Bob Johnson, Koby Bryant & all the rest of our millionaires & us as a people. Obviously we’ve been led away from the realization that we’re living in the mist of a “holocaust” and we need to start recognizing it for what it is! We’ve lost approx. 10 more Black men after Trayvon was murdered & something must be wrong with our brains, because apparently we’re not feeling it! Everyone in this part of the globe have shown us that they don’t give a hoot about us and we’re so dysfunctional we exemplify that same behavior, towards our own! Again, we’re being victimized by a “holocaust” and we better start dealing with our situation for what it is, before it’s too late!

Yes, that’s what he said, however my position was/is to take what he said a step further & in the proper direction for the sake of our children’s future and for a better socioeconomic well being for us, as a ppl next year. It’s imperative that we fully understand that we’re the only people in this part of the globe that were enslaved, used, abused and many of us lost our lives if we refused to do what we were told. No other group has that legacy. That said, it’s my solemn belief that it would not be in our best interest to join hands with the many different ethnic groups in this part of the globe to form a third party when they don’t understand US history and don’t have any compassion for what our ancestors went through, because if they did they would’ve had second thoughts about coming here or they would show more compassion towards us. So, Dr. West’s idea of a third party, in some sense, already exist & it’s called Green, while on the other hand, my idea of a third party can be deemed as; The Descendents of Enslaved Africans Party or The Black Reparations Party, so you’re right… big difference.

Dr. West has astutely expounded the fact that world politics and
foreign policy are quite violent. Our solutions are, as set by our electoral process, extremely precarious. The GOP committed treason during the Carter administration in order to gain the White House. Foreign policy can be manipulated for political gain. The president of Afghanistan walks a tight rope between United States Foreign Policy and the will of Local Warlords. The most advanced weapons have been tested in Afghanistan from Russian Micotoxins to Drones. There are tremendous mineral resources in Afghanistan. What are we really there for?

Doesn’t mean you know everything and could run the Country better, “because you’re a so called,” “Real Black Man.” I’m so disappointed, you used to be a depiction of dignity, pride, and diplomacy,,,…what happened….??? I’ve lost a lot of respect for you: And stop venting on a public forum.

In my opinion the “Mitt Romney was tossed in as to appear mutual/having the ability to relate to Cornel West.

The Huffington Post: Recently caught up with Dr. Cornel West and asked him his opinion of both President Obama and Mitt Romney.

CORNELL WEST: “Mitt Romney is a catastrophic response to a catastrophe, whereas Obama is a disastrous response to a catastrophe.

    HUFFINGTON POST/YVETTE
    (April 23) —

Smiley and West’s remarks have NOTHING to do with jealousy of any type. They have a right to express their own opinions whether you agree with them or not. Even though I love the President, I happen to disagree with many of his moves. Yet I also do not see anyone who will do better at the moment in fostering my line of thinking. And if he gets it wrong, I have every right to say so. If the President gets a second term, the he still has MUCH to do to turn his accomplishments around. Part of the problem is that he surrounds himself with too many of the wrong advisors. How he could make a high-level appointment with a Wall Street person after the Wall Street fiasco is beyond me — with so many other capable choices in the world. I know that the office of Presidency is so entrenched and complicated that one never knows until he gets into the seat, but we still do not have to accept anything he does without expressing our opinion. It has nothing to do with Blackness. It has everything to do with INTEGRITY. And as Black people in public office, we need to hold on to every bit of integrity that we can muster.

Both of your comments were right on time! I’ve heard the ‘skin folk kin folk’ quote several times in the past and it’s a perfect time to mention such a quote in this conversation because it speaks directly to the “extremely unethical deeds” of the POTUS. Unfortunately, in this part of the globe we’re all a reflection of each other, whether we want to acknowledge it or not, because this capitalistic system, we’re dealing with, was designed solely around skin color and nothing else!

All of us need to start viewing our situation as “a people” stranded on an island and our only true remedy for our survival is ourselves! The foregoing has been our position in this part of the globe, dating back to 1619 and it’s still that way at this very moment. We need to stop looking at things and start “seeing” things for what they truly are. Until the latter happens we’ll continue to be victimized by a government sponsored “holocaust!”

