US Soldier Goes on Killing Spree Against Afghan Citizens

A US serviceman went on a shooting spree in Afghanistan, leading to increased political tensions between the two countries.  Afghan President Hamid Karzai has demanded an explanation from the United States about what happened, but US officials have not yet released details surrounding the situation. .

The alleged shooter made the attack in Kandahar, the same province where the Quran has been burned on a US base.  There were riots for days after the burning. General John Allen, a US commander, has released a statement about the shooting.  He said that there will be a “rapid and thorough investigation,” and that the soldier will be in US custody.   He also offered his condolences to the Afghan people for the incident, and said that “anyone who is found to have committed wrongdoing is held fully accountable.”

Very depressing situation to say the least…..my heart goes out to the Afghan people who have lived in fear from radical islamist such as the Taliban. This one senseless act has the potential to set back 10 years of US efforts to help the Afghans achieve self determination and security. The U.S. must be transparent in its efforts to understand what happened and how we will deal with the accused.