All of our skin folk aren’t our kinfolk…

So what if Cornel West criticizes the president? If he disagrees with the president, West should and has every right to voice that disagreement. It’s really sad to see black people, knowing the struggle that we have gone through for basic civil freedoms, feel that another black American citizen should “sit down and shut up.” It seems that you idiots forget that people fought for the rights to be able to speak one’s voice in this country. At my age, my recollection of commentary about presidents goes back to Nixon, and from Nixon up to Obama, I have heard many criticisms of every single one of them, and it should not stop now.

Hard to believe that Cornell West and his sidekick, Tavis Smiley, were once very respected as forward thinkers and regarded “leaders” with our best interests at heart. Sadly, they have both shown themselves to be self serving opportunists with only their own best interests at heart. At least for Tavis, given reports of his new found wealth, selling his soul has proven lucrative. I hope it was worth it…

While we don’t all have to agree with President Obama (or anyone else for that matter) and all that he says or does, there is a way to express opposition and be heard and taken seriously and then there is a way to turn people off and lose your audience EVEN when/if you are saying
something of value. Sadly, these two otherwise intelligent men have chosen the latter…

Their bitterness seemingly goes back to Feb 10, 2007 when candidate Obama rightfully declined their offer to make his announcement for candidacy in their forum. They were angry and disrespectful then, they are angry and MORE disrespectful now. That is what children in need of attention do. They throw a bigger tantrum in hopes of getting the attention they need. NOT going to happen. President Obama is not going to acknowledge them, and he shouldn’t…

Dr. West & Smiley should get over it and move on and DO some of the good they are demanding of the President instead of happily being pimped by mass media and only discrediting themselves…

obama has done as a good a job of presidenting as any person could under the adverse conditions they had laid on him, hes done a d**n good job, all things considered

-West has never run for office, nor HAS NEVER worked at the highest levels of gov’t in “any” governmental dept

-West doesn’t offer “policy” positions and solutions like he should….balance the attack with a way forward

I’d rather our president use drones to fight these radical fools, than have my fellow american men and women being killed, or maimed by these cowardly terrorist idiots. All you have to do is look around you with open eyes, and ears, too see how much good has been done by the president in spite of all the roadblocks that have been put in front of him by racist republican legislature, policies, and propaganda. Gone is bin laden, all of the automakers are making profits again, and hiring people in record numbers, manufacturing has again begun to pick up, the housing market is gaining momentum, when he took office the dow jones was hovering around 6,700 points, look at it now over 12,900, the SP 500 over 1400, healthcare reform passed so everyone poor/middleclass can have decent health insurance. And for real people all those people who are out of work are in large part due to the artificial economic system that was being propped up by a crooked housing scheme, here’s what it produced. Because the crooks up top thought the golden goose would continue to lay the golden eggs forever it spurred excess in every area of our economy, causing both private, and government to hire all of these so called needed people, so when the bubble burst the scramble was on to try an save their own necks and so out the door with you, if you just so happen to be a worker bee. Keep It Real people and don’t believe everything you read especially from some sources or media outlets.

I agree with Dr. West! Black people need to think seriously about building a third political party that’s geared towards our vertical needs. I’m appalled that many of us are blinded by Obama’s ethnic identity and don’t see the wicked, uncivilized war/war profiteering policies that he has continuously signed off on, since he’s been in office. Though he fed the country “change we could believe in” rhetoric, throughout his campaign, he has failed tremendously to follow-up on his words with action. So far he has manifested the behavior of a typical politician, that will say anything to get your vote, but when the dust settles it’s business as usual. He’s a very poor role model for our children because he hasn’t hesitated to wave a bottle of beer or glass of wine in front of the cameras and that’s not cool, once you weigh our overall circumstances!

That’s precisely the mindset which keeps the American body politic mentally incarcerated by the two-party system. Brother West cannot break the monopoly which they two-party system has on his mind.

Obama plans to keep American troops in Afghanistan until 2024. At what cost?

“I knew that America would never invest the necessary funds or energies in rehabilitation of its poor so long as adventures like Vietnam continued to draw men and skills and money like some demonic destructive suction tube. So I was increasingly compelled to see the war as an enemy of the poor and to attack it as such.”

Interesting how so many comments are about “Blackness” and Blacks supporting Blacks, and jealousy. Supporting our own, does not mean laying down a co-signing bullshit! Stop making this about liking the President and look at his record. I like him…he got mad swagga. But President Obama is “indeed” the lessor of two evils. He’s done a lot of good, but has a long way to go yet. Unemployment in our community is 16%! Ya’ll happy with that? Sentencing discrepancy for drug convictions is 18 to 1 against Blacks vs Whites…hooray for us? None of us know the full details of US foreign policy, but America would not put up with the Mexican government killing innocent Americans, in the pursuit of Mexican drug smuggler in our country? The road to h**l is paved with good intentions! America has historically been a bully around the world when some country has something “IT” wants! Because you disagree with something the President says or does, doesn’t mean you don’t support him. The jury is out for me on foreign policy. But domestically President Obama could have taken a stand on the corruption in our government and inspired the American people to really stay engaged after his election and address the corruption and put the American people and Democracy back in charge, instead he’s just politicking like all politicians do. He ran on change, and we got the same! The same wall street types that crashed the economy under Bush are still there in his Administration? Why?? How do you keep those people? Our Government is totally corrupt, bought and paid for by powerful wealthy special interest. And it’s not a secret! Yet WE the people…are just flapping our gums and blogging about it? Where’s the OUTRAGE! Are you working to change anything? Are you in the streets raising awareness? Are you organizing your family and friends to vote an participate in our threatened Democracy, or just talking? We need to be critical thinkers and think for ourselves. Most of us form our opinions based on bad info from the media…which they (the power elite, mega wealthy) control and use to keep us fighting among ourselves. Wake Up! Get engaged! Organize! The power elite that controls this country are greedy and want world domination…they can only get it, if we give it to them by sitting on the sideline and voting against our own interest. They want your right to free speech (internet regulation) They want your right to to choose (women’s health issues) They want your right to vote (voter suppression laws) They want your right to earn a living and a fair wage (attacking union rights) Freedom is truly at stake! Get off the side and organize, or we are going to see a radically different American in our lifetime. So yes, Obama has my vote, because he is bad, but Romney and the Republican alternatives are 10 times worse. What other choice do we have that will not lead to a splitting of the Democrat vote, and allow Romney to skate to the Presidency?

You are keenly aware of the options facing us as a people in this predicament and do not fear calling the right “shots” or envisioning the “right perspective” for us as we move forward. In fact, even though I will of course vote for Obama — sort of as the lesser of “two evils” not quite but almost), unless he makes at least a 180 degree turn (notice I did not say 360), he will end up being a grave disappointment in the next four years. Yes, let’s vote for him; let’s have “his back.” But let’s ALSO LET HIM KNOW WHAT HE NEEDS TO DO to make his presidency go down in History. That is what Smiley, West and others are trying to do. They are the “voice crying out in the wilderness. Obama needs to take heed to them judiciously as well. We can’t let our Blind Support for ethnicity kill our children’s future and place us in a lower point of history. I believe that this does not really phase President Obama at this point in time., He may just be “biding his time until he can achive his greateest goals at the end dof his term when the biggest legfislative shifts can take place. What we must do as a people is Vote the |Republicans out of office to give our President a fighting chance.

The words of Malcolm X should be considered, as we contemplate the issues raised by Dr. Cornel West, and his brother, Tavis Smiley. Historically, we have seen how racial division, (Booker T. Washington vs. W.E.B. Dubois) retards our progress. Yet, generation after generation, we seem to make the same mistakes, and continually engage in these “public arguments” that further advance the agenda of our enemy. Malcolm himself lived to regret his public arguments against the honorable Elijah Muhammad, and I believe Min. Louis Farrakhan’s greatest regret in life, is his negative and public rants against Malcolm. Yes, I do believe that both Tavis and Dr. West harbor resentment against our President. We all have a right and obligation to critique the President. But, we should do critique with a loving, caring, concerned spirit, and should never forget how significant and astounding that he is in fact, “the first Black President of the USA”! It may be impossible to truly understand what Mr. Obama is dealing with. So, we must be very careful in expecting too much from him. His major contribution I think is to provide us with an image of class, intelligence, family-values, Black manhood, and other positive attributes that can enhance our racial character, and give us a sense of pride and dignity.
President Obama, in his first address, told us that this struggle for human rights, is a struggle we must rage together. Black people have often been guilty of suffering from what I call, “The Moses Syndrome”. We sit on our collective a***s, and wait for a Messiah to come along and solve our issues. No one will solve our issues but us. If we have not learned that valuable lesson by now, we may never learn it.
I do wish that Tavis and Dr. West cease with the public put downs of Obama. They should seek private chat time with him, and express their views in that forum. However, they should realize, that until the man is re-elected, he has to be as non-confrontational as possible. I believe President Obama deserves an opportunity at a second term, given the huge mess he inherited.

Obama has surrounded himself with gays and other weaklings and it’s a direct reflection of the lack of manhood he’s manifested since he’s been in the W/H. Another term for him will only be more of what we’re witnessing right now, that is a congress made up of conservative confederate minded losers that will block everything Obama and his many gay staffers bring to the forefront. The Obama administration is weak to the core and the longer he’s in office the weaker his administration will become. If he’s re-elected, so be it, but he ‘ll never attain another vote from me.

I believe it’s very important for all of us to know that he appointed more gay “status quo” Americans to his team than Blacks and this is why he has stuck his neck out consistently for “gays” to be openly accepted in the military, same s*x marriage, etc. All of the above was a result of internal pressure and not external pressure like most believe.

Our only way out is through self-determination, internal guidance and perseverance, but due to our level of dysfunctional behavior we’ll probably never get there, as you noted…

A Blackman becoming President was a beautiful thing, because of the positive image it gave our black children. The down side is we tend to follow him blindly without questioning or reviewing any of his policies. Barak Obama was no accident. He was put in position to become President, for that very reason. Many of his dehumanizing policies would not have passed so easily into law had he been a whiteman, because we would have protested against them. We take the position, “if President Obama is for it, it must be alright”. If past Presidents tried to pass many of these policies into law, we would have shakin up the country. Now we accept anything because we must support our Black President, or be labeled “Uncle Tom’s”. We must realize, that before President Obama is a Blackman, he is first a MAN. We can’t imagine the pressure he is receiving from the top to pass these policies. To the “Cora Elizabeths” of the world, if you want to support your President, you must apply equal pressure from the bottom, otherwise who do you think he is going to cave in to?….Kodoes to Hermes T.

I agree with you and Goodgiant also. Black Americans need to research Africom and its policies. It is to recolonize Africa and take its natural resources for the benefit of the US and Europe. Obama was the one who opened the gates to the destruction of Libya, and Libya was a country that used its natural resources for the benefit of its own people. The African Union was very supportive of Libya. Now look at it, and the Arabs in the country are killing and lynching the Black African indigenous people there. We need to check out Northcom. Black Americans are so blinded by Obama but they don’t seem to think of what he is doing to Blacks on the continent or here. As far as jobs, he is more concerned about giving jobs to illegal aliens than to American citizens of any color, but, naturally, Black people are the hardest hit with unemployment. He wants to bring in a source of cheap labor. They are also working on creating a source of cheap labor from people who are in prisons. He totally ignores the Congressional Black Caucus. Would you support a murderer because he was Black? Obama is half Black physically but non-Black mentally. Concerning Goodgiant’s comment about Trayvon Martin, is everybody noticing how silent the media is now about Zimmerman? He is ‘free’. The last I heard, his lawyer wants to prevent his file from going public because he feels Zimmerman will be in MORE danger. What is he trying to hide? The message has already been put out that it is open season on Black life, and you can get away with murdering a Black person, just like in Jim Crow days…UNDER OBAMA’S WATCH!!! Everyone is saying how proud they are to have a so-called Black president, but look at the leap backwards we have taken as a people while he is in the white house. Here comes the New Jim Crow and the re-colonization of the African continent. I just hope our Black soldiers (and any others with any conscious) refuse to participate in what is to come.

The racism that runs rampart in America’s foreign and domestic policies has caused an idealistic President to realize that his white momma and his upbringing by white grandparents could not bridge the wide gulf that exist between white America and any other races of people, especially blacks here in America. The novelty of a well-spoken black politician that won the Presidency has worn off. Even his democratic white forces lose b***s and guts when it comes time to defend this President and the negroes in the ilk of “massa’s speakers” are put on display for the Republikkkans to talk as if they now have some kind of equality.

Blah Blah Blah everyone with all of this Blah Blah! I support the President because I agree with most of his policies. I’m not looking for Obama to come make me a better American Negro or only push ONLY the African America Agenda. h**l shall Obama get an education for us, fill out our resumes and INTERVIEW TO!! He’s a man a mere human being. I just want him to do his job as the President (as he would if given the opportunity). Dr West has his right to an opinion as does everyone! I don’t care if Dr West calls him disastrous I call him MY PRESIDENT 2012!!

Nobody is asking Obama to ONLY address issues that pertain to African Americans, but to ALSO address issues that pertain exclusively to AA. Why is it that we perform so poorly in schools? Do you think it possibly because the schools in our districts are of such poor quality? Do you think President Obama should address this issue? President Bush did!

I support President Barack Obama, but I agree with Dr. West on many of the foreign policy activities that are being carried out in the Middle East. Just imagine drones firing Missiles in American neighborhoods.

David Axelrod and all of the other crowd of Jews surrounding Barack Obama are really bossing him and running the White House. Which has me totally disgusted. Obama is not in charge. And Cornell West is absolutely correct about the drones, which, if we don’t watch, are going to be coming in this direction at some point. For America is certain to reap all of thiis death and destruction that is being sewn. And to the person who still thinks that Obama is the first black president, such is not true. For, first of all, he is really a Mulatto, and we have had two or three of them as president, including Warren G. Harding, for one. — Rev. George Brooks

The hate that Cornel West has for Barack Obama go all the way back to the days that West was forced to leave Harvard. West got into a knock down drag out fight with Larry Summers who was president of Harvard at the time, and after a lot of public bluff and bombast West had to take his sorry self out of Cambridge to a more academically tolerant place of loud mouth black faculty, namely Princeton. West was originally a solid Obama for president supporter. However after Obama was elected and chose Larry Summers as his “Economic Recovery Chief” for the White House staff, West’s head exploded and he joined forces with Smiley in a “bash Obama” campaign which continues today. I would hardly consider Dr. West an unbiased commentator on the presidency of Barack Obama as he has already demonstrated.

Dr. would be better served to get his grill fixed and stop flapping his gibbs about what President Obama should be doing. Not to mention giving the opposition the idea that some of our intellectuals are finding fault with Pres. Obama.

I have lost all respect for this man. He is so full of himself, and tries to sound knowledgeable and profound. West has a lack of professional class. Having a doctorial degree does not make him smarter than those without.

I too have a Phd, but compared to West he bring shame to the title. Higher educational level do not make a person better than those without the title “Dr”. West you are no longer a man that can be respected ever!

All over the world black people are looked down upon, esp. AA
I believe it is because some/most of us are exceedingly stupid. I agree with Cornel West 100%. Everytime somebody complains about the job that President Obama is doing, people attack the person for complaining and don’t address the issue at all. What has Obama done for black people since he’s been in office?
Obama said he wanted to be like President Lincoln who said that he didn’t care if a single slave was to be freed, his priority was to maintain the Union. Does this not sound or seem to be just like President Obama.

I agree… You’re definitely speaking truth! This world has been turned upside down, due to satan’s influence! They’ve used their media as a weapon to shape others to view us as being “nothing” when in reality we’re “everything!” Nothing grows without the energy of the sun but satan has corrupted most of humanity’s view to support falsehood over TRUTH.

We need to stop looking at things and start “seeing” things for what they truly are. Until the latter happens we’ll continue to be victimized by a government sponsored “holocaust!” The foregoing well thought out conspiracy was in place long before Obama was selected to be the next POTUS and the statistics of our people dying, like no other group of people, under the umbrella of “murder” and the disproportionate number of our people in the US’s prison industrial complex speaks volumes to the fact that our overall situation, even with a mulatto POTUS, has not changed and in most instances has gotten worse! Again, we need to start “seeing” because it’s clear to me, as your brother (!), and it should be clear to all of us, that we’re living in the mist of a “government sponsored holocaust!”

    WE ARE TRAYVON MARTIN!!

Obama like all other presidents are not immune from criticism.West and other critics of Obama must only be judged on whether they telling lies or speaking the truth.Obama is a mulatto who serves the interests of his mother’s European race as well as the Zionist Jews in and out of the US.He is the head of the racist American imperialist machine that is trying to re-colonise Afrika via Africom and has continued G.W.Bush’s sanctions etc to overthrow President Mugabe of Zimbabwe because of the president reclaiming our land.He is against reparations for Afrikans but is for reparations for the racist Zionist Jews.Afrikans are still the most most oppressed race in the US despite Obama being president,so his presidency has not alleviated their oppression.West’s wife being Caucasian as is being said does not negate his right to critique Obama.Critics of Obama do not owe Obama anything and are not obligated to support him.

I tried to read each comment before saying this, but I just couldn’t get through it. Both President Obama and Dr. West are doing what they can do. It is us who “watch” them and “comment” on them. Stop judging so harshly. They are in complex situations that VERY few of us can relate to. For example, they have a very heavy responsibility that when they speak, MANY will listen and actions will happen. Fortunately, most of what I read here will die here. Both are Black, very different men, with different experiences. Support both as best you can and try to understand without petty judgements. Read more than just these opinionated blogs and public news media and be more thoughtful and not just emotional.

Correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t Io see a picture of Dr. West on stage with President Obama soon after his inaguration. Truth is he was there. With his fake smile and rhyming conversation in his attempts to cajole and convince that his way of thinking is what thinking really is. He’s a pathetic man with a mentality that has been white washed into thinking that he will be accepted no matter what. And, in his attempts to secure his his place there, he agrees to objectify everything he can about the President. Wonder why, possibly because President Obama didn’t fall for his buck tooth fake smile and could see the knife he was carrying in his cheap suit pocket to use to cut his throat in such a staged manner it could go unnoticable to the uninformed. Now that he’s off the stage, he’s gone back to his original purpose in the dialogue. He will continue to sit by the door. Nothing more, nothing less.

This is sad. These attacks on Dr. West and President Obama reflect just how blind people are to what’s really going on in this world – the REAL issues and REAL problems. Both of these men are highly educated and you can’t take that from them. Comments about the man’s complexion and hair only reflect on your level of education and yes, it’s that old slave mentality. Dr. West is NOT a politician, it’s not his responsibility to fix our problems. However, President Obama IS a politician, he’s the man I voted for and have expectations of. Politics is not a BLACK thing or BLACK cause. I don’t expect or even want him to support issues based on race. I expected him to support what’s righteous and good for the majority of Americans and citizens of the world and to change that policy which is not. He has not done this and its apparent to a lot of people, including Dr. West, that he is not going to do this. While I’m disappointed I can’t say I blame him. He’d be dead (like all those before him who tried to change social and financial conditions for the good of our society.) Dr. West’s comments and opinions are based on his knowledge, he knows what it is! I’m giving you a tool to educate yourselves, it’s my wake up call for all in hearing distance. Watch this movie – then hollar! http://vimeo.com/13726978. Peace&Love

Innocent lives were also lost in the strikes in Libya. And personally I would really much rather learn the rationale for Osama bin Ladin’s complaints against the U.S. rather than to have snuffed out that valid information by murdering him. The President also nearly bent over backwards to try to get Republicans to work with him when he could have actually had the Affordable Health Care Act with Single Payer passed before the mid-term elections, in my opinion. That is part of what Dr. West could be saying for one thing, and he could say many other points of disappointment as well, while I for one am in agreement with Dr.

Our greatest priority if to change the power of Congress to give the President’s programs a fighting chance. However, there are some things he could have stood up for on his own. And we all have our right to voice our opinions about it.
